Thank you so much for covering a critical story of how New York City either protects or destroys the treasures we are so fortunate to enjoy – our wildlife.

I am only one of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who treasure the area’s surrounding wildlife, especially the beautiful and majestic Canada Geese.

We are living in a world where wildlife is under such extreme attack and extinction is exponentially increasing on every corner of the planet. The recent award-winning documentary, Winged Migration, captured the heartbreakingly fragile eco-survival of Canada Geese as they must push through toxic hazardous waste, turbulent winds, over-development, hunters, climate change and so much more. The fact that some manage to survive is a celebration.

This city, and in fact, this country, does not have any over-arching wildlife protection program in place and most, if not all of the protections afforded by the Migratory Bird Act have been rescinded or mangled beyond recognition by moneyed interests who have long been ired by the delays in developing property inhabited by the birds.

For details, please see: http://goosewatchnyc.blogspot.com/

My grass-roots animal rescue group, The Urban Wildlife Coalition_NYC, is requesting that Attorney General Eric Schneiderman investigate the fraudulent claims that Sen. Gillibrand is alleging, as well as Mayor Bloomberg and others, who fault Canada Geese for air traffic safety when, in fact, accidents are a result of lax air safety measures including a recent lowering of flight patterns, the installment of a garbage transfer station directly next to JFK, the continuing below-par maintenance of aircraft due to cut-backs and union-busting, etc. In fact, only .068% of any air traffic incidents are attributed to birds, the primary cause stated by the FAA is "pilot error" or "mechanical failure." Exterminating our wildlife is a fraudulent PR move that annihilates a species for political gain.
