Aloha, it has been brought to our attention that Lahinialuna boarding program is in crisis.

The recent decision to consider shutting down the highly respectable and long treasured boarding program at the historical Lahainaluna High School has me deeply disappointed, angered and concerned.

I realize that many hard financial decisions must be made at this time. However I do not see any benefit whatsoever destroying such a time-honored tradition, while I do see a very strong benefit in preserving it and encouraging it.

The boarding program offers a unique opportunity to participate in something larger than oneself and to support community in a way that is getting harder and harder to find. It also lowers expenses for the state at large, since the residents of the boarding program take care of much of the school needs themselves.

Killing off this program would mean losing the support of literally hundreds of thousands of dollars, and will deprive many individuals who otherwise may not be able to afford or access a high-quality education. This deprivation has long term effects that would ripple through generations.

The community that supports the Lahainaluna boarding program extends statewide and beyond. The positive contributions are numerous, some examples being teaching teamwork and strong work ethic. Some examples of these efforts being caring for the cattle on site, and more recently caring for and upgrading kitchens, dorms and even a computer lab!

These are but a few of the many blessings this program has shared with this community, and the values taught through the program will follow these young people throughout life, further supporting and benefiting others wherever they may go in the future.

Losing the boarding program will mean a great historical loss for the entire nation. We live in an age where so much is fragmented, and so much is given for others to do,  outsourcing is rampant. The decision on discontinuing the program is another symptom of this disease that must be healed.

I urge you to reconsider and take part in healing and preservation of our history rather then furthering destruction of that which we can not afford to lose. Please do not let the Boarding program at Lahainaluna High School be another causality of this illness.

Note:
The next BOE meeting will be held on Dec 15th at the Queen Liliuokalani Bldg directly across Queens Hospital with limited public parking adjacent to the bldg.  It will begin at 3:00 pm  and will not end until public testimonies are first received and business matters concluded or deferrered. All letters and email received before then can be used as testimony.
