It looks like animal testing will continue for the time being, according to a UPI story by Shaun Waterman, which I've excerpted here:

"NYSE defies animal extremists

By SHAUN WATERMAN
UPI Homeland and National Security Editor

WASHINGTON, Dec. 29, 2006 (UPI) -- The decision by the New York Stock Exchange to list a medical research company targeted by animal rights protestors on a new electronic market where shares can be traded anonymously is being hailed as a victory by animal researchers.

Life Sciences Research, Inc., a Princeton, N.J.-based medical research firm that specializes in animal experiments announced just before Christmas that it had settled a dispute with the NYSE, and would be listed on the exchange's new all-electronic trading platform called Arca.

"We're thrilled," the company's Chief Financial Officer Richard Michaelson told United Press International. "It is a totally anonymous trading environment," he said of the new electronic exchange. "In our situation that is a big advantage."

Life Sciences Research, Inc., is the parent of U.K.-based Huntingdon Life Sciences, and has been targeted on both sides of the Atlantic by animal rights activists organized under the name Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, or SHAC..."

However, 'business' for Life Sciences Research, Inc. could turn very, sour very fast... and millions of frightened, defenseless, innocent animals currently slated for repeated, often excruciatingly painfull procedures, violent treatment, and hopeless lonely deaths could suddenly be free... if The Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research, and other animal and consumer protection groups have anything to say about it!!!

AND ALL OF YOU CAN HELP... NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE!

"The European legislation governing EU animal experiments (Directive 86/609/EEC), is now some 20 years old, desperately out of date and in urgent need of review. The European Commission has recognised this and a review is now underway. The Commission has also launched an 'Action Plan' that explicitly states "The final aim is to replace animal experiments with methods not entailing the use of an animal."

The revision of Directive 86/609/EEC provides an unprecedented opportunity for the European Union to increase efforts to replace all animal experiments through carefully targeted and co-ordinated research to develop, valid
ate and implement non-animal methods. This could save millions of laboratory animals and improve the quality of research and testing."

It will happen in the EU. It will happen everywhere!

There is absolutely no reason to be doing this type of craziness to these poor innocent animals. Humans and animals are not even alike when it comes to our bodies, animals and humans react totally different to all things! So how can they test chemicals and or medications and really expect to make progress??? Reactions to meds on animals may not even be safe for humans. There have been studies and reports proving this. Some humans have even come close if not actually died because of certains meds that were safe for animals but were actually not safe for human consumptiom. Why not do studies on human tissue instead, they are hiding things and for some reason I think it involves alot of corruption as well as money. Sad is'nt it that society has humans in it that are so greedy.

Man, we are told, was made in the image of God. Man has extended his own longevity, discovered nuclear energy, landed on the moon and developed technology beyond the point of being able to control it. It would seem that the price for all these amazing achievements is a fatal loss of balance between the head and the heart. There is no more powerful or destructive negative energy in the Universe than that of man’s delusional, over inflated egotistical concept of self value and self importance. We have convinced ourselves, that human beings are the chosen, the precious living creatures, over and above any known or imagined living beings in the great “ all that is “. We have even invented religions and gods which confirm and support this hypothesis. Our uniquely specialized brain and superior intellect, apparently places us in a position of dominion over all we survey. We even have Holly scripture which say so. If this be true, we have thoughtlessly, disgracefully and to our own detriment, disrespected and defiled our stewardship of this miraculous gift by acting like ignorant, selfish, totally spoiled children. Man rules, divides, conquers, tortures, kills, uses and abuses his environment and all life within it, according to his whims, with an arrogant sense of entitlement clad in a false sense of impunity. In our insatiable lust for and greed for power and profit, we have chosen to forget or ignore the fact, that all sentient beings which shape our existence on this planet live, feel, yearn for and deserve the same quality of life that we ourselves so relentlessly and selfishly strive for even at the expense of others. Human beings dispense pain, agony, misery and destruction, without any feeling or thought beyond that of self justification and personal exoneration. We treat Nature and the creatures within it as inanimate objects to be sliced, diced, packed, labeled and used as nothing more than a commodity for our needs, pleasure and comfort. We chain a dog to the wall of a gallery just to watch it starve to death and call it art. We watch a woman stab and stomp to death a tiny kitten, with the stiletto heel of her shoe and we call it performance art. We skin cats alive because this allegedly makes their skin and fur better and we call ourselves fashion designers. We torture dogs before we kill and eat them, because some idiot got the idea that the toxins in adrenalin released during their suffering somehow makes their meat sweeter and tender. We cut the fins off sharks, creatures which have preceded our arrival on this planet by millions of years, throw them back into the water to helplessly drown but we take extreme pride in our short lived existence and puny five thousand year old cultures and traditions. We condone and take part in so many atrocities against life it’s self, including our fellow human beings, that it is not possible to list them all here. We pollute our air, poison our water and land, brainlessly chop down our trees, the very lungs of our planet, neglect our pets and fish and hunt our precious wildlife into extinction, without ever facing the fact that what we do to them we are actually doing to ourselves. When we homo sapiens deliberately hurt, injure or kill other living beings for sustenance, greed or entertainment, well, that’s all right after all, we are human, and we are entitled. However, just let a bear, a lion, a tiger, a mountain lion, a wolf, a shark, or any other animal take one of us or our property out of fear or hunger according to their instincts, we find the old adage “ sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you “ hard to swallow. There is no end to lamentation and whining. The animal must be immediately vilified, seen as a bloodthirsty monster and destroyed as soon as possible. Human beings, so precious, so special, so sensitive. But do we really feel? Human beings, so smart, so intellectual? But do we really think? Because if we did, we would have to ask ourselves; who the hell do we think we are?

Please - you have the power to do good or evil. Please choose to do good and stop this senseless cruelty. You'll sleep better at night.

I'm sorry - I thought my comment was going on the petition, not here. Anyway - Sugar Bouche said it all! I couldn't add anything to what she said.
