Janet Davis The officer that found him has been keeping close tabs on "Rocky" (as he calls him). He's still alive but with a questionable prognosis. They have a long term plan for him in place, too. Keep praying for him. His frontal sinus has been completely destroyed, but they can't do anything about that until he gets stronger.

LORAIN, Ohio — The police are investigating after an emaciated and injured dog was found on the front lawn of an abandoned home on Saturday.

“You can see his ribs, you can see the spine of his scapula, you can see his pelvis bone,” said Dr. Thomas Wood from the Lorain Animal Clinic. Wood and his staff are treating the animal who was barely alive when he was brought to the clinic.

“Never seen a fracture located in this area of the dog, where the frontal sinus has been destroyed,” said Dr. Wood.

An unidentified caller notified police after the dog was discovered on West 11th Street around noon on Saturday. Once on the scene, the animal was transported to Dr. Wood’s office for evaluation. According to the police report, the responding officer said, “I have never seen such an emaciated dog, still alive, in my career.”

Dr. Wood said the likely pit bull mix weighs less than half what a dog, approximately 6-years-old, should weigh.

“This fracture happened a while ago and we don’t know what happened, if he was hit by a car, if he was beaten by something, but [there's] a complete fracture, the whole front of the dog’s skull,” said the vet.

The treating veterinarian said the injuries aren’t new and the dog, who has no known name, has obviously been denied food for a long time. Dr. Wood is now focused on stabilizing the dog for a few weeks before he can undergo surgery on his head injury.

“[He] has an excellent temperament, eats right outta your hand, very loving dog,” said Dr. Wood. “Just needs a little more time and some care and a long road to recovery, but hopefully we can get him fixed up.”

Lorain police are investigating but no one has been arrested.

LORAIN, Ohio - Lorain police are investigating a horrific case of animal abuse case over the weekend.

According to Lorain police, officers were called out to the tree lawn area of 816 W. 11th Street around 2:16 p.m. Saturday for a sick or injured animal.

Officers arrived at the scene and found a light brown pit bull, severely emaciated but still alive. The animal's bones were clearly visible through its skin. Lorain police said a dog of this breed should weigh around 75 pounds, but this dog appeared to weigh around 25 pounds.

The dog's owner is unknown and officers believe the animal had previously been caged, neglected and dumped. The dog's head was severely swollen and eyes forced shut.

The animal growled softly as officers approached and could barely raise its head off of the ground. It couldn't walk or stand.

Lorain police took the dog to the Lorain Animal Clinic, but the pit's fate is uncertain at this time due to its horrific condition.

If the owner of the dog can be identified, an arrest warrant will be issued for cruelty to animals.

Authorities in Lorain, Ohio are investigating a disturbing case of animal cruelty following the discovering of a severely emaciated pit bull this weekend.

According to Monday's News Channel 5, on Saturday afternoon, Lorain Police were notified about a sick animal on 11th Street.

What the responding officer found was indeed, shocking. A male pit bull, starved to the brink of death.

The dog, which should weigh approximately 75 pounds, weighed a dismal 25 pounds, and his head was so swollen that his eyes could not open.

Somehow the skeletal dog was still alive, albeit severely malnourished and too weak to even stand or raise his head from the ground.

Officials believe that the dog had purposefully denied food, perhaps locked in a cage prior to being dumped and left for dead.

The dog was taken to the Lorain Animal Clinic. The dog's condition is so poor that it is unknown if he will survive.

Anyone with information on this case of animal cruelty is asked to contact the police department. Anonymous tips can be made to: (440) 204-2555
