The difference between an acquaintance and a friend is that an acquaintance is someone you meet and you won't even care so much about what they do in their personal lives. A friend, on the other hand, is a person we keep close to our heart. Their personal feelings and endeavors are our concerns as well. It is very easy to make friends. The problem is, how to you keep the flame of friendship alive in another person's heart? I came up with a few suggestions that I hope will show that way to keep the fire of friendship burning even for a long time.
Dial That Number
What's the use of having a smartphone in your pocket if you don't use it? A friendly hello is a welcome surprise to anyone. There are instances when your friend won't have an idea why you called but just to listen to your voice and at the same time, hear the enthusiasm and the interest that you want to talk to that person really means a lot. Don't just call during special occasions. Make it a point to do so every time you get the chance. Just tell them that you decided to call because you wanted to know how they are doing is already music to your friend's ears. In case your friend is away, make it a point to leave a voicemail to them.
No Advices, Please
There are instances when your friend will come to you and ask for your advice. Don’t give your friend a piece of your mind, no matter how desperate they ask for one. Instead of giving advices, ask a question back. So if they ask you what they should do next, return to them the question by asking them what they want to do next. Let him or her do most of the talking and you'll find out that in the end, your friend will be advising himself. He'll even thank you for being just a good listener.
You Can Do Better
Don't be too appreciative when your friend shows off his or her talents and capabilities. Give them a constructive criticism so that they will push themselves more to obtain a level short of perfection. When your friends ask you to take a look at their painting or masterpiece, don't give them that "wow!" feeling. It will make them think that they have attained enough and won't need to improve themselves further. Instead, show to them that they can do better to further improve themselves. It will pay off in the end and your friend will even consider you as their mentor who helped them become the best that they can be.
Just Be Here!
There are cases when an occasion comes along where your friend will doubt if he or she has to be there with you. Don't let them think of an excuse. Just make them come. If you can obligate them to come to the special occasion you sponsored. Don't take excuses for an answer. This may sound that you are trying to boss your friend around but in reality, you are making him reciprocate with your responses. When they do come, make sure that you show your appreciation. Remember, it takes money and effort to get to remote venues. In some cases, they might need to purchase new clothes just for your party.
Don't worry about your penmanship; it's always the thought that counts. Who among these days use snail mail? Well, it's your chance to show them that you still do, and believe me; getting a handwritten mail the traditional way is always special. In the years to come, you'll be surprised to find out that the letter you wrote by hand is still kept in a special drawer by your good friend.
