As a former associate of a Petco store in Southern CA, I often wonder if people realize the gravity of not only the, mistreatment of employees, but the tremendous animal abuse and neglect that went on within, at least, my store.

I took the job, inwardly morally objecting. I had heard from animal rights/liberation activists about the vast number of lawsuits the corporation had and their constant exploitation of animals. It wasn’t until, after almost an entire year of working as a cashier for the awful corporation, that I, perhaps, comprehend the entire severity of the abuse.

To start, the associates, who handle, feed, take care of, clean and are completely responsible for the animals in the store, have absolutely no efficient training in animal care. Unless, that is, you count watching videos and short review-quizzes as “efficient” There was always a dead animal to be found in the store.

Everywhere you looked, D.O.A’s, from DC shipping, an entirely different story, deaths dues to inbreeding, disease, unhealthy habitat; other animals would get into the cages over night and tear them apart. Maybe it could even be argued the animals just gave up hope. Then there was the “wellness room”. This is the quote-un-quote hospice for the sick and injured animals. In the store standards and policies it clearly states it is to be “hospital clean”: The room was not only dirty, it was harmful to humans, and I’m sure that is not far-fetched. Overstocked and returned animals with sick ones, expired medications (still being distributed); sick and injured feeder mice being sold to customers for snakes. The staff was required to take any sick or injured animal to the vet ASAP. This was quite a rarity, in the time I worked there. I even personally volunteered several times to clean the sordid place up. However, time is money, and it never was taking into consideration.

Don’t be deceived by the donation drives. Have you ever asked what percentage of the money is going to the local shelter and gotten a straight answer? That’s because, when Petco starts a donation drive, however much money they make goes to the almighty illusion of “The Petco Foundation”, in which, about $400 of it is split between two local shelter. Where does the rest of it go, you ask? Oh, well the rest of however much was raised goes to “The Petco Foundation.” The million dollar (no-pun intended) question is “What exactly is The Petco Foundation, and who exactly does that money go to?” If I was ever given an answer to that question myself, I would gladly share. I’m sure if you asked. Some propaganda about “healthier pets and happier people” and all that bull would be told to you, but in all reality I think it’s safe to assume who’s pocket‘s we’re lining here.

Towards the end of my so-called “career” at Petco in San Pedro, CA, I was frequently, meaning everyday I was scheduled, telling my customers “I’m sorry “I can’t sell you this ENTER CONSUMABLE PRODUCT NAME HERE because it’s been expired for a year.” I would pull every expired piece of food, can, treat, mediation, etc. of the floor I could, letting the GM know very well it was all over the store (along with the rat infestation) yet, nothing was ever done about it. It would, and probably has, taking quite sometime to go over everything wrong with this corporation.

I may seem bitter, but I am not. I'm disgusted at the amount of apathy these people have towards living beings.

After repeated communication to the district HR representative, I have been told that these are all “assumptions and accusations” and that I have “no proof” In reality, if proof is needed, just take a look at a Petco store. Look beyond the smiling managers, and some-what friendly associates. Take a look in to these animals who have spent there entire life trapped in a cage, and will most likely die before someone rescues them.
