the probability of many people reading this is small. i just hope the RIGHT people read it.

my friends know me & know how i am. i don't have a filter; i say what i mean & mean what i say. excuse me in advance for any profanity & please know this doesn't apply to everyone, just a few people.

i am Indonesian. this obviously makes me Asian, Southeast Asian, to be exact. i was adopted very young, raised in a multi-cultural household & have had to deal with my share of racism growing up; but my parents raised me to love & accept EVERYONE, no matter what race, religion, disability or sexual preference.

i've been on care2 for almost three years, i know that's not a long time; but i've loved & fought for animals my entire life. they make me who i am. i'm on care2 because i want to help animals, nothing more, nothing less. receiving stars is nice & making friends along the way is a blessing; but at the end of the day, my focus is on animals & what i can do to help end their suffering.

the reason i am writing this share is this:

since i've been on care2, i've received hateful comments & messages about Asian people & their (mis)treatment of animals. allow me to say this: not all Asian people are scum. don't call me scum. not all Asian people eat everything that moves. i certainly don't. i'm not calling anyone a racist. i doubt anyone here really is one. what i am saying is this-- i'm pretty offended by the words some care2 members have chosen to use: barbarians, savages, scum of the earth, heartless, etc. saying our eyes are too slanted to be able to tell the difference between a cat & a chicken, go back to picking rice, making shoes & dry cleaning.

this is care2, a place for us to come together to fight for causes we all support. this isn't a place for hatred & disgusting behavior toward anyone.

don't categorize an entire race by the actions of some. i love animals. it's fair to say i would give my life to save an animal, especially one of my own. i wouldn't even hesitate. anyone who knows me knows this to be true. i'm not easily offended. disrespected, yes. i understand where some of you are coming from when you spew hatred for anyone who kills an animal for bullshit traditional medicinal purposes--i feel the same--but you need to watch your mouth when you come to me with any racist conversation. i can't sit here & listen to it & i'm not going to let anyone continue to make rude remarks to me when ALL I DO is love & protect animals.

it would be like me saying everyone in America goes to rodeos, hunts wolves, eats KFC & McDonald's & attends dog fights. why is it okay to say all Asians have no respect for life. do you know how much that hurts me? it tears me apart when i read those comments & at times, i've actually cried. i don't like to admit it, but the truth is, i have. it's really not about being offended at this point. it's about being disrespected. if you really knew me you would know i don't play when it comes to animals. i also don't play when it comes to ignorant people with their hateful bullshit.

you know what i'm talking about. you know who you are. at this time i'm asking you to stop the hateful messages & comments. i'm not getting down on your  level. i do hope it's fun for you down there. this isn't elementary school & i won't report you, because at the end of the day, i know you're here to help animals; if i reported you, the animals will continue to suffer. they need us. you need to recognize who is the adult here & who's the ignorant individual.

try this: get off your high horse, look in the mirror & ask yourself--why you think you're better than me?? if you have such a big issue w/ Chinese people, then boycot China. take everything out of your closets, your kitchen cabinets-- as a matter of fact, your entire household--remove everything that was Made in China, then see what you have left. a lot of you are hypocrites & you know it. what makes you so perfect that you can judge anybody? oh wait...i call bullshit. we're the same. race is a social construct. learn your history. we're all human.

i can be a good friend or a bad enemy. the choice is yours.

i've said my piece, thanks for reading. have a good one. Wink

Thanks Gysele, glad you feel free to speak against lumping groups of people into derogatory piles. We get this all the time as Native Americans and it gets so tiring. Thanks for the strong words. maybe...just maybe someone will listen and even have a change of heart.

I agree completely with what you've said here Gysele. I admit there have been times when I have blamed an entire continent because of the bad behaviour of a few, and for that I apologize. Thank you for posting this!!

Dear Gysele,

I truly want to apologize for my comment regarding Chinese people that I posted in a comment on C2NN. I really should have thought about how that comment could hurt someone. I regret every word I said. You are absolutely right about not condemning any race based on the actions of a few. I hope that we can continue to fight together to be the voice for all animals and I hope you can forgive me. Very sincerely yours, Tamara Hayes

After reading what Gysele just wrote, I'm not sure if I can describe just how blessed and proud I am to be close to her. What you have described Gysele happens far more often than it should, and more often than some think, particularly on such a progressive website like Care2. It happens like this...a story will come out on Care2 where the topic is some bad behavior by, perhaps, Asians, or Muslims, or Catholics, perhaps even Italians...and the hateful comments begin to spew from those who are either so ignorant and/or so stupid to think that the actions of some should necessarily define the entire group (to paraphrase what you so eloquently said). Most of us on Care2 are passionate people. Let's channel it appropriately and empower the cause of helping animals or the environment or impoverished women...not tear each other down personally. There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with another's opinions or even that person's behavior...but there's something terribly wrong with attacking another personally, particularly with racist and/or ethnic slurs and stereotypes. I am blessed to know Gysele and can attest to all the good that she does for animals...she is both selfless and tireless when it comes to helping animals, and it is both humbling and inspiring. She is someone who truly "walks the walk" when it comes to making a difference in the lives of animals. Many of us like to think we are making a difference in the lives of animals...Gysele actually does. To attack her and other Asians personally with racist bigotry is both infuriating and repugnant, and I, for one, will ALWAYS have her back, as well as that of other Asian people, many of whom have taught me so much and have helped mold my life and my character into what it is today. I will be eternally grateful to Asians and their culture (specifically, Koreans) and all the peace, strength, and love they have brought into my life. And if there are those who are so negative, so cold-hearted and mean, and so bigoted that they would actually make an enemy of someone as kind and giving as Gysele, then they would most certainly make an enemy of me as well.

Thank you Gysele. Thanks for all you do for animals, and thanks also for being a shining example to all of us about what patience and tolerance should look and sound like...what a phenomenal post!

Agreed, I have seen some comments that are utterly contemptible, that had these been made against gays, women and others the comments would have been removed. Some call for the entire elimination of anyone of Asian descent, a Hitler like belief. One can love animals without insulting an entire ethnic group. The comments should be against anyone perpetrating cruel acts which will take place in any nation. One does not put down everyone in one specific country or race.

Wow, I was channeling for your pup and I got this posting. Very nice little lady. I have walked with wolves as an outcast, well I was an outcast first then the wolves started walking with me. So, the animals accepted me. Now, after so many mistakes, guilt, been broken and my life was so far from normal. I am so far from perfect and openly admitting very regretful of so many things, pagan and native American, I even denied that until a couple years ago. so being racist was never in my soul, could never judge anyone, I was too worthless. But seeing you being judged, and seeing your strength. I am happy to stand in the circle of life with you dear one. I am now standing in the circle stronger, pulling it with all the animals and my children and all my guilt and all my memories and happy your here with me :)

you are absolutely right. many westerners like myself, were raised in ignorance to attend rodeos, eat meat, discount other countries citizens as 'less than' but times are changing. huge hugs

Dear Gysele, I am really sorry to hear that you have been called all those things and been hurt so much. I'm Asian too and I feel your pain because I know you to be the most passionate crusader for animal and human rights too. Please know that we are all with you and that nothing these ignorant people say can take away the importance of the role that you are playing, here on care2 and in your personal life too. Stay strong and be happy always.

P.S.- Who decides what should be eaten and what can't? Perhaps some of those who eat cats and other animal just don't know better. They've been eating them for centuries long before white people even came to the Americas in fact. Many Hindus do not eat beef as it is against their religion and perhaps they too look down upon Western cultures for doing so. It ultimately all boils down to a matter of perspective, doesn't it?

I agree completely it is like saying because all members of the KKK are white all whites are racist. I am white but when I hear about their racist attitudes I am ashamed to be white. Be proud of who you are and be proud of your heritage. Best wishes

This was a lovely blog - so honest and from the heart. I am sorry you have endured such racism. Being white, it hasn't often happened to me, but I've been treated poorly for other reasons (like being disabled). I think Asian people are some of the smartest and most ethical people I've ever met and you deserve to be treated with the love and compassion you clearly display in your every day life. The evidence of that is right here in the blog, where you are unwilling to sacrifice the animals just to report someone who was mean to you. I applaud you. Keep being a wonderful Care2 member!
