The history of white Australia is stained by destruction ... the destruction of many indigenous cultures and people ... and the destruction of millions of hectares of native bushland and old growth forests ... one day in 1987 these two thoughts blended into one ... and thus the words of this song ...

Children of the Sun

On the frozen canvas of the dawn
the artist waits in silence
Her ancient dignity is drawn
She stands a soul in silence
Her black dry flesh tells the story of her life
And the journey of her years
And the terror of her fears
And she cries
She cries for the children of the sun
She cries for the damage that's been done
She wants to hide but there's nowhere to run
For the ancient children of the sun

(...through cycles of light and visions of memories
that reach far back beyond our brief intrusion,
there stands the woman ... younger then, and stronger,
her limbs smooth and firm, protecting her children...
She was the first, and from her came fruit, the forest
the life shared with all ... she is life,
She is the tree who weeps ...)

She weeps for the children of the sun
She weeps for the damage that's been done
She wants to hide but there's nowhere to run
For the ancient children of the sun

She whispers of a time in dreams
The harper plays in silence
A tale of history in green
The shadows dance in silence
She is the dreamtime mother of the trees
And for the dreamtime she sings
Music borne on dragon's wings
And she sings
She sings for the children of the sun
For the time before our time's begun
Oh wondrous sentinel, your time is nearly done
Farewell the children of the sun

Farewell the children of the sun
