-Getting The “Broomstick”!-

I’m sure most of you reading this have seen the movie, “The Wizard of Oz.” It is a wonderful old movie, and I think I have watched it every year of my life since I was about 5 years old. As you get older, you begin to see that it can appreciated on many more levels than when you watched it as a child. It is filled with “symbolism” and meanings far beyond what is on the surface. That is why I love this movie at this point in my life. I can still live, however, without the “Munchkins” and the “Flying Monkeys”, to be perfectly honest! But, hey, nothing is perfect, right? Anyway…

The most “inspirational” part of the whole movie to me, is when the 4 friends (Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion) set out to get that broomstick from the “Wicked Witch of the West.” After all the trials-and-tribulation of just getting to the “Emerald City”, and then the seemingly impossibility of getting to see the Wizard at all, they finally get in to see him. They think they completed their task! But in reality, their journey had only just begun. The Wizard tells Dorothy and her friends, that he WILL grant their wishes for them, but they must perform one “small task” for him first, to prove “their worthiness.” This tiny task… is to bring him back the broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West. Obviously, he gives them this task, assuming that it will be utterly impossible to achieve, and he will never have to “grant their wishes” for them at all. The hugely “inspirational” part of this for me, is that despite the seeming IMPOSSIBILITY of being able to complete this task, they set out to do it anyway! They simply trust in God, the Universe, Fate, or whatever you want to call it, to aid them in making this happen. They all desire their “wishes” so much (a brain for the Scarecrow, a heart for the Tin Man, courage for the Lion, and returning home to Kansas for Dorothy), that despite the “gloomy” prospects of what lay ahead for them all, they head out for the Witch’s Castle anyway. They have NO IDEA how they will get this broomstick away from the Wicked Witch, but they go ahead, and without worrying about how it will happen, they just forge ahead, and trust that somehow, someway, it will happen.

In the process of doing this, Dorothy gets captured by the Wicked Witch and imprisoned in her castle. The castle itself seems completely impossible for the others to get into to help her. But again… they get in, and let her out of the room she is imprisoned in by the Wicked Witch. Are their troubles now over? Absolutely not. AGAIN it looks completely hopeless for them, as they are surrounded by the Witch’s “Palace Guards”, and are completely surrounded by a &ldquoocket full of spears”, to quote the Wicked Witch. Achieving their goal of getting the broomstick is the last thing on their minds at this point. All they desire is to survive! None of them know anything about the Wicked Witch’s vulnerability to water, but in an act of total “selflessness”, as the Witch sets the Scarecrows arm on fire, Dorothy throws a bucket of water on her friend’s arm, simply to save him, and put out the fire. She is only trying to help her friend, but in the process, she ends up “melting” the Wicked Witch, who is about to kill them. None of them had ANY idea how they would ever get the Wicked Witch’s broomstick, but that did not stop them… and they got it anyway. The Witch “melts away”, and the Palace Guards are so happy that “the Wicked Witch is dead!”, that they happily give Dorothy the broomstick to take back to the Wizard. None of them questioned how they would achieve this “impossible dream” that they set out on, they simply set out, undaunted by the staggering odds against their success, and trusted that somehow, someway, “The Universe” would help them to find a way to make it happen…….. and it did.

I think this is a wonderful “metaphor” for all of us in our daily lives. If something seems truly important and meaningful to you, and you TRULY desire for it to happen, DO NOT THINK OF ALL THE REASONS WHY IT CAN’T HAPPEN FOR YOU!!! Set out for that “Witch’s Castle” anyway, and trust that you will find a way. Dorothy and her friends have always been a true inspiration for me for that reason. It “couldn’t” happen for them… but it did. Perhaps we should all take a lesson from Dorothy and her friends. And let me leave you with my favorite quote. It is from the German author, Goethe. It says:

“Whatever you can do, or DREAM you can, BEGIN IT!!!

Boldness has genius, power, and MAGIC in it!!!!!!!”

I’ve had that on my wall for 25 years now. It is good to read at least once a week. Read it, “feel” it, and see where it will lead you too.          Take care everyone.   Jim.
