Originally the chief god of Thebes, Amon grew increasingly important in Egypt, and eventually he became the supreme deity, identified as Amon Ra (See Ra).
His temple, Karnak, is the largest religious structure ever built by man. Amun was thought of as the creative source of all life in heaven and earth, the seas and the Underworld. This creative power was manifested in the form of Ra, hence Amun-Ra.
Amun is frequently represented as a ram or as a human with a rams head. The Egyptians believed that he took the form of the ruling human King in order to procreate. His name means "hidden"; his image was painted blue, which was the symbol of invisibility. His wife was Mut, with whom he had the son Khonsu, the god of the moon.
