Dear Friend of the Orangutans,

Our letter to ASEAN-WEN earlier this week motivated them into sending me a long letter full of excuses....and that’s all they were. I replied, pointing out the errors of their ways.

12 wild-caught, illegally trafficked orangutans, two years incarcerated in cages just two and a half hours from their office. There can be no excuses. Based on my experience in 2006, if we did not try to help the orangutans, they would abused in the way you see in the article at this link. These orangutans once lived in the forests
in the forests of Indonesia. Read more:

Contrary to what you read in this article, only two organisations helped get 48 orangutans repatriated to Indonesia: Nature Alert and Orangutan Appeal UK.

Then, like now, BOSF did not want to accept them back in Indonesia and only under extreme pressure did they finally relent. I know this, because it was me pressuring them into action.

During the last six months, behind the scenes, I have been trying repeatedly (dozens of emails) to persuade the Chief Executive of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) to make a public statement in favour of repatriating these 12 orangutans. Recently I even sent him a draft plan of how to go about helping the orangutans (should I have to do this?) and how even a partially competent fundraiser could hardly fail to raise a lot of sponsorship and donations to help with the costs.

Despite knowing their fate they have left these orangutans to suffer in Thailand, despite six months of pleas from me, despite telling BOSF how to plan and fund a repatriation, like ASEAN-WEN, BOSF do nothing but make excuses.

All BOSF want before moving a finger to help, is money. You will probably recall how, not long ago, only after naming and shaming BOSF in public, whilst they were in that nearby luxury hotel for four days, did they eventually collect those three baby orangutans. If it was not for us, the babies would still be in those awful cages.

BOSF can find lots of (your?) money to plan, fly in and accommodate people at a four day conference, but not to fly in 12 orangutans and accommodate them at their rescue centre. How does that make you feel? Goodness knows how many BOSF management there are, but one thing is for sure, they are paid to care for orangutans, so why should I, a volunteer, always have to be embarrassing them into doing what people expect them to do, and not make up excuses why they won’t help orangutans? To my mind, someone who has known BOSF for 15 or more years, their current attitude to these 12 orangutans is reprehensible and unforgivable; that’s how I feel.

To my mind there are four organisations who need to know we find their attitude to these 12 orangutans totally unacceptable.
Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF), CITES, ASEAN-WEN and the Ministry of Forestry in Indonesia. Which is why
I would like to ask if you will please send the brief message and newspaper article below to the email addresses provided? Bear in mind this is almost a carbon copy of what it took in 2006 to save 48 orangutans.

Thank you yet again for caring enough to help. It is wonderful to know the orangutans can count on you.

Sean and the Orangutans

P.S. If you don’t send the letter and news report, you will know you are condoning what you see in the news report below.
If not you, who? If not now, when?

Every individual’s efforts count, and we can make a difference, every day, in whatever ways we choose to help.

please send, keeping the same subject line as above, to:; and copy to:;;;;;;;;; citesthailand@YAHOO.COM;;;;;;;;

If any emails are rejected, please try again and until they do go through successfully. Some in-boxes may temporarily fill up!
Please feel free to add your name to the letter – it always helps but is not essential.

All you need do is to cut or copy and paste what follows into a normal email and send to the addresses above – please.

Dr. Togu Manurung, Chief Executive, Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF)
John Scanlon, Secretary General, CITES
Mr. Zulkifli Hasan, Minister of Forestry, Indonesia
Manop Lauprasert, Senior Officer, ASEAN Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN)

Concerning the 12 orangutans you have all, shamefully, abandoned for almost two years in Thailand.

I wish you to see the future the 12 orangutans face. You need only to look at the newspaper article below. The newspaper calls it barbaric – how does it feel to know you are trying to leave these orangutans to suffer the same fate?

Make no mistake. Along with thousands of others, I will never stop writing and shaming you, until I hear all 12 orangutans are safe and well in an orangutan rescue/rehabilitation centre in Indonesia.
The choice is yours. At the moment you are part of the problem. All it will take to become part of the solution is the will to help these orangutans and some paperwork; job done.
I will be here for as long as it takes to persuade you to repatriate the orangutans.

Arranging for the 12 orangutans to be transported on a flight to Indonesia is hardly a monumental challenge is it now? 48 orangutans travelled this route in 2006 didn’t they?

It is not only ethical but enjoyable to make animal’s lives better.

Yours sincerely,
A Friend if the Orangutans
