Again on November 9th 2012 the main square in the Austrian City Linz became the location of an animal rights demonstration for research animals. The activists wanted to make the public aware of the current situation of research animals and the claims for a better animal research act.
After a big cage was put up, 3 naked, masked and painted with wounds acitivsts climbed in, while 3 others gathered around the cage with signs which said “All 3 minutes a research animal dies in Austria” and “Animal welfare into the animal research act!”
In only 10 days polititians will decide over the new animal welfare act, which is why many animal rights actions took places in the past days and weeks (see http://www.care2.com/c2c/share/detail/3469405 , http://www.care2.com/c2c/share/detail/3474245) . Not only should the public be informed this way about the topic but also the purpose was to put pressure on politicians to decide for, not against animal welfare.
Because it’s juridically not yet possible to ban all animal tests, the claims of the VgT (Association against animal farms) and other animal welfare organizations would be big step in the improvement of the situation for research animals. The most important improvements would be: A retrospective evaluation of every experiment (to evaluate which things are to avoid or improve in animal welfare), a non-technical description of all animal experiments understandable for everybody, an introduction of animal layers for research animals (in Austria there are already layers for farm animals and pets) and finally an evaluation catalogue with 3 degrees of severity, after which the most severe animal experiments must be forbid!
Since there is practically no transparence in animal experiments, active animal friends take that part and inform the public. So another point which desperately needs improvement is the public knowledge about the topic, because animal experiments are kept secret as much as possible.
Not before the panel discussion in Vienna on Nov. 7th 12, representatives for animal research interests and one representative of animal welfare discussed the topic in public. This was the first time this was possible. Before that every contact with animal welfare interests was avoided. Information about the panel discussion in German: http://www.veggies-linz.at/tierversuchsdiskussion-tierschutz-diskutiert-mit/ , http://www.vgt.at/presse/news/2012/news20121108e.php.
After the sensational demonstration on the main square, the acitivsts started a picket for research animals. Animal welfare messages were drawn on the asphalt with chalk, candles were lit for 100 000s research animals who died alone in Austria the past year and to keep the mood up, some activists played some music while others informed interested people.
Later the activists moved to the Pfarrplatz, another square not far away and kept their ground until Sunday, Nov, 11th.
Only a few days are left until the decision about research animals has fallen. More demonstrations will follow but everybody can help to change their situation.
