Read all about how other people just like you and your children have learned without being taught...what helps and what hinders, and what they have achieved in their lives as a result. Laugh, cry and identify with parents who are helping themselves and their children learn from the real world...and learning a lot about themselves along the way.

Think about how we are limited by a society that believes in coercive education...and how we can transcend those limits in our daily lives. Find support and reassurance for interest-based, learner-directed education and non-coercive parenting.

Here's what some of our readers have been saying about Life Learning.

This type of learning is sometimes known as "unschooling", "unstructured  homeschooling" or "natural learning". We prefer the term "life learning" and see it as a lifestyle rather than as a method of homeschooling. Here is more information about the philosophy of life learning.

Our regular columnists provide honest and thought-provoking ideas that will you think outside-the-box about ways to encourage and support active, self-directed learning. Most of our contributors are life learning parents and teens, or adults who learned without schooling as children. In addition, some of the world’s foremost educational thinkers and writers share their journeys of exploration into the many different ways people learn.

Life Learning is published by Life Media, a 30-year-old consumer magazine and book publishing company. Along with its sister magazine Natural Life and its forerunner Child’s Play Magazine, Life Learning represents three decades of publishing experience in the home-based education and natural parenting fields. It is dedicated to providing information, support and inspiration to families and individuals around the world who are learning without schooling.

Life Learning's editor Wendy Priesnitz is an award-winning journalist, poet and author of nine books, including School Free - The Home Schooling Handbook and Challenging Assumptions in Education, and a contributor to many others, including Linda Dobson's The Homeschooling Book of Answers and the collaborative Creating Learning Communities. She has also been a magazine and newspaper editor since 1976.

Wendy and her husband and business partner Rolf are the parents of 32- and 34-year-old daughters who learned without schooling, and one of North America's unschooling pioneers. She founded the Canadian Alliance of Home Schoolers in 1979, and continues to speak at conferences across North America about learner-directed education and deschooling society. She has been described in national media as "the high priestess of home schooling" (Today's Parent Magazine) and "an acknowledged home school guru" (National Post newspaper). I think I should begin this post by congratulating all parents who
have taken the initiative (a tremendous one in terms of
responsibility) to homeschool their children and call upon themselves
the ownership to educate and expose their children about (and on) the
varied facets of education .
Relating homeschooling with Grade schooling I will say that
homeschooling is a by far much more evolved concept as homeschooling
promotes constant and continual learning as a part of life .
The essential plus with a homeschooling child would be that he would
be more open to discovering and understanding new ideas as opposed to
what I call gunpowder learning , where ideas are taught and received
in a class room environment and competitiveness is graded , which
essentially translates into the student learning by the night and
forgetting by the day .Homeschooling promotes excellence .
As a teacher who has been interacting with students going to regular
schools and students preparing by the night for tests it was actually
a great experience to teach my first student who homeschools.
I have always had to strike a balance between , a students’
performance ,helping her/him solve (or master ) exercises and the
actual fundamental understanding of the true subject . And have found
that the former takes precedence over the latter in many cases and
Maths turns into a collection of formulae for a lot of students.
Learning from first principles is the key to success in Maths and
solving an exercise sheet on a particular topic is but a small
resultant of the actual importance of Maths as a subject. It is to be
considered as a small outcome of the learning process. Our school
systems fail to understand this very concept and are restrictive to
the development of the subject as they can statistically (and
humanely) test just this small outcome which is solving a set of
questions. A homescholled student can definitely be expected to have a
much more holistic understanding of the subject .
I think the key benefit of homeschooling is that it promotes ‘Free
Thinking ‘ as opposed to monopolized thinking .
