A Happy 4th of July to all my Friends “Across the Pond”

 I love my doggie

                           If this was your Puppy
"Would you leave this, obviously well cared for, Puppy from our Care2 community cooped up in a room for a full 12 hours without any Food  or even a Drink of Water, but expect the poor animal not to pee on the floor?"

No!    Exactly,

because that would be Cruel and Inhumane.

So why is it OK when Medical Professionals are expected to perform stressful work assignments in Surgery under the same inhumane circumstances, without Food or Water for 12 straight hours?
Breaks are at the Discretion of the Employer!"

The unconscious Patient undergoing Surgery is vulnerable and defenseless.  However, as Medical Professionals we are duty bound to advocate for their safe treatment while they are in our care in the OR.

Please Help us Adhere to this Important Duty.

Does no one ever anticipate that a member of the OR Team might make a mistake during extended periods stranded in Surgery without relief?
“Breaking Scrub,” to leave the OR before an assigned Scrub relief takes over, risks being charged with:
        Patient Abandonment!”
Wetting the Floor is Unthinkable!

The OR at the Detainee Hospital, Camp Delta, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba – DoD photo Staff Sgt. Steven Lewald US Arm (Releases)
All members of the OR Surgical Team Must Remain Alert to Perform their Critical Tasks with the Utmost Regard for Patient Safely.
If your family member was unconscious on the OR Table would you want members of the sterile Surgical team trying to concentrate on the meticulous demands of an operation while feeling sick, dizzy and faint after 10-12hours of extreme deprivation and fatigue
due to the thoughtless abandonment of deliberate negligent under-staffing?

Do you need to Eat, Drink or Urinate more frequently than once every 12 Hours?
This deprivation is not permissible for the treatment of working P.O.W.s under the Geneva Convention!
So, why is it acceptable for Hospital Staff in America?

HUMANS DESERVE HUMANE TREATMENT TOO!

On America’s Birthday:   Make a commitment to demand Humane treatment for Medical Staff that Protects the Safety of vulnerable Surgical Patients in the OR and defends those who courageously advocate on behalf of Patient Safety;

If you find this important, please note it on http://www.care2.com/news/member/498527144/136427
and let's hope it gets to the front page so that many more can read about it - I think it is so vital - and the more people get injured because the violence that is spreading in the world, the more important it is that the medical caring for them is functioning well, isn't it?
Peace, love and understanding!

I thank you for your support. When I went out to Aceh, Indonesia to help out after the tsunami, I was working in a “Conflict Zone” that was also a massive disaster area. It is very taxing to work under such circumstances, taking reasonable precautions not to put yourself at risk. We operated on TNI soldiers following a GAM rebel ambush; I stood vigil over one all night in the OR with a bag-valve mask helping hi to breath. However, mostly I was surrounded by the human tragedy of those who had not only lost their homes, but their family as well; even my Nurses were grieving for their own dead.
There is enough suffering in the world caused by these natural disasters without us creating devastation, death and injury needlessly adding to the escalating numbers of homeless, starving refugees. In Aceh I also learned that the seeds of armed resistance that we so blithely write off as “terrorism” are born in the unjust suppression of a proud people and the continual plundering of their land and resources by a powerful dominating force. Aceh was a mineral rich area populated by a desperately poor oppressed people. After so many UN and NGO Volunteers bore witness to the truth the Indonesian Government was moved to negotiate with the rebels and grant independence one year after the tsunami had struck.
When they say that “the truth will set you free” it is so right. We must continue to bear witness to the truth as only by doing so can we finally correct not only the injustices perpetrated against a subjugated nation, but the corruption and wanton profiteering that exists in our own supposedly “civilized” society. I will continue to speak out, expose negligent practices that endanger ordinary citizens and testify to the truth in my writing: “The Pen is Mightier than the Sword!”
