As my 65th birthday is the eighth of August, I have scheduled my retirement date for September first.  I have been paying into the Social security system since 1964 and along with two Union pensions and many years of saving and wise investments, I will have a comfortable retirement.  That being said, I am outraged to learn that although my retirement date will be September first and I will no longer be allowed to work or collect unemployment compensation, I will not receive a payment until October tenth at best.  This won't adversely  effect me in any meaningful way but it started me thinking:  What if I were just barely hanging on to my home or apartment,  what if I needed to pay for any one of a myriad of unavoidable expenses and had no other source of income or rescources?  How the Hell do they expect me to survive with zero cash flow for six weeks?  In my humble opinion... Payments should begin on the first day of retirement not six to eight weeks later...
