Hi, my name is Mark and I have been a caregiver for 25 years, a job I love, and would not want to do anything else. I work with the elderly, a very enriching experience to say the least.

I will hopefully have time to post here.

I am a caregiver for my Dad. I had previously worked in Nursing Homes. I am a Medical Assistant and currently not working as I am with my Dad all the time. I really need a group that I can vent, cry what ever because some days are so hard. I took care of my brother who was mentally challenged and he passed away December of 2005. So, any advice ar just support would be most helpful as I am unemployed and really worrying about finances at this time also.

I have worked as a caregiver with the elderly for the past eight years. I now have a live-in position with a 52 year old lady with terminal cancer.

Hi. My Name is Teresa. Throughout my life I have been I guess what you could call a domestic caregiver. I have taken in children that had nowhere to go and I have worked in nursing homes. Shortly before my Dad's mom died, I took care of her. My sister and I had not met our grandmother up until now. The stories we heard growing up were never good. My grandma had dementia=alzheimer's. There come a point where my grandma was near impossible to care for as she would wonder around in the night sometimes falling, and she would often show agressive behavior. we eventually put her in a nursing home.My mom always said she didn't care what happened before she died (I'm not sure why she made such a statement)but she would rather be dead than to "go crazy." yhat's what she called my grandma's illness. My grandma has been dead for about 10 years now and my dad passed away last year. I now am caring for my mom who has dementia-alzheimer's.It is so disheartening to watch the very illness she feared lock her life away. She is at the mid stages of the illness where she knows what is going on at times and other times she don't understand. She does however understand that she has trouble putting her thoughts together with an action. I now know that my mom would not rather be dead as I watch her strggle daily to be normal. If crying, frustration and anger....along with guilt (for whatever trouble I may have ever caused her) would cure this terrible illness, it would cease to exsist.I pray everyday that a better treeatment or cure can be found for this thing they call alzheimer diease because it has lasting effects on more than just the person that is ill.

Hi ! There should be a lot more info about care givers and for care givers . The phsycological impact can be very devastating. I was an ambulance attendant, worked in a hospital in a chronic ward and in all sections except maternity.
I cared for my wife at home during her final months, she died of cancer.I hope this groups survives .

Rebecca - I'm new to Care2 and am excited to find a group about caregiving. I've been a caregiver to my Mom with Alzheimer's for the last 5 years. She is now in a lock down unit in a safe environment. I would like to help with any questions anyone has with caregiving. It's an emotional roller coaster, but one that can be turned into something wonderfully beautiful also.

My problem as a family caregiver is that people disregard what you do, because you aren't educated in the medical profession, but are the only one who can or will take care of them. The people I've been around seem to think that you can just put your family members in a home, but a doctor has to say they can go. Otherwise, you have to change your life to take care of your loved ones. My mom and I both took care of my grandmother and uncle for years, and those were some of the hardest years I will probably ever spend. Now my mom has had a mini-stroke or something which has permanently changed her personality. I see my life becoming much as it was with my grandmother, as their anxieties are the same. It is a very stressful job and does take 24/7 of your time. My grandmother was in a nursing home later, and my uncle a rest home. We had little time after they passed on to change our lives when this struck my mom. Everyone needs a support system when they are a caregiver, as with it comes so many complications in your life, and with what you see and have to do.
