Does prayer work for healing?  It does!  How does it work?  Well, that depends on the type of prayer that you use, but generally speaking, it works by aligning our will with the Will of God.

Prayer is not designed to change God.  The Will of God is immutable.  The Will of God is always, always our highest good.  The idea of prayer is to align our mind with the Mind of God, so that we can manifest this Good in our life.

As mentioned, there are various forms of prayer, some of which work better than others at this time or that.  The first thing to understand, however, is that it's what's in our heart that matters the most during prayer.  Pure intentions and motives makes a huge difference in the effectiveness of prayer.  The idea of prayer is to lift our consciousness to a higher place in order to manifest a higher expression of Good.  Prayers for harm to come to others don't work.  They only bring harm to us, by pulling our consciousness down.

So prayer must be POSITIVE in order to work, and it must also be full of faith.  We are not trying to convince God that we deserve what is best, we're praying to open our own heart to receiving the good that is already there, waiting to show forth in our life.

Affirmative prayer is one type of prayer which is always good.  Affirmative prayer is much more than wishful thinking and trying to brainwash ourselves and God into bringing about good in our life; it is actually affirming the presence of God which is already there...the active Power for Good in our life.  It is recognizing God's perfect peace, infinite wisdom, unconditional love, desire for health, happiness and harmony at work.  It is allowing these forces to work together for good within us, and trusting the process is in effect before the end result becomes evident.  We already know it is good, because of our faith.  Faith called into action always expresses as our highest good!  Affirmations are a recognition of this, letting go of all false ideas of limitation, and only recognizing God's perfect vision coming about.

Sometimes we don't recognize the answers to prayers, because we have a preconceived notion as to how those answers should come about.  If we are wise we will pray for God's will to be done instead of our own, because God's will is always for our highest good.  We don't always know what's best for us.  Prayer works by making us ready to accept our good.  If our mind is closed to what that is, then we very well might miss the gift!  Humility is important in prayer.

Prayers of begging don't do very much good.  In fact, they can actually have the opposite effect, because they demonstrate a lack of faith in the idea that God is already at work in our best interest.  We are healed according to our faith.  With little faith, there is little healing.  It is far better to pray to be shown than to pray for God to do good, because good is already at work.  The problem is we don't see.
Prayers of thanksgiving open us up to receive greater good, by helping us to recognize God (Good) at work in our life.  When we make a practice of giving thanks for all we are blessed with, we'll start to realize that God really does provide for our every need.  It's pretty hard to complain when your mind is set on all that is right!  Start with the obviou things, like the ability to breathe or to walk or to hear and just go from there.  The list goes on and on as to how many ways we are blessed!  Make as long of a list as you can...adding onto the list every day!  You'll find the answers to prayers that you never even bothered to say.  Our needs are already met before we think to ask.  It's hard to complain when we realize how very much we do have to be grateful for!  Make use of what you already have and you'll find the answers to all of your prayers.

Prayers of forgiveness are also powerful healers.  It's impossible to totally heal with hatred or resentment brewing within your heart.  Forgiveness of others leads to self-forgiveness.  Until we can forgive ourselves and others, we cannot find that place of Perfect Love in our heart.  It is this Love which is God, and this is where all healing begins.

Forgiveness doesn't mean you have to re-involve yourself with the individual you are forgiving, it simply means to recognize them as someone needing God's love, and praying for healing and a higher sense of insight and compassion to emanate through them in all that they do.  Only when others become enlightened will change occur.  The same holds true for ourselves.  Judge not lest ye be judged.  Have compassion yourself to be healed.  Forgiveness doesn't mean they were right, it means to "give for."  In other words, it gives for them being wrong.  Forgiveness sometimes means knowing the other person (or yourself) is wrong and extending God's love to them (or yourself) anyway.

Really the only thing to ask iu prayer is not for things or this outcome or that, but rather for the ability to see the best route to take...the right thing to do...and pray to be willing to proceed upon those lines.  After that the important thing is to listen and then to act upon what we know to be right.  Spend time in quiet prayer to begin developing the ability to filter out the wee small voice of God from the rat-a-tat-tat of everyday life.  You will recognize the right thing to do when you ask in prayer.  Answers come when we are open to them.  This is all part of the Power of prayer.

Here's what I wrote about the Healing Power of Prayer in my book, "God's Gifts of Healing:  The Essentials of Life!" by Dr. Jody Evans ("Vibraceous ND"):
Prayer is the conscious path to connecting our mind with the Infinite Mind of God.  If we use affirmative prayer -- affirming our Oneness with the Perfect Design of the Universe -- we begin to express that perfection in us.  This is healing.  The more steadfastly we cling to this connection and refuse to allow the misconception of negative thinking to enter our conscious mind, the more our body will conform to the idea of perfection that is planted within.

We were created in the image of God…in the image of Perfect Life.  We are meant to be clear, open channels for the Goodness of God to work through.   This is the example Christ Jesus set, and we were all invited to follow Him.

We don’t have to beg God to heal us.  It is God’s will for us to be well.  What we must do during prayer is to turn our will over to God.  “Thy will, not my will, be done.”

God sees us as perfect and whole.  When we can see ourselves in this way, our health is free to take form through our faith.

Negative thinking shows a great lack of faith.  Instead of bringing forth good, substance takes form as that which we do not desire, if this is where our attention is fixed.  This is prayer in reverse.  Our beliefs manifest themselves through our thoughts. “Whatever ye shall ask in prayer believing, ye shall receive.”  (Matthew 21:22)

When we steady our mind on the perfection of God working through us and take peace in knowing that health is at the core of our being, then we open the door to true healing.  “As a man thinketh within his heart, so is he.”   (Proverbs 23: 7)

The false belief that we can be separate from good, is to believe we are separated from God.  This is erroneous thinking, and it is the source of all sickness, pain and lack in our life.  When we envision ourselves to be separate from Infinite Good (God), we cut ourselves off from our Source and our health is compromised.

Become as a little child when you pray.

Children believe with all of their hearts…that’s what we need to do if we’re to be healed!

So even when you don’t feel very well, affirm that God’s health and vitality are within every cell of your being, energizing you and making you well.

Let nothing deter you from this belief.  God’s strength IN YOU is making you strong!

True prayer is the conscious realization of the constant presence of God in our life.  God the Good in our life.  Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Omniscient.  All-powerful, everywhere present, all-knowing God, working in and through our life for good.  There’s not a spot where God is not!  Look for the Good, it is there.

It is the thoughts, words and actions which we express in our day to day lives which constitute what we believe.  This is where faith comes into prayer--We have to have faith to believe that God (Good) is at work in our life even when things don’t look good to us.  It is this belief that grants us the grace to successfully pray and be healed.

Give thanks that you always have what you need to radiate God’s perfect health.  Pray for guidance and willingness to use what has been given, and then ACT on God’s guidance, for faith without works is dead!  Proper guidance will come if you ask.  Knock and the door is opened to you.

Pray for others, as well, for in praying sincerely for them, you are healed.

In particular, pray for those who have hurt you or for whatever reasons you harbor resentments against.  Forgiveness of others (and of yourself!) is essential to radiant health.

Sickness is a diversion from perfect design.  We were designed to be well.  We were also designed in the image and likeness of God.  God is Love.  To hold unforgiveness within our heart is to hold ourselves separate from love…to hold ourselves separate from God.  God can heal all sicknesses for God is Infinite Life…the Source and the Substance of all. To hold ourselves separate from God is to hold ourselves separate from the Life Force itself.

Prayer is the connecting link.

Give thanks and know you are healed through the grace of God!  And so it is.  Amen.
