These are the hardest things for me as a parent; many of them are my expectations of myself about what I need to do to be a good parent, and the expectation are sometimes hard to meet.
1. Being wise on a dime
2. Being an anchor of equilibrium during difficult times
3. Establishing trust and openness
4. Letting go
5. Trusting they will be safe -- letting go of fear
6. Setting expectations that they help out young enough that they do!
7. Setting reasonable parameters for acceptable behavior
8. Over parenting -- it is good for them to see we are human
9. Interrupted sleep (when they are young)
10. Feeling their pain

Never take parenting for granted. The day that God forbid your parenting duties are ripped away by the death of your child, parenting will be all you wish you could do. |

11. Realizing that you have done all that you can.

This book helped mys ister tremendously: Parent Savvy: Straight Anwers to Your Family's Financial, Legal & Practical Questions! For a first time mother. It's from Nolo Press http://www.nolo.com. The other helpful title was Busy Famiy's Guide to Estate Planning, if you need one. ;-) |
