Alice Baker (Earthangels Ragdolls) Sells FIP-Infected Cats

Boycott

California, United States
Alice Baker of Earthangels Ragdolls cattery bailed out from the pound, then turned around and sold, a litter of ragdoll kittens, at least one of which has since died from the dry form of FIP. This kitten was already showing what is now known to be the initial symptoms of runny eyes with fever, but was spayed, then sold, without a contract or any medical records regarding examination, testing, vaccinations, or even a certificate of sterilization. The transfer of ownership was done in a parking lot, ostensibly to "meet halfway."
California has a pet protection law which requires sellers be responsible for records being kept, turned over to the new owner, and the seller provide contact information.
It has since been uncovered that Ms. Baker's contact information consists of: an email address on her web site that is no good; a post office box taken out in the name of a 71-year-old man; and a phone number listed in her ex-husband's name. With much effort, her physical address in Yorba Linda has been found, but she has avoided six attempts by the Orange County sheriff's office to serve her with a small-claims court summons. The sheriff has concluded that she is "evading."
Alice Baker gives reputable breeders a bad name. What, one wonders, is she hiding from?
If you want a particular breed, check out petfinder.com. There are many rescue organizations that specialize in finding homes for breeds in need. If you must go to a breeder, ask to visit their cattery -- any reputable breeder should welcome you. They certainly won't hide behind a maze of bad information or meet you in a parking lot.
I came across your message here about Alice after doing a Google search. We purchased a ragdoll from Alice in 2002 and it was a good experience. We went to her house, saw the cats, and spent time there. We did this a few times before picking Trixie up. Alice was great - no problems. Everything checked out fine. I am dumbfounded w/ your alert on her. She was living in a house when we were in touch with her. Got all Trixie's papers etc. Can you expand a little more on this for me? Thanks so much. We live in Redondo Beach and you can view Trixie's picture on my care2connet page....

I purchased a Ragdoll from Alice 2 years ago. My kitten had worms, fleas, and an upper respiratory infection. Buyer beware. This woman is crazy!!!

I received a private message from a man who purchased a kitten that may have been littermate of my friend's cat. The kitten became very ill but, thankfully, pulled through, though the vet bills came to about $1,000. He has been trying without success to locate Alice Baker.

I believe Alice Baker of Earthangel Ragdolls can be emailed at "kittymom@inbox.com". I've just had an experience with an awful ragdoll breeder myself named "Ellen Milas" (Hallmark Ragdolls) and posted about her because I think she is a fraud and is abusive/negligent with her animals. Thanks for posting this.

I also bought a cat from Alice in 2003 and it was a wonderful experience. I live 250 miles from her and talked on the phone and then went to her house. I can confirm that she lived in the house and all of her cats were happy and healthy as is mine. Her house was clean and odor free, which I thought was amazing for a breeder. My cat is healthy and happy. I can tell you that Alice was very particular about the care after I took her home and I have been in touch with her several times since. She has always been very nice and helpful. I personally know that some of your information in incorrect. I do not know where you got the information from, but I would be very careful about what you post.

A lot has apparently changed in Ms. Baker's life between your purchase in 2003 and my investigation as posted in 2006.
My information is all first-hand.
Be careful who you advise what to post, Mrs. Chap. This is still a free country and we still have a First Amendment.

Allow me to give a more recent account from within the last 6 months.
I am sorry you did not have a pleasant experience with Alice, but we got a blue mitted ragdoll male kitten from her in October of 2007 and could not be happier.
She met us "halfway" in a parking lot, as well -- which was perfectly fine with me. Other breeders I had talked to were willing to "ship" the kitten to me via courier (for an additional $200, of course) and I much preferred the kitten be transported via a less frightening mode, and by someone he trusted. She not only drove the 120 mile round-trip at no extra charge, but also brought one of his siblings from a previous litter to show what we could expect him to mature to.
Our kitten was perfect - healthy, neutered, vaccinated, ZERO worms/fleas, clear eyes, clean ears and smelled/looked wonderful.
At his first vet visit the staff and Dr. all commented on his pristine health and sunny, playful temperament. Same for his first grooming visit a few weeks ago - compliments galore on how healthy and well-bred he is.
We love our little guy and would definitely deal with Alice again. I am not debating that you may have had a less-than-positive experience than we did, but wanted to share that ours was not at all the same.

I found this site while searching for consumer feedback on Hallmark Ragdolls and owner Ellen Milas, so I will confine my comments to White Light, who mentioned it. I bought my first Ragdoll from Hallmark Ragdolls four years ago. I was so pleased and impressed that over time I bought two more, and I put up and maintain Hallmark Ragdolls' website for Ellen. In those four years there has been ONE customer who was displeased. Why? Because the kitten purred at night and kept her awake, and knitted on her, and was basically ... A HEALTHY, NORMAL KITTEN! Ellen was shocked - the customer had certainly presented a very different picture and passed the screening process. Though the contract the customer signed states that Hallmark Ragdolls will exchange the kitten or TAKE IT BACK WITHOUT EXPECTATION OF REFUND, Ellen still offered this customer the refund if only she would bring the kitten back. Her primary concern was making certain that the kitten was placed in an appropriate home. Instead, the customer canceled payment and justified her THEFT as "saving the kitten from a bad breeder", which is simply hogwash. It's up to Ellen if she wants to prosecute, but given that there has been one complaint in four years and White Light is the only one complaining, readers should be wary of her accusations. There are certainly bad breeders out there, but Hallmark Ragdolls is NOT one, not by any stretch.

I am currently looking for a ragdoll kitten and after reading some comments here about some of the breeders I have looked up I'm a little nervous. I want a kitten for a pet only...not to show and have missed my senior ragdoll that passed a couple of years ago. Does anyone know who I should contact in the LA area. I live in Redondo Beach.

Kristi D, Hallmark Ragdolls is local to Los Angeles and gets a big thumbs up from me and everybody else on the "Testimonials" page of their website (www.hallmarkragdolls.com). I was so impressed that I bought three Ragdolls from them over time, foster kittens for their breeding program, and maintain their website for them. I do it for free - and for spreading the joy of Ragdoll ownership. My condolences on the loss of your other Ragdoll, and good luck to you.

This comment is in regard to the comment from "Hallmark Ragdolls". I know "White Light" and she is terrific. I can't say the same about Hallmark ragdolls. That cat she got from Hallmark Ragdolls had behavioral issues, ear mites, diarrhea, he didn't have any of his shots, hadn't been dewormed (nothing was done according to your "contract"), and what you call "snoring" was actually a respiratory infection so bad that kitten could hardly breathe. You know this and you're just twisting it so you sound like the victim. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Hallmark Ragdolls. It's like the bottom of the barrel dealing with them. The fact that you would try to suggest it was just due to a kitten snoring is beyond dumb. Did you "forget" that kitten was sick or are you just nuts? Do you really think anyone submits a complaint to the CFA and almost calls animal control because a kitten is snoring? You have no idea how she cared for that kitten and how much it sucked dealing with Ellen Milas and that mean guy who seems to be her errand boy. They are creepy people as far as I'm concerned. Creepy and shady. "White light" tried 2 different kittens from you and they all had the same issues. The nastiness and lack of understanding and responsiblity of your comment pretty much says it all as far as the emotional tone of this breeder. That nastiness is how they treat their kittens, and that is probably why their kittens have behavioral issues. This is not a breeder I would recommend either, but I certainly hope they've cleaned up their act. They do not actively show, which tells me that they don't keep up or care with the breed standard - This is what I was told by one of the heads at TICA about breeders who don't show.
Keeping cats in a trailer the size of a bathroom where it smells like crap, and kicking your kittens around can hardly be considered ethical and she has every right to call you on what you did. That's how Ellen Milas of Hallmark Ragdolls treats her kittens. You just don't like being caught and you're lucky animal control wasn't called. It clear to us that you are a breeder who are just after the money. I am pretty sure the comment that follows yours is from yourself. In my opinion, when you deal with a responsible breeder, they don't sell you a sick kitten and then try to blame the buyer for the breeder's mistakes. We have the right to speak up about abusive breeders and you're not stopping us. I think what you do to those animals is deplorable and abusive. We've actually met really good breeders now who don't high pressure you into buying a kitten, who don't say "let's meet here" and then change their mind at the last minute, and who don't have sick kittens and if they do have something, they will actually take responsibility for what they did, unlike you. Sorry you don't like to hear it, but if you don't want to be responsible for breeding sick kittens, don't breed them and don't try to make it sound like you're put off when you're responsible and pawn off responsibility. At the very least, we hope you've stopped kicking your kittens around the trailer. It is really sad to me that you'd try to turn it around when you know the truth of what you did.
In regard to your comment about theft, that is just another lie and twisting of the facts. Don't you make false accusations, as that is slander and also illegal. It seems like that's all Hallmark ragdolls does. It sounds like you're just trying to make someone else out to be the "bad guy" but you sold a sick kitten under a false contract and committed fraud, and you were paid so you're lying. You also give medication that's illegal to give to your cats w/o a prescription. It's all a scam with them. Your own contract "guarantees" that your kittens have been treated for certain things. You signed it knowing that the kitten hadn't received those things. You're just lying and you were paid. So what do you have to complain about and why are you lying? Besides, given the option to return that kitten to you, "White Light" has such a big heart that she couldn't bear the thought of that kitten going back to that stinky trailer and being kicked around anymore. It wasn't about the money for her. It was about doing the best thing for that kitten. Not something the focus seemed to be on for the breeder. I think they're just mad they didn't get more money.
I just happened upon this webpage for some reason, but I can assure you that we've moved on and found great kittens and that we're resolved about the situation because we know the truth, so this is the last time we'll be reading or writing about you, but I did want to help set the record straight after the distortion you presented. You can twist it all you want, but it won't change the reality of what you did and how you treat those kittens.
I certainly hope no one else has this experience with them. I hope what "White Light" did was enough to get them to shift gears and treat their animals better. I hope to never hear about that kind of abuse again but that definitely wasn't my experience.

To Mus T: I respect that you want to defend your friend, White Light. However, you don't know what you're talking about. Ellen Milas generally waits until the last moment to administer the final shots before the kitten goes to its new owner so its immune system gets a boost. Any kitten going into a new environment without this boost does risk its immature immune system reacting. In the case of White Light's kitten, White Light changed the appointment several times, and Ellen didn't have the shot ready when White Light finally showed. This was indicated on the contract which White Light signed. White Light had every opportunity to inspect the kitten and NOT PURCHASE if she saw a problem. Even after she bought the kitten she had the right of exchanging it. If the kitten became ill, the breeder would gladly have given advice on caring for it or even accepted it back to nurse it back to health. White Light had every opportunity to call animal control if she 'really' feared for the safety of the cats. She had every opportunity to return the kitten. She did none of this. There is no lie here - White Light purchased the kitten, cancelled payment, and kept the kitten. That isn't a "big heart" - that is THEFT. If you were told otherwise, then your friend has lied to you. You are forgetting both the seller AND THE PURCHASER have rights and responsibilities.
As for any accusations that Ellen is breeding cats for the money, why on earth would she live in a small home if she could afford some grand mansion? She doesn't earn a dime of profit - anything earned is plowed straight back into the business. She breaks her back for love of the breed.
Ellen's kittens are not "kicked around", they're simply free to roam as they please, as she does not cage them. She does not give her cats "illegal" prescriptions. I've been to her home many times and know how well she cares for ALL of her cats. I bought three kittens from Hallmark Ragdolls myself, all were healthy, and none had behavioral problems. Her website is full of testimonials from people who are very happy with their purchases, and those are only a FEW. In over three years that I've known Ellen, this is the first time a customer ever canceled payment and then conveniently accused her of all these ridiculous things in retrospect. All White Light accomplished was getting a purebred kitten at the expense of the other cats and kittens who depend on the business's income.
It's a free country, you're entitled to your opinions, but you are not entitled spew baseless lies over the Internet as though they WERE fact. They are not. Baseless accusations are grounds for libel and slander. Again, it's up to Ellen if she wants to prosecute. I'm only here to set the record straight.

Grrr, this website. Will try my post again.
Mus T stated that Hallmark Ragdolls "do not actively show, which tells me that they don't keep up or care with the breed standard." Hallmark Ragdolls is a member of TICA and Ellen Milas's breeding cats conform to TICA's standards. She has bred Ragdolls over 20 years and bought her foundation stock from Ann Baker (the original developer of the breed). The only reason she doesn't show her cats is that she hasn't got the time.

I purchased a kitten from Alice Baker in October of 2007. What a caring and wonderful person she is. She meet us half way to deliver my beautiful kitten. The kitten was clean, no fleas, ears clean,no worms, and the kitten had a calm disposition. Alice took a lot of time with me, to go through the guarantee, and food, feeding...etc.She even gave a us a toy, and a piece of the baby blanket the kittens slept on. Alice was very supportive prior to the purchase and after. I still call Alice and ask her opinion regarding "Max". I really don't understand the above problems others have had with Alice. I would not think twice to purchase another kitten from her, or to recommend her to someone who is interested in purchasing a Ragdoll. My cat is absolutlely beautiful, and has a wonderful and loving desposition. I could not have make a more perfect match. I have never had a problem getting a hold of Alice, or if I have emailed her, I have alway received an answer. To end this ...I can only say...Alice made this a very clean and positive tranaction, and I do not regret any part of the tranaction.

Well I Purchased a kitty in Feb 2008 paid $600, got the paperwork and gave the kitty back to her since I was going overseas for 2 months. I came back end of March, and now it is mid of October, AND I AM STILL WAITING for my kitten or $600. I call her almost everyday and I was able to talk to her only 3 times and she said she is not feeling well. I do believe her, but I am just a little frustrated. I spent a lot of money on kitty stuff and I was so excited. I just hope she gets well soon.

I purchased a kitten from Alice Baker, the kitten came down with upper resp. infection the 2nd day, then an eye infection. Despite numerous calls that went unanswered, never rec'd. his papers. Would never recommend her as a reputable breeder!

No doubt there will be a few good cases with this woman, with a few happy new ragdoll owners. That however, does not take away from the fact that she has sold some horribly ill cats, thus getting the reputation she deserves. Why do you think you cannot contact her now? Why do you think her website is gone? Because of some negative posts on this website? Of course not. Otherwise her reputation would overrule that. It’s because people have gone after her for the horrible things she has done, and she has either quit, or does business discreetly now. She seemed like a very sweet, nice lady, and I’m sure she typically is right up to the moment you pay her. If anything goes wrong however, you will soon see that she has no sense of accountability, and ignores all emails and phone calls. I myself received a kitten from her, who not long after was diagnosed with FIP. The kitten was absolutely wonderful and sweet, but that didn't mean she wasn't sick. The cat only lives for about a year with FIP, and I had to say goodbye to my sweet little one while she was hooked to IV's and reeking of medicine.
I was unable to contact Alice via phone or email. I literally scared the daylights out of her by coming to her house because I remembered where she lived. Luckily I was in a cordial mood and didn't make a fuss. I just said I wanted to talk. We made an agreement and she gave me another kitten for free to replace the sick one.
Happy ending? No. This kitten developed respiratory problems. We did everything we could, but when I came back from school one day, my dad told me she had died.
Again, I tried to contact Alice to no avail. Because I was so busy with school, I couldn't up and drive all the way to her house again. The second experience was the worse than the first. Unless she cleans up, I can't forgive her for the two years of pain she caused our family. The kittens were sweet as buttons, lovable and affectionate, but they were sick, and it broke our hearts. Just recently I decided to check on her website. What a surprise that it isn't up. What a surprise that she's using the same excuses. For those of you that had good experiences with her, let me just say this. For every litter she has, one or two kittens will be sick. Depending on how many kittens the mom has, that's a 10-30% chance you're going to get a sick kitten. Does that sound trustworthy to you? Does that sound reputable to you?

Alice Baker is AWFUL! I have to say.....OMG....I had the WORST experience with her. I was a small breeder twice. I mean I had one litter and she helped me in the beginning to set up my breeding program. I had 2 litters using one of her males and my 2 females. Beautiful kittens, very healthy...amazing little animals. When the kittens were 8 weeks old, she said she had home for most of them.....truly beautiful kittens and she same and picked up 6 kittens that she had buyers for and she was to send me the $ once they picked up the kittens, I kept 2 for other people and they are know healthy and happy adult kittens. Once she left with the kittens it was the last I talked to her personally...I sent hundreds of emails as she owed me hundreds of dollars. Finally she sent me an email saying ALL the kittens died and she had no $ for me, they were all sick and that was that. WHAT????? My adult females and the 2 kittens I kept and sold were fine and still remain that way. This situation was about 5 years ago...I know a long time, but it still pisses me off. I am SURE she is lying and kept the $$ OR her house is contaminated and they did die....but WTF......what is wrong with her? My kittens were all checked by a vet, vaccinated by a vet and if perfect health when they left. What also scares me, if she was lying and they were all healthy and she sold them...she NEVER got the papers from me, meaning she probably created FAKE papers....I don't know...I don't breed cats, but I can tell you that the 2 kittens I kept and sold on my own are still healthy and happy and have NEVER been sick as well as my 2 spayed females....go figure...I just stumbled upon this today years later and I am thrilled that others have similar complaints because it just truly validates me that she is an opportunist, a liar, and NOT a reputable breeder........

When I pressed "submit", nothing happened, or I would have posted this on the website I found you on. I wonder now if I got YOUR cats!! I bought 2 ragdolls from Alice in 2005. That was in August of 2005 and they were 12 weeks old. They're both very healthy and always have been. Not only that, her house was clean back then when I saw it. She lived in Buena Park and had a husband. I read in some older posts from 2006 about an 'ex-husband'. Anyway, I have a seal mitted male and a blue lynx mitted female. They're both incredibly sweet animals, but they're not as pretty as other ragdolls I see with the very blue eyes. She asked me if it would be ok if she contacted me later to "show" the female I got because she thought it had a show quality cat body - I know I'm not wording that right. Anyway, she never had any more contact with me even though I had no idea she wasn't anything other than honest and I'd email her pictures of them growing up! She'd never respond and never contacted me about 'showing' the female. She gave me papers on both of them and on the papers, they're only a few weeks apart in age. She gave me a "deal" of $300 for the male because she said he was bigger than her other kittens, even though he was the same age, so people didn't want one that looked older. I've always wondered if he wasn't much older than she claimed though. He's a loving precious animal regardless and I wouldn't trade him for anything, but your posting just made me wonder! I'm disappointed to see much has changed with her and her breeding business. I was trying to find her information so I could recommend her to a girl I work with who wanted a Ragdoll and this is how I find out 5 years too late that I picked a bad breeder!
Friday August 20, 2010, 1:47 am
I agree Hallmark Ragdolls is a disgrace. That woman had her kittens living in filth. She is a nasty awful woman who should never be the care taker of such loving creatures as ragdoll's. It makes me sad that there are such sick people out there. A lot of her kittens had URI (upper respiratory infections) and ear mites. To me this is Kittens 101. Kittens should have their first vaccinations around 8 weeks. It can be sooner though. They have to have their shots exactly 21 days apart for as a 3 part series. This is so important because kittens that are vaccinated late and exposed to other animals with common upper respiratory viruses will become lifelong carriers of that virus, and will often have flare ups throughout their life. When a kitten has URI I can promise its because the breeder did not take the necessary precautions in preventing an exposure to a virus. Ellen Milas is a clear example of this. PLEASE STEER CLEAR OF HER.
Monday September 6, 2010, 12:22 pm
Whatever you do, do not and I mean DO NOT buy from Ellen Milas. I bought my first kitten from her three years ago and my experience was horrible. I got my kitten when she was 8 weeks old and immediately notices her eye lids were inflamed, eye goop, and runny nose. Ellen said that was just normal and not to worry too much about it. Took my money and sent me home with a sick kitten. That night was like hell. The kitten had runny poop and could barely breath. The very next day I took my kitten to the vet and it turned out that my kitten had a severe case of upper respiratory infection and was positive for FLV. The vet put her on medication for two weeks. Then she got well for a couple of weeks and back sick again. No appetite for food, energy level was very very low and just looking so pale. The kitten gained only 2 ounces in a whole month! So we're back to the vet! After a series of tests and hundreds of dollars, the vet could not figure out what was wrong with the kitten... So I went and visited another vet who ran another series of tests on her. The vet diagnosed her with FIP after ultrasound images showed fluid in her abdomen. Of course Ellen Milas refused to take responsibility or contribute to covering these expenses and said I was on my own. One week later my kitten died because of FIP. Ellen Milas and hallmarkragdolls are dishonest and careless people and I warn everyone not to take the chance of buying from her. She will take your money and turn her back on you. Her cattery is infected with diseases and I even heard that she breeds cats infected with the HCM gene and she also breeds fathers to daughters. Ellen milas and hallmark ragdolls should be put out of business for good and should not be allowed to ever own a cat. Ellen Milas, if you reading this, I hope you can sleep at night knowing how much pain and suffering you caused me and all the other people who bought kittens from you.
Saturday September 18, 2010, 12:26 pm
Casey L, I am Hallmark Ragdolls' webmaster. I've been to Ellen Milas' home(s) many times over the past six years and I have NEVER witnessed ANY of her cats being afflicted with either parasites or disease. She may have been guilty of being a clutterbug at times in the past but her home, no matter how small, was always clean and sanitary. Clutter is not 'filth'. The only time she has ever let anyone take home a cat without its first vaccinations has been when she specifically noted it on the buyer's contract to remind them to get the vaccinations (this has only happened when she ran out of vaccinations and a buyer refused to wait). In addition, Ellen has all her cats tested for every imaginable genetic defect and common illness; this is part of the health guarantee all buyers receive. When receiving new breeding stock from other breeders, she takes all the right precautions before mixing populations. She is not a careless breeder.
Saturday September 18, 2010, 12:38 pm
Mike M, I likewise doubt your story. I don't doubt the kitten died, and my heart goes out to you there, but I know from experience that kittens, who have immature immune systems, often give false positives when tested for FelV. That is just one of the many tests Ellen's cats receive before new populations from other breeders are integrated, and she does all appropriate genetic testing as well. It's what you pay for when you buy from a breeder. Kittens do sometimes get sick due to immature immune systems, so she was not out of line in informing you that the kitten would likely recover and be fine. In any case I can't understand why you would take home a sick kitten! The contract you signed explained that you had every right to exchange your kitten (and let Ellen nurse it back to health), and I don't believe for a moment that Ellen did not honor that upon your asking. I've no doubt that if you contact Ellen today and tell her what happened to the kitten, she would do her best to make it right with you. You are irresponsible with spreading false rumors on the Internet.

I posted a comment back in 2006 I believe about Alice Baker. My husband and I had a positive experience with Alice. As I stated in my original post...we got Trixie back in 2002 (if my memory is correct) and I went back and forth with Alice prior to getting Trix. She did not just let her Ragdolls go to anyone. I felt she really got to know the buyer before letting the kitten go. We had gone out to her home in Buena Park (up against Knotts Berry Farm) a couple of times before we finally got to bring Trix home for good. Her house was clean - she was clean and I liked her set up. She went over the top for us because Trixie had a tough time getting use to our home. So I called Alice to get some feedback from her and she loaned us one of her little cat crates (that's what I call them but there is probably another name for it) and my husband drove out to get it that evening. It was a God send for Trixie and did help a lot. She was VERY accomodating . We took Trix back out for some shots that Alice gave to her. I have to say, the kittens I saw in her living room were the cutest. Trixie is still with us and is thriving. She is a sweetheart and has a new sister (rescue) tortie named Riley and a Shih Tzu male dog for a brother. lol Trixie is still the QUEEN of the house however. I just hate to see this hate talk in here when people had a good experiance with Alice. I don't know what happened to Alice but she was a joy to work with and I had thought about getting another ragdoll from Alice as we moved in 2010 to a big house so I have room for another cat or dog.
