The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, then circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say, or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.

We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you. We are in charge of our attitudes. written by Charles Swindoll

You are absolutely RIGHT! Attitude plus strong core values will serve as our anchor in life. Whatever happens to us, we can discern the right path to take and the right decision to make.

Cound not agree more, which is one of my reasons got writing this. Please forgive but I am at a local community reacreation center in which it took just about three months for me to get a pass word in which I used it for the first time today; ansd cannot post a "share"; which defeats my purpose in having a password because I STILL cannot communicate publically, which is one of the purposes of the internet. Please post on the share board, with the hopes that prayers will fix it so that I can continue to post my share . Thank you, Peacenowst

I guess as of late I've been having a difficult time with being positive. I am usually a very positive, upbeat individual that people come to for cheering up. I don't think it is possible to be upbeat and have a positive attitude 100% of the time but gosh I would like to feel better about life and what's to come. How can I continue to have a more positive attitude and how can I change my slumping mood.

Lisa Northam (9)

I have often heard attitude is where it starts and where it ends. You are so right abandon all hope of a better past, meaning we can not change it, and the future is a mystery, all we have is today and the way we react to any given situation. I have been a pessimistic all my life, and that defect has caused me much pain. I am trying to see the glass half full, today, just for today, and maybe if I fake my positive attitude it will actually turn into one. Thank you for your topic. Yes we are in charge of our attitudes.

Attitude is indeed capable of moving mountains or any other obstacle. The fact that one has a choice in how to approach and think about a matter is an empowering one. Since we can only control our own actions and thought, seems to me a key to greater peace of mind is the attitude one has about a matter. So what if you cannot change something, why fret over that, rearrange your attitude. Nothing is 100% anything so save your sweat for something real.

Always keep a smile on your face,
Make your home a welcome place,
Remember never to be unkind
Keep a positive sense of mind.
Your attitude speaks the person that is you.
Our projection of ourselves is what others view. To Bryan I say, I agree with you.
Good Post!

A good thought, but some have disorders that leave them FAR less than 90% in control of their attitude/moods. I think we need to keep that in mind too - especially when someone seems to always have an attitude problem, they may have a medical issue we are unaware of. I'm not trying to distract from your thoughts though - I think it is a good goal for everyone to do the best they can with the control they have to make their day as good as possible. (Sorry if this double/half posts, I hit a key somehow and messed it up)

Bryan: very wise thoughts... Well said. I have a question: where to get the strength for positive attitude? How to cope with broken hopes, unmet expectations, vacuum of communication? Try to change your attitude to something you expect from life and never receive? How to handle loneliness? Well, there are philosophical questions, who knows the answer. I must confess, sometimes my unsatisfied attitude makes me to search for something, to improve myself, to move forward, or, am I wrong? Elena

Hi! I'm almost new on the care2 community.

Lately it's happening to me, that if I talk, read or think about a topic, everything arround, seems to be synchronized on it.

Today's topic with my boss, was: we need to work in our attitude, we need to work in how we can react over the facts.
So I'm very pleased to find out that today's action, it's linked to the blogs.. and I'm also surprised that the very first blog I find in it, it's this one... talking about attitude.

I agree with Mahrya: I'm also having problems in this period of my life, so it's being really difficult being positive.

I don't have "the answer" to Mahrya's final question, but I know also, that I'm tired of being pessimistic and discovering that i'm always right when i think negative, so just for a change, I'm gonna try to think the best. Sometimes at least ;)

Thanks to everyone, Mayra

It is a good wisdom. But, isn't it true that today's life is the result of the past. So, how we react is influenced by our past, education, economy, failures, etc. It is very true that we cannot change the past, but we can learn from the past and make it better.

This is so true. Take for example, if your in a great mood, and say you to to a drive thru, a grocery store or somewhere in a public place & you run into a person who is having a BAD day with a BAD attitude..if your not aware of the way the other persons attitude can change ours if we let it, if we let one persons anger affect our attitude in anyway. Or their bad attitude.

Charles, I THINK there are many srtings as there are many emotions all deserving and waiting to be struck, strummed or brushed by discilpline, passion, knowledge, emotion, and oh yes, perhaps, alittle attitude. Make it a fact that you're sweating, breathing heavy, and cleansed when the measure has run its course to your satifaction. Let your thoughts be foucused and resolute. Let your attitude be the product of these things. Rely on attitude too much, as if it stands alone and defines a person, your ability to effectively react will decrease. We are the captains of our own ships and we all need more than one string too convey the pitch and tones of life.90%is the wind of life blowing 10% is catching it. Is your attitude justified and dressed for the occasion? Is it thought out and earned? Is it backed by passion, facts, and the truth? and is it restrained in some way? no one wants a paper cut supplied by someone elses ego. Alot of times we can make a change in the way people act, for example guilt is a powerful weopon, as is love, as is truth.

You need to believe in genies

The Genie

A Husband takes his wife to play her first
game of golf.....Of course, the wife promptly
hacked her first shot right through the window of the
biggest house adjacent to the course.

The husband cringed, "I warned you to be
careful! Now we'll have to go up
there find the owner apologize and see how much
your lousy drive is goin' to cost us."

So the couple walked up to the house and knocked
on the door. A warm voice said, "Come on in."

When they opened the door they saw the damage
that was done: glass was all over the place,
and a broken antique bottle was lying' on its side near
the broken window.
A man reclinin' on the couch asked, "Are you the people
that broke my window?" "Uh...yeah, sir.
We're sure sorry about that," the husband replied.
"Oh, no apology is necessary. Actually I want to thank
you. You see, I'm agenie, and I've been trapped in that
bottle for a thousand years. Now that you've released
me, I'm allowed to grant three wishes. I'll give you
each one wish, but if you don't mind, I'll keep the last
one for myself."
"Wow, that's great!" the husband said. He pondered
a moment and blurted out, "I'd like a million dollars
a year for the rest of my life." "No problem," said the
genie. "You've got it, it's the least I can do. And
I'll guarantee you a long, healthy life!"

" And now you, young lady, what do you want?" the
genie asked. "I'd like to own a gorgeous home
complete with servants in every country in the
world,"she said.
"Consider it done," the genie said. "And your homes
will always be safe from fire, burglary and
natural disasters!"

"And now," the couple asked in unison, "what's your
wish, genie?"
"Well,
since I've been trapped in that bottle and haven't
been with a woman in more than a thousand years,
my wish is to have sex with your wife."

The husband looked at his wife and said, "Gee, honey,
you know we both now have a fortune, and all those
houses. What do you think?"
She mulled it over for a few moments and said,
"You know, you're right. Considerin' our good fortune,
I guess I wouldn't mind, but what about you, honey?"

"You know I love you sweetheart," said the husband.
"I'd do the same for you!"

So the genie and the woman went upstairs where they
spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying' each other.
The genie was insatiable.
After about three hours of non-stop sex, the genie
rolled over and looked directly into her eyes and asked
"How old are you and your husband?"
"Why, we're both 35," she responded breathlessly.
"No Kiddin'. Thirty-five years old and both of you still
believe in genies?"

I've read that quote before and always felt that it was the other way around... Not that I disagree with your reasoning, yet, There are other definitions for the word 'attitude', some things in our lives are deeply engrained and it's not so simple to forget what we have gone through, as an example, One goes through a war, and comes out the other side relieved to be alive, and then another wishes he had died with his friends. Is that attitude? Some people feel so deeply about their personal experiences that they never get over them. You seem a rational individual and I value your opinion, but Attitude is a vast word that has many connontations that are misconstrued and pidgeonholed. Have a good evening, Bryan.. Thanks for letting me give my 'twist' on your topic.. Lynn M. Kane

Although I think perhaps it sounds a bit harsh to someone who is struggling to keep a positive attitude, I think there is a lot of truth in this quote from Dr Wayne Dyer.
"If you believe that you don’t choose to be unhappy try to imagine this course of events. Each time you become unhappy you are subjected to some treatment you find unpleasant. Perhaps you are locked in a room alone for long periods of time or, conversely, forced into a crowded elevator where you must stand for days. You may be deprived of all food or forced to eat some dish you find particularly distasteful. Or perhaps you will be tortured – physically tortured by others, rather than mentally tortured by yourself. Imagine that you were subjected to any one of these punishments until you made your unhappy feelings go away. How long do you think you would continue to hold on to them? Chances are you would take control rather quickly. So the issue is not whether you can take control of your feelings, but whether you will."

awesome post!! You create your own experience and, always, are able to choose the view from which you see that experience. The past is just an idea, the future is too. What we have is the "present" and we alone choose how we want to live in it. It's not always easy, but I try to approach everything with an open mind and heart. In this way even the most mundane and menial tasks can be completed in perfect bliss. I catch my mind snapping to the negative so often and have to reel it back in and ask, "why did I think that?" I've found that my attitude is usually based on past experiences and expectations of future events. Catching my mind running away with my emotions is the best way I've found to center myself in the now.

I had put this quote in a newsletter I send out on a regular basis through Network 2012 www.network2012.net The most important aspect of understanding this quote for me is in understanding your personal power. If you realise the full potential of your attitude all excuses fall away. This is my life and I determine what I create while I'm here!

Mother of two minor sons need your help. I was laid off from my job and although have recently found work, garnishments for past due bills are leaving us without any living expenses or food for our stomachs and soon to be homeless. We are behind on our rent, electric, gas, water, medical, ext. I was also just released from the hospital for chest pains and dehydration.
Please help me and my family. I have used every resource available out here and have been turned away. My mother has cancer and as I mentioned I have been sick as well. Please help us get to a point of a decent life. I know in my heart that there are still good hearted and caring people out there. I pray that I have reached them here. Please help us from being homeless. Thank you

Hello, my name is BJ Stasio. I would like to marry my girlfriend, but it would mean that i would lose all my medical coverage. Now the only reason this affects me is that i have cerebral palsy. The government is threatening to take away my benefits if i was to get married, which would put all my expenses on my girlfriend. My expenses are too much for her to handle, and i would not want to put that kind of burden on her. So please sign the petition and help me make my dream come true. Thank you for your time, you are greatly appreciated.

Charles,

You are so incredibly 'right-on'. In my own life, I have been a unwed teen mother, in an abusive marriage, endured death of loved ones, etc. - not much different than other people. But one thing that allowed me to move on and live the life of my dreams was attitude. An average person, I now live in my dream cabin in the mountains (I do mean a cabin - not one of those mansions that get used 2 weeks out of the year), I do work that serves people, I volunteer many hours a month - doing exactly what I have always wanted, I have two healthy, happy, successful married adult children, the man of my dreams for a husband (the last 12 1/2 years). I have taught college classes, although I never completed by one year of college, have gotten to work in environments and jobs that I dreamed of from childhood (even without the education), and basically have the life of my dreams that I can't imagine a thing I would change. All of this has come from always having a positive attitude, believing that I could make a difference for myself, others and the world, always understanding that while bad things happen in our lives and the world, they don't rule me.

Thank you for your blog. I wish everyone who reads this the gift of positive attitude - be what you want to be and live your dreams.

Lorrie

It's funny because I can relate to one particular section: 'We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way' - I was just having a conversation the other day w/some family & friends saying, "You can't change other people; all you can do is work on yourself and adapt to situations"...sometimes we have to be chameleons in life to adapt to our environment & survive. Good motivational thought for the day!

I had a teacher in grade nine who had found a theory which was the same as yours. He printed it off and gave it to us and we had a discussion on how life is 90% attitude and only 10% experience. Since then I have kept that same sheet of paper as a reminder that my attitude and outlook will have a profound difference. It's good to know other people see things in the same light! Kudos

Attitude, though important, can't conjure up education, money, better circumstances or success. Many people with poor attitudes have these. Of course attitude goes some ways toward the directions our lives take, but it needn't be over-emphasized merely because it's the only thing we can control.

Before I never would have really agreed to this - but I also had a negative attitude. Maybe it was my time to "get it" or maybe it was proven to me. Either way, it is true. I also strongly agree that we need to realize our levels of consciousness and change them. I suggest everyone read "A New Earth" by Eckart Tolle. Strongly strongly advise. I am always skeptical with things, and this has all hit me hard. We really do have the power. We need to take it to the next level. Read the book!!

I like your post Bryan. It reminds me of a statement I kept on the top of my chalkboard in the MS where I worked for 9 years near the end of my time to teach. "You are the only one who can be responsible for you, and the training wheels are off now." I really miss teaching art, but I don't miss the manipulating negativity in the administrations I had to work for. The kids were a riot.Even the Moms & Dads were mostly cool. Why Adm. tinkers with people's lives I'll never know, don't want to know. I wish I could teach but I'm pretty much burned out for now.

Wonderful perspective Bryan! I totally agree... if everyone had a better attitude life would be a more pleasant experience.

The general public need to know what is actually going on "out there" in the monetary system - most people seem to have no idea, and I would expect that you would feel a sense of responsibility to educate the public about the true foundational causes of this "global financial crisis."

I wish to direct your attention to some very important information, which covers the true root causes of our socio-economic problems while offering a sane solution.

Please take time, when you can, to read this Orientation Guide (http://www.thezeitgeistmovement.com/The%20Zeitgeist%20Movement.pdf) or alternatively view it in Video Format (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3932487043163636261).

They are both from a global social organisation called "The Zeitgeist Movement" which currently has over 250,000 members, and will have surpassed (according to our current growth rate) 1 million by 2010. On March 15th we held over 450 events, and this was the official beginning day for our movement, many of these events were hosted in Australia. The main event was in NYC, if you'd like to know about that event please see the New York Times review: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/17/nyregion/17zeitgeist.html

For additional information, please visit our website (http://thezeitgeistmovement.com) and view the viral internet documentary "Zeitgeist: Addendum" which covers these issues further, but in a more aesthetically pleasing style than the other video presentation. It is this documentary which has had millions of views and is responsible for educating growing numbers of people about these issues.

We look forward to having you join us.

As a Healer in this journey we call Life, I have found that we must let go of past anger and past hurts and resentments. If we keep this in we generate so much sadness in our selves. We are not victims. We are the choosers of our future and our destiny on this planet.
Do I believe that things will get better. Yes. Do I think this planet will survive the future. Yes
There is "nothing to fear but fear itself. "
Much Love,
Trisha

Just new to Care2 and my comments and views on joining were almost the same. Yes it all starts with attitude because without this nothing changes. It is the foundation of which change begins to occur. Decide to-day to fix your own attitude and maybe you will start a ripple of change throughout the world, where all can live in peace and harmony together. Choose every day to be selfless, and observe the difference in your own life. Miracles do happen! You are a twinkling star! believe and achieve. Decide to smile and say thank you more often. Decide to express gratitude more often, even for the smallest of things. Say thank you for the sun the moon and the beautiful Planet. Decide to be more joyful. Decide to express love and kindness. Decide to pass this message on! We all all unique in our own way. Have faith and live with love. I wish you all things you need to live a happy peaceful life with love and harmony. Take care

The Nobel Peace Prize should be awarded for a person's contribution towards life. It is unfortunate that Obama received this prize, as he is responsible for taking away lives via his abortion policies.
