Our backyard FEELS like Iraq's front line............

I was just 12 when I had my first run in with hunters!  I had stepped outside the cottage we owned in the Eastern Townships one autumn day to take a stroll in the surrounding woods on our property, as I did daily at that time, only to hear the 'crack' of what I later was to find out was gun fire!! Before I knew what had happened I was on the ground!! Seems the Hunter mistook me for a deer or something and luckily only caught the back of my knee!! It had all happened soo quickly!! Suffice to say I'm not a Big Fan of Hunting OR Hunters!!

2 years ago I found and purchased our current home!  I was tired of the noise, the oppression, and the encroaching developments of Urban life!! I chose a space in the heart of the country, surrounded by agriculture and preserved wetlands, ensuring our ' peace & space' from bullying enterprise!!

Last fall was our first 'hunting' season! And after litterally tripping over a camouflaged hunter while taking my morning walk with my dog, I made it a concern to stop this madness by speaking to the owner of that property! He agreed that it was unnecessary and he would let the people know they would not be allowed to hunt in there again, being too close to MY home!! The municiple law states that a gun cannot be fired within 150 metres of a residence (which is 487.5 ft) this man was a mere 250 ft away from my front door!

In agreement with the owner of the land (athough he refuses to sell us the property), I purchased 'no hunting' signs that were to be posted before this falls hunting season began!  To my dismay, instead of the signs I provided, there were signs warning PEOPLE to beware of the Hunters!! As duck season started in September and I'm very close to our Major River here, the sounds of gun fire started 1/2 hour prior to sunrise and finished at around sunset!  It's a non stop barrage! And EXTREMELY nerve wracking!! It give's nightmares of war and violence that were unsettling and distubing! Playing havoc with our 'calm' 'serene' way of life!

3 weeks ago, the hunter I'd stumbled over last fall, stopped by to 'warn' me that they'd be hunting in the woods for the next 2 weeks as it was now big game/deer season!! This is also the time our backyard friends (see pic ;o) disappear for at least a month or so!! I must say though, that THIS year seems much worse than that of last years!! The gun shots are heard intermitently during any given day!! The last day was supposed to be Nov. 26th yet shots were still heard up to yesterday the 29th!!  

I realize now that I've put myself in a place that seemingly is one of the last areas where wild game is abundant, compared to other northern areas accross Canada!  The 'destruction' of development to the north has forced most of the wild life to these more densely wooded areas in the south and as a result, have created a rural 'hunting' zone too close to villages, towns and farms! I also realize that my ideals and 'choices' are not that of ALL, BUT... I refuse to stand by and allow others to dicate my ' peace of mind'!!!!!  That... and there is afterall, some sort of grocery store every 10 km or so if not closer so.. I don't see the NEED to hunt!! I feel its an archaic practice that should have been outlawed eons ago!!! The government's excuse to allow this is for ' population' control!!! With the world growing at the present pace it is, and with the population of humans increasing daily.... I wonder... will the government someday decide that People Hunting is viable for ' population' control?? and how will they choose who can be killed?? hmmmm... thought provoking!!

The long and short of it all is, after speaking with the people and meeting with the mayor and learning what I COULD do, I've made much progress in my research and I'm confident in standing before the Council this coming Tuesday evening and speaking out against Rural Hunting!!! Although I am worried of reprecussions as it's scary business going against what the Quebec Government refers to as a 'Religion' in Quebec!! but SOME one has to do it.. my nerves are stretched very thin after the past 8 weeks of 'waking with gunshots' and being made to feel like we're ON Iraq's front lines!! Well I say Be Damned with their Religion!!! This is our HOME!!! and I firmly believe we SHOULD have more rights for our peace, security and sense of well being!!

I've survived many things in this life, being shot, cancer, crippling car accidents, rape and physical/emotional abuse... I've stood up and said NO to it all... This scares me alot cuz it could also put in harms way my kids.. Well... it IS for them I'm doing all this so.. I'll put this in the hands of GOD and it will all work out as it should!!
