MARLBOROUGH- Sister Patricia Kelley, RGS (Sr. Mary Daniel) died at Good Shepherd Center on September 8, 2006 after a (brief) illness. She was 80 years of age and had been a Sister of the Good Shepherd for 58 years.
Sister Patricia was born Patricia Therese on St. Patrick's Day in Medford, MA the daughter of John T. and Bertha (Green) Kelley. She was educated at Immaculate Conception School and Girls' Catholic High School in Malden, MA and received her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Regis College, Weston, MA in 1948. She subsequently received her Master's Degree as a Psychiatric Social Worker from the Catholic University of America. Sister Patricia entered the Good Shepherd Novitiate in Peekskill, NY in 1948 to begin her formal training for her long career caring for the poor and marginalized of society, with special focus on teen-age girls and women. She became casework supervisor and Director of Social Service at Mt. Florence residential treatment center in Peekskill, NY until 1961 when she was missioned to Springfield, MA as a social worker and Director of Social Service, returning again to Peekskill in the same capacity. She was asked to serve at Villa Loretto in Peekskill as Executive Director, and later became social work supervisor and Director of Social Service at St. Anne's Institute in Albany, NY.
In 1978 she began a long 12-year career as Director of Catholic Family and Community Services of Warren County, Warrensburg, New York. In 1987 she was awarded the Liberty Bell Award for that year as part of the Law Day observance in that county. Given yearly since 1966 to a non-lawyer who offers a significant contribution to the community, Sister Patricia was cited for her "help and assistance to those in need." Sister Patricia was director of the project to provide help for domestic violence victims and to establish safe homes for women and children in emergency situations.
Sister Patricia's many talents in her field continued to find expression in a variety of human services including chaplain at St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls, NY. During this time she was invited to go to Guatemala by the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. In 1996 she was actively involved in providing social services for mothers and babies in Texas at the Low Birthweight Development Center in Dallas.
Sister Patricia celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 1998 and has continued to be involved with the world-wide Good Shepherd program called "Handcrafting Justice," which utilizes the skills of impoverished women in the Third World, providing training programs for their specialized crafts, such as weaving, and handcrafted products of all kinds. The sisters provide markets in the United States and Australia that will generate income for these women struggling for economic justice and independence in the developing world. Sister Patricia has conducted many fairs in Hudson, MA and Marlborough, MA even up to the time of her last illness. People have been generous, and all the proceeds go to the women creating the hand-crafted items.
Sister Patricia also served as Chaplain at New Horizons of Marlborough over the past two years.
Sister Patricia is survived by first cousins, Bernadette Armstrong of Hanover, Veronica White, Claire DeVincentis and Patricia White all of Bridgewater and John White of Wareham. She is also survived by many second cousins.

Robert Rivard at Good Shepherd Center Chapel at 406 Hemenway Street, Marlborough, MA 01752 on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Calling hours will be held on Monday, September 11, 2006 from 4-8 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Center Chapel with a prayer service at 6:30 pm.  Sister Mary Dorothy Ryan

Sister Mary Dorothy Ryan, R.G.S. (Religious of the Good Shepherd), also known as Sister Mary of Our Lady of Good Counsel, died Feb. 2, 2009, at the Marie Esther Health Center in Marlborough, Mass. She was 87 years of age and had been a Sister of the Good Shepherd for 64 years. Sister Dorothy served the community in various roles during her 24 years at Mount Florence in Peekskill, N.Y., and was later missioned to the Good Shepherd program in the Wickatunk section of Marlboro, where she served as a social worker at Collier High School, becoming superior and executive director of the school program. In 1977 she founded the Kateri Environmental Center and Day Camp for economically disadvantaged children and served as its director until 1980. As a member of the Wickatunk Good Shepherd community for the next 26 years, Sister Dorothy was also involved in social work for several programs in New York, New Jersey and Baltimore. Surviving are two sisters, Frances Blount and Rita Martin, both of Monroe; a brother, William Ryan of Hilton Head, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Chapel in Wickatunk, followed by burial at St. James Cemetery in Woodbridge. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Freeman Funeral Home, Manalapan. Memorial donations may be made to the Kateri programs sponsored by Collier Youth Services in Wickatunk.

Sister Joan Steffens, 80

HARWICH — Sister Joan Steffens (Sister Mary Elizabeth) died at Epoch Senior Healthcare of Harwich, died on Nov. 7, 2007, after a long illness. She was 80 years of age and had been a Sister of the Good Shepherd for 59 years.

Sister Joan was born in Newton, the daughter of Albert J. and Anna (O'Brien) Steffens. She was educated at Sacred Heart Schools, Newton Center, and received her Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Regis College, Weston, in 1948. She subsequently received her MSW in psychiatric social work at Catholic University, Washington, D.C.

Sister Joan entered the Good Shepherd Novitiate in Peekskill, N.Y., in 1948 to begin her formal training at St. Germaine's Home for her long career caring for the poor and marginalized of society, with special focus on teenage girls and women. She was professed in 1951 and missioned as a social worker to Villa Loretto, Peekskill, N.Y., where she worked with young women, who were most in need of hope and love. During her six years at the Villa, she also served as supervisor of Group Life until she was asked for in Hartford, Conn., where she was given the responsibility of director of Social Services, a position she held for eight years.

A talented social worker, she also served as director of Social Service in Marlborough, and in Morristown, N.J., and in 1971 Sister Joan became involved in the diagnostic program at 17th Street in New York City for the next six years. She continued to keep up with her studies, including religious education, at Fordham University in New York to prepare herself for further service with Catholic Charities in Newark, N.J., where she worked with infant foster care and adoptions.

In 1983, she served as chaplain in Bellevue Hospital in New York for eight years, at the end of which she "retired" and volunteered her services to the Xavier Society for the Blind in New York City. In 2005, she was missioned to Good Shepherd Center in Marlborough, where she continued to serve in a ministry of prayer and congregational service in the Good Shepherd mission.

Sister Joan is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Janet Steffens of Plymouth; her sister, Anne Linnehan of Orleans; her sister-in-law, Dottie Steffens of Newton Highlands; many beloved nieces and nephews; and many loving friends, including those from the Xavier Society for the Blind. She was predeceased by her twin brother, Richard, in 2006.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered for Sister Joan by the Rev. Robert Rivard of the Sons of Mary at Good Shepherd Center, on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be at Good Shepherd Center, on Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Burial will take place at Mount Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury.

Expressions of sympathy in Sister Joan's memory may be made to the Good Shepherd Retirement Fund, 406 Hemenway St., Marlborough. Sister Theresa Munger RGS (Sister Mary of St. Margaret of Scotland) died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham. She was 81.

Born in Pittsfield, Sister Theresa was a daughter of the late George and Flora (Elser) Munger. She was a graduate of Watertown High School, Class of 1945.

She received an associate’s degree in applied science with a major in recreation supervision from Orange County Community College in Middletown, N.Y. She received a bachelor of science degree in human development, with a minor in counseling, from State University of New York (Empire State Division), Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

After entering the Good Shepherd Novitiate, Sister Theresa began her formal training at St. Germaines Home in Peekskill, N.Y. Missioned to Morristown, N.J., she taught business math, religion and vocational skills. At 17th Street in New York City, she worked with youngsters in detention and continued to provide vocational training before being missioned to Albany, N.Y., where she also offered vocational subjects as well as teaching drama and sports to the youngsters at St. Anne Institute. In 1962, became childcare supervisor in Villa Loretto in Peekskill, N.Y.

Sister Theresa developed the recreation program at Empire State. In 1971, she taught in parish schools including St. Joseph Parish in Middletown, where she served as a physical education instructor, a CCD teacher, and conducted a social and counseling club. Following this, she became physical education director for grades one through eight at Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Marlborough, and taught art to fifth-graders as well. For the next 10 years she served as a child care worker in Lowell, and also in Wellesley. In 1993, Sister Theresa retired and became involved in community service and worked with the elderly in Watertown and subsequently in Marlborough, where she served in congregational service at Good Shepherd Center.

Sister Theresa celebrated her Golden Jubilee on Sept. 8, 2001, at Good Shepherd Center in Marlborough, and later with family and friends in Watertown.

She leaves her sister, Margaret Burke of Natick; her brother, Fred Munger of Watertown; her sister-in-law, Joyce Munger of Watertown; many nieces and nephews; and her friends, Don Shepherd and Emily Maitin, and their children, Melissa and Jeremy, of Wellesley Hills and the Shepherd-Maitin family.

She was sister of the late George, Robert, Harry and Walter Munger.

Her Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, Aug. 15, at Good Shepherd Center Chapel, Marlborough. The Rev. Robert Rivard offiated.

Burial was in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Watertown.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Patrick’s Manor, 863 Central St., Framingham, MA 01701; or to Good Shepherd Retirement Fund, 406 Hemenway St., Marlborough, MA 01752.

Sister Mary Camille Madarang, R.G.S.
a nurse who served in the archdiocese, died June 17 at University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Mass. She was 81. She did health services work in Manhattan at Good Shepherd Services, 1989 to 1998, and at Euphrasian Residence, 1962 and 1991. She was a nurse at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, 1987-1991; Cabrini Medical Center, 1986-1987; and St. Clare's Hospital, 1984-1986. She was an infirmarian and camp nurse at Mount Florence in Peekskill, 1962-1963 and 1965-1966, and also taught there. She served as assistant group mother at St. Gerard's in Manhattan, 1963-1965. Born in the Philippines, she entered the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in 1959 and professed final vows in 1967. She held a nursing degree from the Philippine General School of Nursing in the Philippines. A Funeral Mass was offered June 20 at Good Shepherd Center Chapel in Marlborough, Mass., with burial at Mount Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury, Mass.

HARWICH — Sister Mary Magdalen (Doris Irene Dubois), RGS, 80, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at Epoch Senior Health Care Center of Harwich after a long illness. She had been a sister of the Good Shepherd for 58 years.

Born in Chicopee, the daughter of John B. and Irene (Ouelette), she attended St. Joan of Arc Grammar School and Chicopee High School. She entered the Good Shepherd Novitiate in 1948 in Peekskill, N.Y., where she began her formal training for the Good Shepherd mission of rehabilitation of women in need, with special focus on teen-age girls and families.

An outstanding seamstress, she began her career by training young women in vocational sewing in the community's robery, making habits for the sisters. Her skill in forming the young led to her appointment as formation directress and superior of the Contemplative Sisters' Novitiate at Mt. Florence in Peekskill. This led to her appointment as superior of the professed community in Garrison, N.Y., and then provincial director of all the Contemplative communities in the New York region.

Subsequently, she was chosen as delegate to the Good Shepherd Generalate in Rome, a role that took her to all the Good Shepherd communities in 67 countries in the world. Before coming to Marlborough, she was coordinator of the Good Shepherd community at the provincialate in Jamaica, N.Y.

In addition to these many responsible positions, Sister Mary Magdalen was also engaged in retreat work during her various posts in the community. She celebrated her golden jubilee on Aug. 15, 1998, at Good Shepherd Center with many relatives and friends.

On Dec. 1, 2004, Sister Mary Magdalen was missioned to Epoch of Harwich, where in her ministry of prayer she continued to reach out to all in need of support and help.

She leaves her brother, Thomas Dubois, and his wife, Terry; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was offered Monday, Feb. 12, at 10 a.m., at the Good Shepherd Center Chapel on Hemenway Street, Marlborough, by the Rev. Robert Rivard, FMSI, of the Sons of Mary, Framingham.

Sister Marie Hermann

HARWICH — Sister Marie Hermann (Sister Marie deLourdes), 80, died at Epoch of Harwich, Harwich, on Dec. 17, 2007 after an illness. She had been a Sister of the Good Shepherd for 50 years.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 31, 1927, she was the daughter of Max Charles and Mary Jane (Higgins) Hermann.

She attended St. Agatha’s School and Mercy Juniorate in Brooklyn, N.Y., and received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fordham University in New York. Sister Marie entered the Good Shepherd Novitiate on Feb. 28, 1957 to prepare for her lifelong ministry to the poor and those marginalized by society, with special emphasis on women and teenage girls. She made Final Vows on Sept. 12, 1964. Her skills as child care supervisor were early recognized, and she served in this role in Villa Loretto, Peekskill, N.Y.; Wickatunk, N.J.; Mt. Florence, Peekskill, N.Y.; Albany, N.Y.; and Huntington, N.Y. In 1980 she became involved with the “Women in Need” program at St. Anne’s in New York City and also the same ministry on 14th Street, New York. In 1984 she became a chaplain in prison ministry for 10 years at the New York City Correctional Institution for Men. In 1994 she served as administrative chaplain at Rikers Island, New York City, and in 2004 she was involved in pastoral care at the Cabrini Adult Day Care Center in New York City.

Sister Marie is survived by her sister, Dolores Guner of Florida; her sisters-in-law, Nancy Hermann and Madeline Hermann, and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for Sister Marie at Good Shepherd Center, 406 Hemenway St., Marlborough, at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 21, by the Rev. Robert Rivard, Sons of Mary. Visiting hours at Good Shepherd Center will be on Thursday, Dec. 20, 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be at Mt. Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury.

Sister Marie Hermann, R.G.S.
who served for many years as a prison chaplain, died Dec. 17 in Harwich, Mass. She was 80. She became a chaplain at the New York City Correctional Institution for Men on Rikers Island in 1984. After 10 years, she became Rikers Island administrative chaplain, 1994-2004. In 2004 she did pastoral care service at Cabrini Adult Day Care Center, Manhattan. Born in Brooklyn, she entered the Good Shepherd Sisters in 1957 and took the religious name Sister Marie deLourdes. She professed final vows in 1964. In her early ministry, she was a child care supervisor at Villa Loretta and Mount Florence in Peekskill. She also served in that capacity in Albany, Huntington and in New Jersey. She became involved in the "Women in Need" program in Manhattan in 1984, where she ministered until going into prison service. She held a bachelor's degree from Fordham University. Surviving is a sister, Dolores Guner. A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 21 at Good Shepherd Center, Marlborough, Mass., with burial in Mount Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury, Mass.
