Business owners and employees typically put work before their health and this has very nasty effects. Some say that they promise to get more exercise or sleep earlier but most of these promises do not get fulfilled. After all, workers already complain that there are not enough hours in a day to get everything done so they do not have the time to make little changes or habits that could make improve their health.
Here are some of the most common physical ailments experienced by business owners and employees, as well as ways to fix them.
Staying seated at your desk all day
Your work desk could possibly be the death of you – literally. Most people who spend their days seated behind a desk clearly lead sedentary lives and according to the World Health Organization, it is the top 4th risk factor for death. One way to remedy this is to simply stretch your legs out under your desk. This eases the pressure on your backside and promotes the flow of blood to your legs. Do not forget to change positions every twenty minutes and if possible, go for short walks instead of using the intercom, Instant Messenger, or your RingCentral business phone when you need to talk to someone. It also helps to use the stairs instead of the elevator when you can.
Gaining weight
Not only are you sedentary, you also find yourself eating more food that is not exactly the best for you. Factor in birthday parties and other holidays, and you are sure to find your waistline expanding by the week. Also, people tend to eat more when stressed so the presence of rich food around the workplace is not going to help. Beat weight gain by bringing packed lunches that are full of nutritious snacks along with a meal or two. Resist the urge to eat salty or sugary snacks while working since mindless eating is a great contributor to weight gain.
Lacking sleep
Sleep is one of the most important things your body needs and without it, you can pass away in as little as 11 days. You can go without food for 3 weeks or more but without sleep, you are in a lot of danger. Working overtime does not give you a pass to come in later the morning after so it is best to keep a timeframe that allows you to get adequate rest.
Straining your eyes
With the prevalence of computers, smartphones and tablets, screens comprise a large chunk of what employees look at every day. Add inadequate lighting and that is a recipe for eye strain. It is recommended to take breaks and resting your eyes by looking at something in the distance or by looking at foliage if you are fortunate enough to by a window. The color green is said to have calming properties, as well as stimulating creativity.
Working non-stop
There is a reason why lunch breaks are mandatory. Everyone needs a little downtime to compose themselves and when you do not take any time for rest, you risk running your vision and give yourself a slew of aches and pains. Do not forget to take a break from whatever it is you are doing and you will find that you perform better.
