Do you have a very favorable, somewhat favorable, somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable impression of BP?
4% Very favorable
18% Somewhat favorable
39% Somewhat unfavorable
33% Very unfavorable
Their favoribality has plummeted almost as fast as the oil has gushed into the Gulf of Mexico - just 22 percent of Americans have any sort of favorable opinion of the company.
And yet, taxes remain anathema. Even with BP almost as popular as anthrax, 46 percent still say they don't want oil companies taxed to pay for future spills (vs 41 percent in favor).
On the other hand, folks have a pretty firm idea of who should be picking up the spectacular tab for the gulf oil spill: only 1 percent say the government should cover it, with 79 percent saying it's the companies responsible who should pay (with 17 percent saying both should pony up).
What do you think? Would you patronize BP? Boycott them (and their subsidiaries ARCO and AM/PM)? Tax them (it's unlikely BP will show a profit for years, but Congress is proposing a direct per-barrel levy)? Or keelhaulthem?
This is insane...
