Case profile:
Case Report: Shon adopted a cat from Citizens for Humane Action (C.H.A.) on January 26, 1999.

In the early morning hours of February 6, Shon beat the cat, poked out its eye, broke its jaw legs, and left it bloody and in agony in a laundry basket in his apartment. He asked Melissa to come over and get it and take it to Delaware County Humane Society and tell them she found it along the road. She instead took it to Columbus Veterinary Emergency Service (CVE who humanely euthanized it due to the extensive nature of its injuries.

Shon Rahrig, about 30 years old, of Sandbury Blvd, allegedly adopted 6 or 7 cats and a puppy from various local shelters and allegedly abused them horribly, broke their limbs, put their eyes out, etc. The alleged abuse became known when his girlfriend took one of the victims to a vet to be euthanized. In court he "copped a plea" to avoid the nasty publicity of a jury trial, and confessed to torturing one black and white cat, Misty, adopted from Citizens for Humane Action. Under the current statutes the most severe penalty for this man, if convicted, would be 90 days in jail and/or a fine of $750.

Melissa contacted C.H.A. and advised them what had happened. C.H.A. transported the body from CVES to Capital Area Humane Society and filed an abuse report. Shon was subsequently arraigned and charged with one count of animal abuse. Shon at first plead not guilty, but changed his plea to guilty. On September 29,1999, Judge Pfeiffer sentenced Shon to 90 days in jail (of which 45 were suspended), 5 years probation, mandatory counseling and he was forbidden from owning any living thing during the 5 year probation period. He began serving his sentence on November 1.

12/28/2002 PETA's cruelty investigation team reports Shon Rahrig as now living in Fort Myers, Florida area.

On 7/23/2002: As of this date Rahrig was in the San Diego area, where he has a real estate license.

On 4/17/2002: This man was reported as living in Southern California and Los Angeles area has been trying to adopt animals from numerous shelters.

There is a warning going around about a man trying to adopt from local groups and who may be trying to arrange private adoptions, who has been convicted of multiple torture/killing of cats and puppies that he has adopted. He is now in the Fort Myers Area in Florida.

SHON RAHRIG was convicted in Ohio of torturing animals he adopted from animal shelters. He has been spotted in California and now Florida and has tired to adopt from several agencies; his parole states that he cannot acquire an animal for 5 years. He may try private adoptions by advertisement. If you encounter him, please alert the DA and the Probation Department.

On 4/29 /2002: He was reported to have moved to Long Beach, CA area where he was spotted at an adoption event.

Outcome

Shon Rahrig's sentencing was well attended with representatives from CAHS, CHA, PET FBI, POET, COPA and some individuals. Channel 6 camera crew
was there, the other stations were covering a school bus disaster. Rahrig did his best to look normal and innocuous, wore a jacket and tie, remained impervious to the glares of the people in attendance and leafed casually through an agenda. ( He will need to block out all of November.)

After having plead guilty to one count he tried to say "it was a lie" but Kerri Manion presented the CAHS cruelty investigation team's findings which was difficult to listen to. The unfortunate cat really suffered. To get to the point: sentence was 45 days in jail, out of a maximum 90, the last 15 may be converted to work-release, by which he is free to leave during day but has to go back to jail to sleep and he has to pay for his incarceration.

He has to reimburse CAHS $100 for the necropsy of the poor victim. No counseling was mandated but remains at discretion of his probation officer. Probation is 5 years during which he may not own any living thing and he is subject to check-up visits by CAHS.

Judge Pfeiffer did his best, we think, to make him understand that he had committed a wanton act of cruelty against a defenseless animal and that nothing in his psychological study indicated a mental problem. "I am not crazy" said Shon. Mary Poliseno, President of CAHS, said she was concerned about what would happen if he moved outside the Franklin County jurisdiction and the Judge said he would extend his sentence to all of Central Ohio.

There will probably be some protest demonstration soon to draw more attention to the case and to the sorry state of our animal protection laws here in Ohio, the Heart of it all.

This disgusting piece of you-know-what placed an ad on Craigslist today looking for more animals to abuse! His name is Shon Rahrig. If you go to PetAbuse.com, you can read his history and even see his mug shot. He's been arrested before. I can't believe he is still trying to get ahold of pets to torture! Here is the warning, and at the bottom is his innocent-sounding ad from Craigslist today:

There is a man on the run now, Shon Rahrig, that is around the Florida/Georgia area. He purposely answers/posts ads looking for free/cheap animals to abuse/mutilate. FYI - He is NOT last known to be in Florida. As our our last update on Pet-Abuse.Com:

In Sept. 2002, Rahrig moved into 23560 Walden Center Dr, Apt 103, Bonita Springs FL. In October 2002, Animal Control Officers paid him a "welcome to the neighborhood visit" letting him know they were aware of the Ohio case. Late Nov/early Dec 2002, Rahrig moved out of the apartment leaving all of his furniture and personal belongs in it. The manager of the complex said he moved to California but did not know the city. On January 24, 2006, Animal Control Officers confirmed this information with a visit to the place he last lived and spoke with the managers.

We have had unconfirmed reports of CA and GA, but he does not live in Florida anymore.

I do not understand how this sick monster is still walking around in society! So he now resides in California? And he is posting ads such as the one above, asking for a puppy for his daughter? Someone is going to fall for this and give the a-hole a puppy to torture!

Is there a better way to "spread the word" on Craig's List about this twisted f.ck? People should not be allowed to give animals away for free, but I guess that's bound to happen.

I am very disburbed by this whole case.

I suggest that everyone write all of their legislators and ask that something be done to post notices of offenders like this at all pet stores and adoption sites....maybe a requirement that a list be kept by all adoption groups?etc...also I wrote the CA real estate board and asked for his licence to be revoked and for a warning about him be forwarded to all realtors and offices. I also wrote to petco and petsmart and asked that a warning be posted in all their stores (they do adoptions). How about someone starting a petition to make this man known and limit his abilities to do further damage. Any legal eagles have advice? Donation Defamation
The defamation campaign against Shon Rahrig initiated through collating false information, having an email message perpetuate animal groups around the country and posting over and over the same message 800-1000 times, sometimes phrased slightly differently on many sites with links back to the site where a person could donate money for the cause. A campaign of lies then started and each time they were generated they became a little more horrendous. The first lie originated when it was posted on a site that Shon Rahrig had tried to adopt another pet through a Pets Mart on Sawmill Rd. in Columbus. Of course he wasn’t even in town at the time or anywhere near a Pets Mart. (Later we found proof that Mary Poliseno was involved with her organization at this location) His probation department was called with a person trying to perpetuate a lie in which at the time they called Shon Rahrig to investigate. Shon Rahrig was in California at the time and had been there for some time. The lies would continue to grow and eventually several groups signed on to Mary’s campaign and perpetuated further lies around the Internet. The truth was not enough to get donations, so they lied and deceived people. These new sites would contain donation links in which the site promoted people giving money for its cause. This is why the lies were started, so that un-knowing grandmothers and animal lovers would take money out of their pockets to support these individuals’ expenses under the cover of non-profit organizations.

Someone in jail needs to poke out his eyes and break his jaw and legs. Poor little kitties, this is just heart breaking to know that these poor little innocent cats that were being adopted thought this evil man would love them and take care of them. I'm as compassionate towards animals as anyone, more so than most... and yet this story reeks of set-up. You people should be ashamed of yourselves! In this United States, where a man is innocent unless proven guilty, you have taken sheer heresay and already decided his guilt, and are now staging his punishment. If they DID give you an address, one of you would very likely have taken matters into your own hands... and there is a good deal of reason to think, when considered objectively, that at least some of this is fabricated.

Let's leave judgment to the court (which can gather, qualify and consider ALL evidence,) and lay off the vigilante routine.

My family is dog owners and we love our animals like they where our children and it just comlpetly sickin me to know that there is some sick monster out there that is doing this to a defenceless animal. That ranks right up there with child abuse and what he got for his crime is not even anywhere in the area of what he should have gotten. I believe in capital punishment for the abuse of children and adults and it should be the same for our 4 legged friends that depend on us no differently than a small child would this just sickin me to no end

I am a dog lover, and could not be more horrified by the actions of animal abusers. I would NEVER let someone get away with animal cruelty if I knew it was going on. HOWEVER, this story leads me to wonder something: IF it is true that this man has outstanding warrants for his arrest, as it says he does, AND the author of this lengthy post has his address/phone numbers/info about his current whereabouts (as they claim to)--AND has proof that he is trying to break the conditions of his probation by obtaining more pets, WHY DID THE AUTHOR NOT JUST CONTACT THE POLICE OR ANIMAL CONTROL? As animal lovers, we all know that if we have information that someone is abusing animals, we need to call the authorities! And if this man actually has a history--and outstanding warrant for--animal cruelty, the police and/or animal control would take that especially seriously. I am doubtful that this is accurate. (I also noticed that the story contradicts itself in several places--for example, in one place it says that he pled guilty to abusing the cat, and in court was sentenced to 45 days in jail and 5 years probation, etc...and then later on it says that he didn't show up in court for sentencing and is on the run...???) How do we know he has done this again? I didn't see any sign that the Craig's List post at the end of the story was in any way related to him--how did the author know it WAS him? And if it was posted in 2006, and his crime occurred in 1999, is he REALLY breaking the terms of his probation, which was (allegedly) 5 years?? If this report is NOT accurate, and instead is just a smear campaign, it seems to me that this man might have a case for libel and/or defamation of character, since so many identifying details about him have been printed--including the last 4 digits of his SSN! I would be cautious about spreading this around without thoroughly verifying the charges first.
Again let me say--I am an animal lover, and would NEVER look the other way on animal cruelty. But I also care about HUMAN rights, honesty, and respect for each other. If someone knows that this guy is breaking the law, CALL THE COPS. If not, don't spread malicious rumors.
