The story of a fisheries scientist forced into drafting a harebrained scheme to introduce salmon fry to the baked riverbeds of the Arabian Peninsula, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is structured like a romantic comedy, but in fact, it's far more slippery than a simple tale of opposites attract.

A fusion of political satire, grown-up romance, metaphysical crisis and East-West culture clashes, this adaptation of Paul Torday's bestseller sometimes feels like too many fish swimming in the same barrel, but Hallstrom has a knack for finding the right narrative touch.
