Adam (Luke Treadaway, ATTACK THE BLOCK, CLASH OF THE TITAN is the lead singer of a highly successful electropop duo, The Make – think The Postal Service with more cheekbones and an Urban Outfitters giftcard. Adam’s a bit of a primadonna, with his model girlfriend and refusal to use a port-a-potty, and while driving through the festival, he runs into Morello (Natalia Tena, the HARRY POTTER films, GAME OF THRONE whose post-punk band The Dirty Pinks is bringing their bad attitudes to the festival for the first time. Morello doesn’t care for Adam and threatens to smash his guitar, until fate, in the form of a black festival goer, a very obvious magical negro character, handcuffs them together and sends the pair careening through the festival to find the key to their handcuffs, hopefully before either band has to perform.
While Adam and Morello begin the film hating each other, there’s no question that the two will find each other at the end of the long night; Morello’s boyfriend is a boring banker, and Adam’s superficial model girlfriend are designed to be unlikable from the start, as are most of the people at the festival. Director David McKenzie paints everyone as contemptible for one reason or another: they’ve all got their own agendas (Kim, who works for a Greenpeace proxy), are creepy (the drunken manager of (The Make), or are immature (everyone else). It seems that only Adam and Morello can get together not because they’re any better than anyone else, but since they’re both musicians they have a connection that no one else is able to understand.
The film takes a half documentary, half found footage approach, and while you know the film was filmed at the T in The Park festival, it even feels, except for perhaps a few moments, actually feels like you’re there, or even watching a film about the festival. Perhaps this is because the movie spends too much time with the supporting characters, most of whom are not fleshed out enough to be interesting enough to follow for any significant length of time.
The only reason TONIGHT YOU’RE MINE isn’t completely the kind of self indulgent stuff that Mackenzie probably associates with these kinds of festivals and its attendees is the performances from Treadaway and Tena, particularly during the performance sequences in the film. It seemed like they were doing their own singing, and in those moments, the film got close to the joy and spontaneity that comes with seeing live music: responding to the energy of the crowd, getting caught up in the song, and really creating a connection between artists and audiences, which the film as a whole never really achieves. Treadaway in particular, in tight skinny jeans and a nearly threadbare shirt, is every bit the rock star, and nails the attitude and aesthetic perfectly and there’s enough chemistry between him and Tena that you know that the two could carry a better written romance more effectively.
TONIGHT YOU’RE MINE is like listening to a concert on DVD. While it’s got some fun parts to it, it’s just not the same if you’re not there. I’d say save your money and go to a festival.
