Hope this comes out right...Never 'shared' on Care2 before.
It is because of Care2 I've been seeking out vegan sites online. Of course one cannot get far without all the graphic photos, videos and first hand accounts of the atrocities going on daily at factory farms. The things I did not know are: #1 many animals are cut up while still alive. They see, hear, smell and feel everything that is going on. #2 pigs are often kept totally confined 24/7 with no way to turn, walk or lay down normally.
Why do people, why was I, paying money to support this?
As a lacto-ovo of over 16 years I grew comfortable with the fact that I was not eating animals. However, I was still giving money to the companies, to the people, who condone the barbaric practices that go on. Furthermore, I bought chicks thinking having my own pet hens was a responsible thing to do. Not necessarily so. The newly hatched males at the hatcheries either get tossed in dumpsters, suffocated in bags or are ground up alive. (My hens are cage-free pets, have names, are clean and seem happy. They won't be cast aside as they age and will be allowed to live out their natural lives.) Because I have hens and do consume their eggs I cannot be a vegan.
This is where "leaning vegan" comes in. I'm phasing out foods/food products containing eggs and milk. Not super easy but not as horrible as I expected. Most everything has a substitute.
If I think I cannot do it or get overwhelmed or criticized I see the animals... I see them struggling to move, to eat, to breath. I see them crying out. I see them being electrocuted, beaten, tossed on the concrete floor, being cut up, being scalded alive. This is all I need to motivate me.
This is the beginning of something meaningful in my life. Thank you Care2 and all the great people I meet along the way.
