An outbreak of disease has forced the Lied Animal Shelter to temporarily halt all adoptions and euthanize some of its animals.
---------------------------------------------------------- The shelter is need of clean blankets and towels, which can be dropped off during the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. to the receiving area in the parking lot at the shelter. It is located at 655 N. Mojave Road, Las Vegas. ----------------------------------------------------------
Three highly contagious diseases were discovered in several animals Friday morning during a routine check of the shelter's cats and dogs.
Veterinarians immediately isolated the infected animals which are suffering from canine distemper, canine parvovirus and feline panleukopenia.
The diseases can be fatal. Shelter workers say the most difficult one to treat is the parvovirus.
"One, it can be very tough on puppies. It's very very difficult to get rid of. They've done tests where there's parvo on the cement surface and washed it over and over again with disinfectants and the parvo is still there," said Mark Fierro, Lied Animal Shelter.
Outbreaks of similar diseases, they say, have happened here in the past, but this is the first time they've locked the shelter down in an effort to isolate it and treat it fast.
Right now vets are checking all of the animals one by one -- and there are thousands of them down there.
Lied spokesman Mark Fierro says the disease can be treated, but it's expensive and hard to get rid of.
"For the past several weeks we have had experts who have been on site," said Fierro. "We are working with them to develop a three day plan and and longer term solutions which will permanently address containment of these types of diseases."
Animal rescue volunteers say they've been told several hundred animals have been euthanized, but Lied has not confirmed that number.
Fierro says this is the only shelter that accepts all animals; none are turned away, so the possibility of animals coming down with something is not out of the picture.
Additionally, the vaccination and spay/neuter clinics are closed to the public and will not reopen until the disease outbreak is under control. The community is encouraged to seek such services from local veterinary clinics in the meantime.
"We will address this issue and in solving it, we will become a better shelter," said Fierro. "We have taken this extraordinary measure in an attempt to protect the community's pets. We believe that we will be able to return to normal operations within the next three weeks."

This neglect is totally inexcusable. Lied is a state of the art facility! It is shameful that the management there let this get so out of hand and that the US Humane Society had to call for the emergency closure.

Hi,
By now you probably have heard about the emergency closure of the Lied Animal Shelter ordered by the Humane Society of the United States. If not, please read about this tragic holocaust on the Review Journal website and the websites of our local television stations.
Many of us in our animal loving community have struggled with our feelings this weekend considering the loss of so many loving, precious, helpless furry friends.
To honor their memory and encourage a thorough review and remedy of the conditions at Lied, we have organized a Candlelight Vigil in memory of all the cats and dogs who lost their lives this past weekend at Lied.
WHEN: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: FREEDOM PARK at Bonanza and Mohave -- please use the Mohave entrance and gather in the southwest corner of the park kitty corner from the Lied Shelter.
WHAT: Please bring candles to light, signs express our feelings about protecting the domestic animals of our community
We caution against bringing your pets with you. We will be close to the shelter. Distemper is a very contagious airborne disease. Please consider this when making your plans to attend.

I have it on an "inside tip" that last Friday alone, over 500 dogs were killed and that the head of the Veterinary Department has a past history of mass euthanization at another shelter in the Las Vegas Valley.
I also have another friend who runs a non-profit (501 c3) who has pulled over 150 dogs from the shelter in the past week. She needs help and donations to keep the animals alive and healthy. I'm going to post a share in just a few minutes. I hope you'll look for it and pass it on to your Network!

Consider calling hotels & casinos for towels & blanket donations. One response may supply more than needed for the animals.Have seen this story before & suggested researching who owns land,is it a 501-c3 that is current.Report to have it revoked with solid verified information, tap into news, local t.v.coverage,ask those who have donated to come foward, gather vet info. on each and every sick animal, contact health dept. usually in charge of animal agencies & books should be open to those who support them.If conditions do not improve(take photos or gather any available)Where does their money go,is food supply plentiful, vet on staff, who is on board of directors to contact?Be willing to publish responses good or bad from the board, request updates on status of any particular animal. If funds are not going to animals, do not be shy about asking IRS to do an audit.Get city & county officials involved & on alert.Any & all have the power to enforce good care, pull animals & file criminal charges, cancel local permits, leases etc.
Elected officials are there to serve you and will schedule an appt. to hear the case you have to present. They do not want to be tagged with an inhumane revolting situation.Get some letters going to all reps.,vets,mayor,P.D. any agency you can think of to enforce change.

Lied Shelter's Problems Much Worse Than Expected
There is more information on what went wrong at the Lied Animal Shelter. It all came out at a heated meeting Wednesday night.
Janie Greenspun-Gale is the head of the group that runs the shelter. She said that more than 1,000 pets had to die because of bad decisions.
Lied finally called in outside experts when things started getting out of control. The shelter is now working to implement all the National Humane Society Policies.
Keep it tuned to Channel 13 Action News for the latest on Lied's improvements.

I must apologize for the other entries as I was doing something wrong and figured it out.
What I wanted to say was:
I feel for Lied Animal Shelter the same way I do for so many shelters across the United States. Animal holding and adoption protocols are tasks....
Many times the missing link, and what's not given appropriate attention, is the total cleaning protocol. A correct cleaning protocol should target these items:
1) correct chemical to destroy viruses, bacteria, fungus', etc.
2)correct chemical to surface contact time which allows the chemical to do its job
3) correct water temperature to work in conjunction with the chemical
4) Scrubbing action whether by hand or by water pressure
5) correct amount of water flow to rinse and carry everything down the drain.
There's even more to it than that. however, if you have a good flow from animal holding all the way through adoption; in conjunction with the correct cleaning protocol, you can control disease outbreaks.

I just found this web site,I had a 11 month old beautiful dog who was killed by lied animal shelter on Feb 13,2007.His name was Odie Canelo Brown. They didn't do their job ,they where letting animal die in their cages and therfore the ones that where heathly was getting sick,I will be sueing the lied animal shelter,I think all that work there and was in charge during this so be euthanized after they where also left to suffer in a small cage with some sort of disease, just like they did to all those beautiful dogs and cats.
