We are accountable to respond to life as we are able.  What is our response to the world?

Do we respond to life's pressures as victims?  Or do we respond to challenges with a victorious m\nd?  How do we look at the world?  Do we view ourselves as powerless or do we turn to our inner strengths, realizing we were created in the image of God?  Do we look at the world as a friendly place?  Do we feel a part of it all?  Do we feel connected to nature and people?  Do we respond to life with a smile...or do we look back at life with a frown?

So much of life is dependent upon how we respond to it.  We can make our life better or worse.  We have the ability to respond in a positive way, no matter what life brings our way.  We will be much healthier if we go through life with a smile.  A sense of gratitude and a positive attitude go a long way in bringing about improved health, and an overall improvement in quality of life.

When we respond to life with a positive attitude and take responsibility for that which is ours, not only will we notice an increased level of health, but the whole world will respond better to us in return.  We attract to us that which we are.  What we put out, we get back.

We are also called to take care of ourselves the best that we are able.  How do we respond to this call?  Do we do all that is within our ability to do in attending to our own well-being, or do we shuck the responsibility off to someone else after we've become ill from not responding to our physical needs the best that we can?  What is the best that you think you are able?  Perhaps you're not giving yourself enough credit.   Decide how you want to respond to life's call. Learn what you can do take take care of your health, and then respond the best that you're able.  Do a little more than you think you can!  That's the only way to improve your level of health.

But what about others?  Is it our responsibility to also help them??  Isn't it enough that we take responsibility for our own life, our own thoughts, our own actions?  Can't others take care of themselves?

While it is of the utmost importance, yes, to be responsible for our own thoughts and actions, and to realize there is a connection between what we put out into the world and what comes back to us, we also need to do more than just give to get back.

In order to be truly responsible, we need to help take care of those who cannot care for themselves, or at least don't make their lives worse.  In order to properly respond to life, we need to take into account that all of life is connected.  We are all in this together.  We're one.  When there is suffering of which we're aware and it is within our ability to respond in a helpful manner, then yes, it is our responsibility to help.  Love others as we love ourselves.  Meditate on the Oneness of Life and you'll understand.
"And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these." (Mark 12:30-31)
Is sending a charitable donation off in the mail good enough?  Well it helps, if we're able, by all means.  Send one to us, if you'd like!  Essentials of Life Holistic Enrichment Center exists entirely thanks to donations.  Send donations to other places, as well...to places which help you or others...organizations which help heal the world.  This is good!

Give money, too, if you are able, or whatever other assistance is needed, to those in your own family or community.  Money isn't always the answer.  Perhaps what someone needs is your time.  Read to your elderly aunt, play with your divorced sister's kids, invite someone who's lonely over for supper...whatever the need, respond as you feel led, but respond to the need as you would wish someone would do if it were you.  Some day it may be.  You don't know.

And what of our responsibility to world full of people in need.  What can we do for them, besides sending a check in the mail?  We could reach out personally in some way, I suppose.  I have done that before.  It feels good to help a stranger in need!  Brainstorm a little.  Think of ways you can reach out to others and help.  Volunteer somewhere, perhaps.  Volunteering is a wonderful way you can give!

You are only responsible for responding as much as you're able.  No one can possibly save the whole world, no matter how much suffering there is and no matter how earnestly we wish to help.  We can, however, help them through prayer.  Pray in thanksgiving that the world is becoming more aware of ways to help, and pray to become willing to do your part.

Why pray for willingness when I'm sure you are already willing to help?  Because here is where it might enter into our personal lifestyles and preferences.  Here's where it starts to get tough.  Sending a check in the mail is nice, but there is more you can do.  Praying, yes.  Of course we should pray, we all know, but to really make a difference in the lives of others, we need to respond to their problems as if they matter, and don't make them worse by participating in the perpetuation of pain.
"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." ( Matthew 25:40)
Take a look to your everyday habits and see if you are unwittingly participating in hurting others.  You may think this sounds preposterous, but the truth is that most of us are adding to the misery of the world without even realizing we are.  Horrific things are happening to people due to the choices we make at the grocery store, the clothing store, the drug store, the gas station pump.  I hardly know where to start!

Let's talk fair trade, for instance.  Did you know that if the chocolate you buy is not certified Fair Trade, then chances are children were actually enslaved to ensure its production?  The same thing is true of many food items.  Coffee, for instance.  Is it worth the price paid by the children to save you a few cents?  Perhaps you didn't know this before.  Well now you do, so you are accountable to respond in the best way that you can.  Grace only will cover so far!   Fair Trade products are better for the worker, the consumer and the environment.
"At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." ( Mstthew 18:1-6)
As to the environment, do we have a responsibility to it, as well?  Yes, we do.  We are to respond as we are able.  Is what we're doing the best we can do?  Let's look at an example of this in considering how our choices in the grocery line affect this.  Let's take the example of using chemical fertilizers.  Are we possibly destroying our world when we choose to save a few cents and not buy organic?  The implications for the future of the environment are bigger than one might suppose, as are the implications of what it can do to our health.  I ask again, are the choices we make in the grocery line reflective of our best response to a world in need, or is there more we are able to do?
"The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till and keep it," Genesis 2:15
Also in the grocery line, consider any suffering incurred by animalsin the food choices you make.  Are you able to respond to your hunger in a way that doesn't cost life?  It's your choice, but again, hiding your head doesn't make you any less responsible for the suffering and pain, nor do cries that you're no worse than anyone else.  Respond to life the best you are able.  Animals, too, are filled with life...and when they are ex0loited, they hurt.  Look at how your choices affect them as well.
"I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine." (Psalms 50:11)
We are not perfect, but by the same token, we also have more power over our lives and the future of the world than we may think.  Think again!  Respond to the best of your ability, and then you'll find life responds back in a positive way.  Love yourself, and love one another.  It's more than a simple request, it's a whole entire way of life.  Respond to the whole world with love!

Keep working at it.  I have done things in the past whence unaware that I would never take part in today.  For instance, I really enjoyed my horse and carriage ride with my husband in New York City, until I realized that of course the horses are suffering horribly for this.  They walk all day in the heat, with few breaks, and at night are returned to a garage.  They do not live a very good life, and then when they are too tired to keep going, they are sent to the glue factory, or dog-food factory, or somewhere like that...not an idyllic field like the storybooks show.  It's time to grow up and respond to the cries of the world in better ways.  That was my last carriage ride.

How will you respond to the needs of your life today and those of the world?  To the best of your ability, I hope. That's all anyone's expected to do, but by the looks of the world, I think perhaps maybe sometimes we're not.  Let's take a new look at ways we can respond which we're able to do.  We'll be response-able then!

Genesis1.org is the online message vehicle for the Essentials of Life Holistic Enrichment Center.  We are a Universal Life Church.  We are teaching Universal Principles Essential to LIFE and the well-being of body, spirit and mind.  We believe in doing that which is right, living and helping to live.  We know that doing our best for ourselves and others is the right thing to do.  Our lives will be enriched when we live and help others to live, resp0onding to all  of life with the ability granted to us and in so doing we glorify God!  And so it is...Amen.

Blessings,
