Dear Friend of the Orangutans,

I am unable to go into detail in public, but let’s just say I have good reason to think this new reminder to all concerned is necessary.

Please could you send the letter below the line to these email addresses?

Many thanks.
Sean

Dear Prime Minister,

I thought you might like to see this letter which has been submitted by Nature Alert to the Malaysian media.

Until your officials enforce the wildlife protection law more diligently, I have no desire to visit Malaysia.

We may have control and domain over other animals, but this does not mean we have the right to exploit and dominate them.

Yours sincerely.

A Concerned Conservationist.

Ministry Blowing Smoke – again.

For all their fine words recently in the media the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) have done nothing to allay either public concern or perception.

For starters, both the NRE and Perhilitan have been ignoring four reports dating back to the start of the year, each one detailing blatant breaches of the current wildlife law at various zoos.

The appearance this gives is one of Perhilitan putting personal friendships with zoological owners and wildlife traders (the two are often inseparable) before law enforcement and the prevention of cruelty to animals, and this has been at the core of the problem with Perhilitan for as long as anyone can remember.

Perhilitan still won’t explain why, after seventeen long months they have not prosecuted the owner of Taiping Zoo, who they alleged at the time was caught red-handed with two illegally obtained orangutans. Conversely, it took Perhilitan all of three weeks to apprehend, prosecute and gaol Anson Wong. Apparently, this case is now in the hands of the Attorney General.

Making matters worse, the Taiping Zoo has recently had a Clouded Leopard confiscated by Perhilitan. It had been alleged the zoo took possession of the Leopard (a protected species) from none other than the premises of the infamous illegal wildlife trader Anson Wong whilst he was in gaol. Perhilitan’s report on this case, they claim, is also with the Attorney General.

There also remains a very large question mark over the remarks made in last January’s National Geographic magazine regarding corruption within Perhilitan. Perhilitan claim to have investigated themselves and found nothing untoward; hardly surprising, but we will never know the truth as they refuse to make public their report, if one exists. The anti-corruption agency (MACC), itself no stranger to criticism of favoritism, claims to have investigated Perhilitan and filed a report with the Attorney General, something rather strangely neither MACC or Perhilitan will now confirm.

So there we have it. NRE and Perhilitan want us to believe they have changed their spots, but no one believes them because despite their claims to the contrary, it appears to be ‘business’ as usual. They will be judged by what they do, not by what they say, and the way things are going it could take them years to win back public and NGO confidence.

In the meantime, all eyes are on Attorney General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail whilst we await his decision in the case(s) concerning Taiping Zoo. This will prove to be a good test of the new wildlife protection law much heralded by Perhilitan and NRE. The public and NGO’s are impatient for news.
