The Strings and Voices Series at Mendonesia Cafe presents...

Mary Shapiro & Patricia Morrison & The Food of Love West Coast Tour

Wednesday, July 1, 12 noon, all ages, free

Mary Shapiro and Patricia Morrison are two singer songwriters on THE FOOD OF LOVE TOUR: performing mostly at farmers markets, cafes, house concerts and benefits--from San Diego, CA up to Victoria, BC; From June 19- July 26. They are selling their CDs to support two different non-profits: Little Friends for Peace (www.LffP.org based in DC) and the Tucson Community Food Bank (
http://tinyurl.com/mq8xr3) as well as 100% organic cotton fair trade bags

29-year-old singer/songwriter, Patricia Morrison's long resume and well-traveled passport are reflected in her songs, alive with the places and people she has met along the way, with a voice like Joan Baez and songwriting compared to Natalie Merchant, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. A classically trained singer/songwriter and music teacher who hails from Tucson, Arizona, Patricia calls on folk, world, blues, gospel and classical
influences to write her songs, which are marked by a care for humanity as seen through the stories of individuals. These stories take on a new life in her rich, soaring vocal lines and the gentle, undulating backdrop of her
guitar. www.patriciamorrison.net

"Mary Shapiro inspires, touches, and beckons us to join in the song!" -Carrie Newcomer, Grammy Award Winner & Rounder Recording Artist Described as "healing / political / pop", Mary infuses her music with gospel, folk, rock & soul. She's headlined in Japan, shared songs with orphans in Berlin, and played in Palestine, Israel, New York, Georgia and at home in Washington, DC. Mary sings with a gospel choir and recorded with a community choir lead by Dr. Issaye Barnwell and Sweet Honey in the Rock. In 2007 Mary was the first recipient of DC Acoustic Underground's "Excellence in Local Music Award." In 2002 Mary co-founded Sounds of Hope benefit concerts, which she produces and hosts weekly. She supports and collaborates with other performers and loves hosting a monthly open mic. Mary's first CD "CELEBRATE!" is a fun melding of kids (ages 4-10) and professional musicians that will have you singing along. Recorded live in concert in 2006 it continues to benefit Little Friends for Peace (a non-profit where she's taught for 10 years). Mary's solo album, "The Time is Now", will be released in Fall 2009 with an EP available this summer.
