From "Galloping Scared", published in Vanity Fair Magazine:
"As the horses hit a straightaway at full stride, a camouflaged fence gradually funnels them into a trap. Close to the neck of the trap, the roundup crew releases a "Judas horse," which runs to the front of the pack and leads the mustangs directly into a tiny corral. Once inside, the horses screech to a stop, piling up on top of one another as dust flies, the gate slams, and the helicopter pulls away to go back for more horses. When the crew is finished, a few of the horses will be released back onto the range, some will be put up for adoption, but most will be relocated to government holding facilities, and a large number will be eligible to be sold to slaughterhouses, thanks to Senator Conrad Burns (Republican, Montana)."

We need lots of phone calls and emails to US Senators asking at minimum that they co-sponsor S 1915, if unable to co-sponsor, commit to vote YES on S1915, AND call the bill for a vote. Thanks everyone!
For support in taking action, see:
http://www.care2.com/c2c/groups/disc.html?gpp=10316&pst=549612
92% of horses slaughtered are young, healthy, and strong. Many are wild horses, former racehorses, and family pets. They are NOT old, decrepit, and lame as opponents of S1915 would have everyone believe.
Also, the whole process from start to finish of slaughtering horses for human consumption is cruel and causes the horses great pain and suffering. From aquisition or capture, to transport, to the kill floor, these sensitive, intelligent, loyal creatures suffer. It is by no means a "humane form of euthanasia" as opponents of S1915 also would have everyone believe.
If you are reading this message, thank you. Please create a share to spread the word. Tell as many of your contacts outside of Care2 to take action as well.
For the horses, Melanie

Fiona said that there are just "so many" horses. Why are there so many unwanted beautiful creatures? Maybe we could stop this from the other end as well. Maybe we need to stop breeding so many and selling them to people who have no long term plans for them. Maybe we need to stop the market demands for horse byproducts. |

Dear Melanie--I have a mustang. I got her as a foal. Her mother had died of injuries in the roundup and she had been struck over the head with a shovel and left to die. She has neurological damage and cannot be ridden, but she is my beloved companion and friend. her name is Lady Diamond. I am a new member so this comment is not timely. Horses are a link to the Divine and it is tragic that so many humans cannot recognize this! Thank you, Dirce |

Thank you all for reading and commenting on my blog. The US House of Representatives is going to vote on a bill this Wednesday 3/7/07 that will restore protections for America's wild horses. I hope you will all take a moment to call or email your US Representative asking that they vote in favor of the bill!

Just a clarification to my earlier comment, that vote was to get the bill out of the House Committee of Natural Resources. I am happy to say that we succeeded! However, we still have a ways to go before this bill becomes the law of the land. Join us in the fight!

I was very disturbed reading about this. I was unaware as are most Americans blinded from the truth by the government controlled media. Blogging about this wont do anything. What we need is to post a video of this type of thing on youtube and putfile webistes. Give the people irrifutable evidence. Of course emailing our Senators helps but getting on the TV is better.
Humans are so cruel. Tens of thousands of years of evolution and we've learned "nothing"!
Nature doesn't need us, we need it!
Thanks Melanie |

What a great counrty like America has to slaughter wild healthy horses for is beyound my grasp of humanity. This should be addressed right away and have a permanent stop put to it horses
are like giant pets even though they are considered livestock.
Don't we have enough beef and pork and chicken fish and veal to meet our needs.
How much inhumanity must we endure for the profit of these greedy people that continue this barbaric act.
Are we as barbaric as the yearly baby seal hunters from Canada!
Please stop this practice here in America. |

See THE MISFITS, the last movie ever starred in by Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and Montgomery Clift, all of whom died soon afterward. Heartbreaking story of the connection between horse killing, fast food and dog food. When will people EVER get it? On the one hand we romanticise HORSE WHISPERERS. On the other hand, we are culling the last of the wild and then wondering why we are so warped, mentally unwell and alienated once it is all gone |

There are too many backyard Horse Breeders in the US. I cannot stand Horse slaughter, but it seems like we keep getting horses that are not wanted. People who breed are the main problems especially when they do not have good stock. Everyone thinks they have a Good Stud or a Good mare, why cant you be happy with 1 horse. Quit clogging our slaughter houses and sale barns with unwanted animals whiom it not their fault. These animals need and want homes. They dont want to be dinner. They want to be loved....Steph |

I watch as the wild horses run free, free to live life and as they stand grazing they stand with pride and confidence and if you are lucky enough to see their eyes you can see the sparkle of joy and happiness. Then for selfish reasons they are put behind gates and their freedom is taken and the slump on their back shows no confidence and their heads hang with no pride and now that you can see in their eyes all you will see is a glaze. Was the trade worth the freedom, beauty, pride, joy and happiness worth it all?And believe it or not the same thing is happening to caring individuals by their spouse.Freedom we all shared and is slowly being taken from us. I love horses and cherish freedom... I once had an experience with a horse while I was just a kid... I saw this horse on my uncle's backyard with Volvo timing belt wrapped around its neck... But when cut it, the horse run freely and it was really a great feeling seeing the horse wit a lot of pride... |

There was a good movie last night on Hallmark with Andrew McCarthy. The BLM was trespassing on his land rounding up wild horses. I have seen wild horses for sale. The BLM requires three things, age 16, I believe two acres per horse, and no criminal record of animal abuse. |

i was raised shoveling there leftovers since i was a kid 9 years old to this day i am still shoveling there leftovers even in the skies above all over the usa i have roamed and been near them.horses started our country probably will outlive our country in fact heres a good article i ran across from
bphouse.com/blazeIt would indeed require limited protections for localism and diversity of ownership, which would include female and minorities. All you have to do to get your protection is to financially out bid Sumner Redstone, CBS, NBC , Time Warner. If your enormous wealth holds out you’re okay.
Unless you or someone you know can afford to out big the biggies, it’s time to click Congress, send email to as many members as you can. Let them know you are not a Martin groupie, not on your worst day.
