The festive season is here but how do you enjoy it without turning into a Christmas pudding? Here are a few trick:

Swap this ... for this

A small glass of mulled wine will give you about 250 calories and you will struggle even to guesstimate the units of alcohol. Opt for more familiar choices such as wine, spirits or lager.

A prawn cocktail packs in 420 calories. Swap it for half a pint of prawns — just 90.

A dollop of bread sauce gives you 50 calories but a teaspoon of cranberry sauce just 7.

Lean roast duck has 150 calories per 90g slice, minus the skin, and a lot of the fat is monounsaturated, which does not raise bad cholesterol. This makes it a good alternative to turkey.

Allow 330 calories per standard serving of Christmas pudding, and add 140 calories if you have custard and 110 calories if you have a tablespoon of brandy butter. However, two tablespoons of single cream will give you just 60.

A small ball of sage and onion stuffing will add 140 calories to your festive turkey meal and the sausage version, 120.

A 170g serving of sherry trifle contains about 280 calories and one unit of alcohol (home-made) or a quarter of a unit (shop-bought).

A date has 41 calories and one satsuma 25.

A small (35g) serving of Stilton contains 144 calories; two bath oliver biscuits 104 calories; and one small pat of butter 70. Stick to grapes — a 100g bunch has just 60 calories.

If you want to round off your meal with an Irish coffee, remember that one serving has 320 calories. However, a normal coffee with a splash of milk has just 30.
