The bitter element in certain extra-virgin olive oils, oleocanthol, is actually good medicine, not just tasty salad dressing.

--"A daily dose of 50 g or 4 tablespoons of olive oil confers the equivalent of around 10% of the recommended ibuprofen dose for adult pain relief, say researchers led by Paul Breslin of the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, who discovered the effect. So although it won't cure a headache, it may give you some of the long-term benefits of repeated ibuprofen use, including helping to ward off Alzheimer's."--

Being anti-inflammatory it would also reduce microglia (brain inflammation) helping to resist both Alzheimers & Parkinson's non-intrusively. Great results! I didn't see extra virgin in other articles regarding the result. What's the inside word?

The research is ongoing but looks promising. If you have a specific question about these possible oleocanthol applications, or if you think of an avenue of research for oleocanthol that hasn't been suggested yet, feel free to contact my bro' at Monell Chemical Sense Ctr. in PA. He has several scientific articles partially accessible online where you can see if your questions have been answered already. What I do know about this compound is that it is found in significant quantities only in extra virgin olive oils from olives pressed in certain ways, at certain times of year and stages of olive ripeness. The only way you can find the right stuff is to go to an ethnic or gourmet store and taste everything. If an olive oil leaves an aftereffect of very slightly irritating the back of your throat, then Bingo! you've found it!

You should come to Bar and Ulcinj in Montenegro for olive oil. Most of the olive oil produced here is definitely well primed with oleocanthol. Unfortunately the trend is to modernize the old presses and methods of processing as people prefer the smooth and tasteless processed oils.

I live in the Vega, South WEST OF ORGIVA, the capital of the Alpujarras, below the Sierra Nevadas mountains in Andalucia (Granada province) a lot of olives are grown here but in an organic manner mostly, I harvest my olives from November till February & cold press, it has a slight bitter taste & I was told by a friend who had lived in Tuscany that my oil was as good as the Tuscan oil, I also had it tested by a German Laboratory & the quality was top notch. There are many old trees around here hundreds of years old also many young trees.

The use of oleocanthol in treatment for neurological disease is being explored. In order for claims to be more than rumors, testing takes a long time. And unfortunately, some drug and other companies that got a whiff of this are already trying to make the pure scientific research proprietary.

The jury is still out on exactly what such parties as the FDA would approve as medicinal uses for oleocanthol, but if you find an extra virgin olive oil that briefly leaves a little irritation around your soft palate and throat when you taste a spoonful, buy it! Doesn't seem to matter what country it's from--the key seems to be the timing and handling of the fruit.

If you're a high-oleocanthol olive oil producer, then I'd definitely promote your stuff to such chains as Trader Joe's and Whole Foods with the hint that there may be extra health benefits over oil that just tastes good. This stuff is not for long, hot fries, though, because it may smoke--just for salads, saute, taboule, and other cold and lightly cooked dishes. Great as a little extra on a pizza.
