Name:Too all the men lost in the West Virgina Mines January 2006 + ...
Type:Memorial (for the deceased)
To Honor:Individual(s)
Location:, United States

A personal tribute to my brother-in-law (Johnny Lipford) who died in the mines in Harlan Kentucky in 1984.

In Loving Memory Of
John Joseph Quann Jr.
1922 - 1996

and all miners who lost their lives
to support their families in the mines.

Recorded in Jan 1999 by Riverbend

1

people wonder why;

So many miners had to die.
Men who worked and learned to pray;
That they would again see the light of day.

11

Bright white lamps illume their way,
So far removed from light of day.
One hundred tests they face each week,
Down in the mines the coal to seek.

111

Trained to live beneath the soil,
In dark and damp they had to toil.
To wrest the minerals from the land,
By strength of mind and back of hand.

1V

Courage is a must they say,
To work as miners day by day.
So far removed from child and wife;
And face the rigors of a miners life.

V

Now high above in the light of sun.
A child at play enjoys his fun.
Fun at times concealing fear,
That the mines will claim his dad so dear.

V1

And as they work beneath the clay,
With heads bowed down these miners pray,
That God will hear them up above
And send them safely to the ones they love.

V11

Now if this cannot come to pass,
And he must pay the price at last.
The miner leaves his last demand
Keep my child safe above the land.

Thanks for posting the tribute, Barb. My heart goes out to all the families of those men. It's such a terrible tragedy.

...ol' King Coal sure is a heartless ogre.

And Rozlen, you make sure you hug your brother every time you see him.

Actually I feel as though they should have stopped the celebration... I also feel as though the Governor should have stopped it at the church before he left... he knew the story had not been confirmed, he was there, he was the only public official there, he was also wrong... It really isn't a time to judge... It is a time to show support for these families. I live in coal mining country, my husband our friends, our community in one way or another all work, live and survive, around the coal mines... These companies have come along way...without them many of these people and communities would not exist. Yes it is sad, it is tragic what has happened... but none of it was malicously done... We are all human, mistakes are made. We must find forgiveness in our hearts to move on and help those that are left behind!

I join you in your Tribute to Coal Miners. My loving cousin died in a rock fall in a gold mine in Western Australia. I was devistated and still miss him even though it was at least 20 years ago. His name was Walter Plunkett.My thoughts go out to all relatives left behind in these horrible cercumstances.

These were real men, and real families that are hurting, and may they be in my thoughts and prayers too.
