Action Request:Protest

Dear Galen G. Weston

It has come to my attention that your Grocery Stores, Loblaws, Zehrs, Superstore, and No Frills are selling US beef. As you are aware US beef is often fed Poultry feces (manure) as a means for producers to lower their production costs and as a convenient method of disposing of this toxic waste product. Personally, as a farmer, and as a human who strongly believes in the ethical treatment of farm animals, I am at a total loss for words to describe how repugnant this practise is to me, and to the farm animals. Few indignities committed against farm animals, as bad as they are, by Factory Farmers today compare to this! Even suppose for one minute that you and your customers do not care one iota about how the animals are treated, still the health of your family and that of your customers must be important to you.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), who I am sure that you are aware of, and that you surely respect, has warned in their Feed Policy Doc. of pathogenic microbial contamination and chemical contaminants such as heavy metals ( eg; Arsenic from the roxarsone in feed) and pesticides

An Except from CFIA's official website --

RG-2 Regulatory Guidance: Feeding of Poultry Manure to Cattle Prohibited (Used to be called a Policy Doc. until last fall)

"What are the safety concerns associated with using poultry manure and litter as a feed ingredient?

Concerns are of a dual nature. That is to say, there is concern for both the health of the animal ingesting the feed and for food safety as humans eating the edible end products of these animals may be exposed to contaminants. Safety concerns are varied depending on the source of poultry litter and manure. There is also potential for pathogenic microbial contamination, i.e., bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli and Clostridium botulinum. The transfer of residues of drugs approved for use in poultry may result in residues in manure and litter. Other concerns include chemical contaminants such as heavy metals and pesticides which may accumulate in poultry waste products."

It is also of interest to note that one of the primary sources of Listeria is in the feces of animals (poultry) -- an except from a Pub Med article at:

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates that 20 to 25% of the broiler litter is fed, but there are concerns regarding the safety of feeding large quantities of poultry litter to cattle, which are susceptible to infection by pathogenic microorganisms such as Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella and Campylobacter spp. that may be present (36). Botulism outbreaks have also been described in cattle herds fed contaminated litter (44).”

I found this quote, I believe it is quite appropriate here!

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.” by Upton Sinclair

Hence I will try to be clear!

-- Your company Loblaws admits to selling US Beef to Canadian consumers

-- US beef is commonly fed poultry manure (an FDA sanctioned feed) as a means to produce inexpensive beef.

-- CFIA has banned this practise (feeding of feces) in Canada and warns of the dangers (to the animal and to the consumer of the food products from those animals) of feeding feces to animals in their feed policy doc. (link above).

-- Knowing that you are aware of the risks of this feces fed beef and that CFIA condemns it, and that you continue to sell US feces fed beef to Canadian consumers are YOU willing to accept Moral and Legal responsibility for going against the "best" advice of the CFIA when your customers are sickened or die as a result of consuming these "food products" that you sold them?

Footnote -- Maybe you would be so kind as to sign my petition at Care2 to Ban the Feeding of Feces to Farm animals in the US
Thanx so much for your immediate attention to these very serious matters.

ps -- I have searched in vain for an email address that I could send this letter to you at, BUT alas I have been tottaly unsuccessful so I will post it here and hope that you, or someone who knows how to get this to you, finds it.

Why are your stores cutting hours of your employees? Its Christmas. Is it to give higher bonuses to your executives and managers? People are struggling to survive as it is. Your part time workers have had their hours dropped in half. You say you value your employees yet they are treated with disrespect. I went by one department in one of your stores in Surrey BC and I overheard the manager berating an employee and saying " If you don't like the hours dropped - get another job " bringing the employee to tears. Is this how you have your managers run "Your" stores and departments? Life is tough out there for the average worker and hour cuts and treatment like that from your managers is totally uncalled for. Your employees are your greatest assets!!
