Recommended Three Stage Approach
Before installing a wind, solar or any other renewable energy (RE) system it is strongly recommended that you implement the following stages.
- Switch to energy saving lighting. Various programs are available.
- Replace current appliances with energy efficient appliances.
- Install water-saving and thus energy-saving units.
- Have house tested for heat loss and fix all locations where heat is escaping. There may still be a government program (Federal and/or Provincial) still in effect whereby you can request a test. They blow air into your home and evaluate leakages and give you a report. We will recheck on this for you. The federal program was cancelled but there was talk of reinstating it.
Stage 2 Install a Solar Thermal System
There is a 10% rebate available in Nova Scotia (application form is attached) for up to $5,000.00 for solar thermal installations. Solar thermal is very effective for applications that require high heat outputs.
Other provinces and states often have similar programs and you are well advised to inquire with the appropriate federal and state or provincial government offices in your area.
Stage 3: Review the Various RE Approaches Available for You.
With your RE supplier explore solar-energy, wind-energy, geo-thermal energy and even a generator driven by bio-diesel fuel as alternatives for establishing independence from the oil and the power company.
The point is to own your own energy system just as you own your own home, car and appliances. Feel free to contact us for your RE evaluation and needs.
