Hi folks, Wanted to invite you all to this presentation about Emergency Communities, the group I worked with in New Orleans for two months this past winter. They're the alternative relief organization which was so effective, when so many of the traditional groups proved ineffective. Disaster relief in the US is an emerging phenomenon, developing, in a sense, its own culture(s) and politics. A social and political frontier, of sorts. I've written a two-part series on my experiences doing relief work, mostly with Emergency Communities, foranyone who'sinterested. The stories are quite long, but they can be found at: http://bridgenews.org/news/062006/afterflood http://bridgenews.org/news/062006/afterflood2 Here's the info on Thursday's event: A New Model for Disaster Relief: "Warmth and Comfort Amidst the Devastation" Mischa Byruck, Co-Founder of Emergency Communities will speak about Hurricane Katrina, "enlightenment through service, self-initiation, empowerment, the euphoria of the common goal, the sweet soul rhythm of the kitchen." 7 pm, August the 17th Zeitgeist Gallery 186 Hampshire St, Cambridge (Inman Square) 30 minute presentation/slide show; 30 minutes of question/answer; social hour to follow. Emergency Communities, a new kind of disaster relief organization, formed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina seeks to fill gaps in traditional relief models by working to rehabilitate communities, through warm, welcoming environments & healthy, delicious free food. EC is a new, dynamic kind of non-profit, relying entirely on volunteer labor while expanding the meaning of the word "volunteer". "By helping a resident prepare a favorite dish, or celebrate an important religious holiday, these are more meaningful things, we serve up diginity and respect." The slideshow describes why the EC is different from other relief groups. Solar powered showers, recycling, live music, free internet/phones for residents. EC is non-political/non-religious, young/old, men/women, of every race, religion, and ethnicity. The EC welcomes everyone to help in the recovery effort. It runs two full-service kitchens in Louisiana and has served more than 200,000 meals. Emergency Communities collaborates with many other relief organizations, including The United Way, 2nd Harvest, UMCOR, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Americorps, and Catholic Charities. The group also receives aid from FEMA and the Red Cross. "Still, our most important contributions come from our volunteers, who work tirelessly and cheerfully on our sites." Sponsored by the Citizen Action Team (www.citizenactionteam.org). CAT operates a nationwide database to help facilities/organizations on the front line.
