It’s December, and that means Florida manatees are on the move. This time of year, these gentle “sea cows” seek warm-water sites to spend the winter. That means boaters must be on the lookout for manatees and obey changing speed zones on waterways. The slow-moving mammals generally start traveling to warm water when the air temperature drops below 50 degrees or when the water temperature dips to 68 degrees. Seasonal speed zone signs were changed in mid-November on many waterways to accommodate manatee migration.
Alaska’s Bristol Bay is home to endangered Northern Pacific right whales, threatened Steller sea lions and the world’s largest sockeye salmon run. But President Bush has a different vision for this precious piece of the Pacific: he wants to turn it over to profit-rich Big Oil, lifting a moratorium that has been in place since the disastrous Exxon Valdez spill.
Take Action now! Tell President Bush not to let Big Oil into the Bristol Bay!
S.O.S (Save Our Shores!) After tens of thousands of activists like you called and wrote to their U.S. Representatives, drilling proponents scrapped a vote earlier this week to increase harmful oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. But Big Oil’s allies are not giving in. They’ve now scheduled another offshore drilling vote that could happen as early as tomorrow. Take action now -- Call your Representatives today to save Gulf Coast sea turtles, whales, dolphins and other wildlife from this disastrous drilling plan.
Courting Alaska Defenders is working hard to prevent another brutal season of aerial gunning in Alaska. We’ve asked the State Superior Court to block current permit holders from taking to the skies until our lawsuit challenging aerial gunning -- filed in August -- is heard by a judge. >> Read more
Thousands Do 'Right' Thing Two weeks ago, we asked you to take action for the North Atlantic right whale -- the most endangered of the great whales -- and over 42,000 of you spoke up. With the opening day of lobster season looming, several of the rare whales stayed in their summer feeding grounds longer than normal in the Bay of Fundy, risking fatal entanglement in fishing gear. Fortunately, the whales have now left the Bay. So far, there are no signs of fatalities.

Senator Lincoln Chafee isn’t your run-of-the-mill politician. He’s one of a very few in Congress to put conservation issues above partisan politics, standing up for his principles and doing what’s right for our wildlife and the places it lives. Recognizing his strong record in conservation, our sister organization, Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, endorsed Sen. Chafee in his tough re-election campaign and named him a 2006 Defenders Action Fund Wildlife Hero -- one of only four Senators (of any party) to earn the honor.
Senator Chafee heads home this month after a hard-fought election in which he was defeated. We thank him for his heroic stances on conservation issues and his distinguished career protecting our precious wildlife and wild places.
Polar Bear Polar bears spend so much time in the ocean -- and on sea ice -- that they’re considered marine mammals. Their webbed feet and water-repellent fur makes them well-suited for their life at sea. But global warming is threatening these iconic white bears of the north. With warmer sea temperatures, polar bears must swim longer distances to find adequate sea ice for hunting -- some even drowning in their quest.
A decision on improving protections for polar bears is expected later this month, but you can help Defenders protect these and other creatures today. Adopt a polar bear and your adoption fee will help us fight global warming and other threats that polar bears face.
Last month, nearly one third of you said that Congress’s top global warming priority in the next six months should be to encourage investments in clean alternatives to fossil fuels.
This month's question: Which animal reminds you most of the Holiday Season?
