We've got an important Shine a Light action to share with you today, but first a quick update and a big thank you for participating on our last action:
In December, we asked you to Shine a Light on Ann P. and your response was overwhelming. Close to 1,000 people left messages of hope and encouragement for Ann as she continues to battle against cancer and overcome the challenges of M.S. Ann wanted to share this with all of you:
When Randy Paynter implemented his idea to "shine one glorious sunbeam of collective love" on an individual, he knew that a few simple words, when spoken or written with a full heart, can make all the difference in the world to the recipient. Imagine the effect when multiplied hundreds of times!
As the recipient of one such glorious sunbeam of collective love, I am deeply moved by the kind words and love flowing in my direction.
It is every bit as glorious to be part of the sunbeam as it is to receive it. Shine on!
Today's Shine a Light is a message of love and gratitude. Hugh MacDougall has been a member of Care2 for the past several years and a long-time protector of nature and the Earth. Hugh passed away on January 28th leaving behind two children -- Ellen and Peter -- and many friends.
Hugh was a lover of travel and finding "people-free" places to explore. He grew up in Scotland, lived for several years in Australia and spent time in China, New Zealand and many other countries. In addition to his poetry, his images from these trips will be a lasting memory of his life and what he enjoyed most.
Please take a moment to post a comment of gratitude for Hugh’s kind devotion to the Earth, and we will make sure that these messages are shared with his family. Hugh will be greatly missed by his family, friends -- especially those that shared his commitment to Good, and all those that had an opportunity to be touched by his passion for Nature. Your words can mean so much to them during this difficult time. Thank you.

Wednesday February 2, 2011, 4:15 am
I'm so sorry to have heard the news that Hugh had passed away. The man he was has left the world, and certainly all that knew him, at a higher level. My dad passed away this past August after a courageous battle against a very aggressive prostate cancer, and although I greatly miss his physical presence, I feel his spirit, or energy force - whatever you want to call it - with me constantly and I know in this sense, he lives on. I wish you both, Ellen and Peter, a similar experience.
Wednesday February 2, 2011, 4:19 am
So many people will continue the great work you did. Your dream will live on forever and continue to inspire people into action to help out planet.
Wednesday February 2, 2011, 4:34 am
Be strong, 'cause he's not passed away. He's still here, in the sky, in the grass, in the wind. Men like him never really die: just become part of the whole Nature. Feel him in the world itself; he will feel you too.
Wednesday February 2, 2011, 4:40 am
I didn't know Hugh, but as a person concerned about the environment, he deserves my respect. May he rest in peace and may his legacy live through his children.

Dear Ellen, Peter, other family and friends,
I hear your father was a kind, loving, nurturing man who spread his joy of living and love of the earth to many. I am sincerely sorry that he will no longer be here, a blessing in the flesh, for you and the rest of the world. Gone much too early. May your wonderful memories carry you through the dark days of grief and may you carry on his legacy. With love any sympathy, Linda Trzybinski

For your soul, The beginning of wisdom is the most sincere desire for instruction, and concern for instruction is love of her and love of her is the keeping of her laws and giving heed to her laws is assurance of immortality and immortality brings one nearer, to God so the desire for wisdom Leads to a Kingdom. Mother Earth.

From the little I know about Hugh, he was very much in touch and empathetic with the Earth, wanting the best that we can give it. The ancient ones shared Hugh's home, Scotland, perhaps they are present for him. To his family and loved ones, may the soft music of flowing streams, the solidarity and patience of grandfather trees, the richness of the earth, the murmuring of gentle breezes, and the wisdom and teachings of the standing stones be always present for you, helping and blessing you at this difficult time.....Love...........Anna

When we are placed in this beautiful place called Mother earth we can be fortunate when we meet special people who stimulate our senses and bring us closer to what really matters in this life. I have been blessed by one on one communications with Hugh and he was to be my editor for my book. I was wondering why recently I was not able to contact him. Maybe some of you did not know ~~ not only he was a spiritual man, very talented, but among his talents he also was an editor by profession.
There is a beautiful song called "Calling all Angels" written and performed by by Jane Siberry. This comes to mind not because Hugh has need, but for US who need to be comforted for our physical loss. To understand that Hugh has not left us. He is among us and while he will not edit my book, his spirit will inspire me to complete it so all of us will benefit from his soul and spirit!
We feel you Hugh while you are probably running with the "Roos" of the Outback in the spirit world.
Wednesday February 2, 2011, 8:47 am
I never met Hugh, but knew of his devotion to the Earth and all of its beauty and wonders. If everyone cared 1/10 as much as he did, this world would be a much better place.
All of us who fight to keep our Earth healthy and beautiful will miss his efforts. The planet will miss his efforts even more. God bless him, he goes with love.
Wednesday February 2, 2011, 8:53 am
The world has lost a most loving soul, but his deeds will last forever on this earth, my sympathy to all loved ones left behind...he will truly be missed by all.
Wednesday February 2, 2011, 8:53 am
this really says it all. from hughmacdougall.com about his blog:
"Thank you to those who have persisted and read it all. It is a personal journal that shows my foibles and follies and, I hope, some of my strengths too. It is personal because each of my good friends deserves to know me as I really am. If you are a new reader you might also be a friend one day."
Wednesday February 2, 2011, 8:55 am

and us of now. We are of always." Our lives and actions touch many more than those we may be aware of - and the ripples in the waters continue on.

Hugh (the "gentle giant") accomplished in his short life what all should strive to do. He left an indelible mark on each person privileged to meet him, leaving them a better person for it. Guileless and sensitive, introspective and in touch with himself and all that surrounded him . . . a truly remarkable person.

Wednesday February 2, 2011, 10:41 am
I visited Hugh's blog and read some of his poetry and prose.
One senses a kind heart, and a love of people and words.
I wondered what I might say, and then this quote was the Care2 quote for the day, and it seemed right:
"A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity."
--Buddha.
May you find comfort in your memories ...
Wednesday February 2, 2011, 10:42 am

Wednesday February 2, 2011, 10:43 am
Look for signs that your father is trying to comfort you - you will see these in birds that may start to visit your garden or butterflies, tingling feelings of love or just the feeling of his presence or smells and be assured that he was moved on with great love and he is happy. Read Angels in my hair by Lorna Byrne and it will give you great comfort. My sincere gratitude to your fathers dedicated life and we will continue to fight his corner. Deeply sorry for your loss but find comfort that you will be reuinted together again. Im sure his legecy will live on through your family and his followers xx

The world needs more People like Hugh,
and the seed grows in everyone who was inspired by his visit to this realm.
I am one of them now,
This is one of my poems that I would like to contribute here
Dream capsules
Our dreams are seed capsules
on the tree of life
which link us with it
deeply and creatively
This is an invitation
to open those capsules
let the dreams
touch each other
and bond
because reality
is made of dreams
may we share
the wealth
of wonderful dreams
that our life gives us
I thank the spirit of dreams
that lives in all of us

I never had the pleasure of meeting Hugh, but it sounds like he would have a thousand wonderful tales to tell of his life. I would have loved to hear them. He was obviously a good, compassionate man for how he cared about nature and the planet. The Earth will weep for the loss of this man.
Rest In Peace, Hugh. You lived a good life full of wonderful sights and experiences I'm sure.

Ellen and Peter,
I expect you miss your dad deeply. He must have offered you his insights, joys and concerns about our world. I imagine he shared many stories which of his travels and the people he met. May you keep those good memories and insights close.
I lost my father last year. I realize how much of himself he shared and gave to me and my sister. Parents are so very important. No matter how old they are, they leave this world too soon.
I hope the special memories of your father provide
comfort,strength and hope.

Although I did not know Hugh, his life story drew me to comment. Hugh seemed to be quite the man, who loved nature and all it's treasures. He seemed to walk gently on this earth, careful not to cause it any harm. We should all learn to do the same to the earth as well as Hugh did. His love of travel gave opportunity to learn more about this precious planet and the ability to share his knowledge and experience with other caring folks. Hugh sure was one special soul, who surely will be missed by all who's path he touched!! Hugh if only we could all be like you, what a world this would be! In a world filled with so much violence and hate, you my friend were a breath of fresh air. Thank you for touching us all with your caring heart and gentle spirit! To Hugh's family I am sorry for your loss of your loved one. He will always be remembered as a caring soul. To Ellen and Peter, always remember your Dad for the special man he was, I am sure you shared many of his passions and enjoyed many happy moments together. Remember he is always with you and lives forever in your hearts! God Bless!

I give a copy of this poem and the book "The Next Place" by Warren Hanson to all memorials.
The Dash
A Genealogical Poem by Linda Ellis
I read of a reverend who stood to speak
at the funeral of his friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning...to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth… and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own; the cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard… are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left. (You could be at "dash mid-range.")
If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s true and real, and always try to understand the way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile… remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy’s being read with your life’s actions to rehash... would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash?
