"Are you really an Indian? You know, you should be really angry for what the whiteman did to you,"
How often have I heard that? And not just from First Nations but everyone I have met!
"If I stayed angry, I would never get anything done." That usually is my answer and you would be amazed at their baffled look on their faces. If I kept the pain and anguish in my heart, I would be sitting in a bar, would be doing drugs and be a very sorry ass Indian to look at, to say the least. But there are too many good things in life. My late grandfather always said to me that I should count all the good things that happened to me during the course of the day. Oh sure many negative things happen. But when I go to bed I remember the little girl who came up to me and said, "Sir, your hair is like salt and pepper, just like my grandpa!" with a big smile on her face and her mother seems to bit a little embarassed by her open-minded remark. I smile at her and thank her for the compliment.
I smile as I lay down to sleep.Tonight I will have good dreams to carry me through another day. Yes, life is good.
What separates us from our brothers and sisters who do not walk on two legs? The power to forgive. The most powerful are the ones who willingly forgave. Nelson Mandela. Ghandi. Mother Teresa. And the most powerful of all? Jesus. I believe every person should allowed to pray and worship according to their faith. My sprituality believes we all belong here and that we are all members of the same family. And as such, we should help one another and forgive each others transgressions accordingly.
So, when I first heard John Lennon's song, "Power to the People" I thought,WOW, people are starting to understand what my grandfather was saying! But alas, I was wrong. I have been wrong many times but I never give up. What was it that someone once told me? "A man with many friends cannot fail". The number of friends I have grows every day. That mean you, who are reading this. Easier to travel on the road of LIFE with friends.
So, POWER TO YOU , my friend.
We can do more in this world if we get rid of the anger in our life. Make a difference....Find your balance...Eh-goo-deh!
