When discussing a dream or something you plan on doing, you most likely did it with someone you love, a friend or someone else you can imagine yourself working with through thick and thin. You spend lots of time with this person and you vow that nothing will ever change your relationship — even business. It may seem counterintuitive but you might have a better chance of succeeding when you work with someone you do not like. If we go to the opposite end of the spectrum, you should work with someone you absolutely cannot stand.
One of the best examples comes from a wildly popular show from The Discovery Channel called Mythbusters. The two main hosts, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage are often seen working together for most shows and they do amazing work. You might think that they are, or have become friends but this could not be further from the truth. The reality is that they drive one another insane. They are not friends but they are colleagues who have respect for one another. “Surprisingly, while Adam and I have a great many differences in our personalities, which is evident from watching the show, we tend to come at things from a very similar mindset.” (Jamie Hyneman)
You may not see yourself hanging out with that person but if you respect one another, you can still have a functional business relationship with benefits that two close friends in business together might not always have. Here are some of them.
· If things venture south and you need to sever ties, things will be much easier for the both of you. There are so many people who want to terminate business relationships but cannot because they are afraid of hurting their family or friend. Also, if a friend or loved on is not performing as they should, imagine the difficulty of having to fire them. A relationship founded on pure business will be much easier to deal with. There will be no residual hurt over a business decision. It may seem like a trifling matter but it does get rid of a lot of unnecessary stress.
· People who are not in your circle of friends are more likely to be blunt than agree with you over something you are mistaken about. You probably partnered with that person because of what you believe they are capable of and it is better to be with while you work instead of having someone you want to spend your lunch hour with.
· People who do not become friends tend to have different interests and likes so when you work with someone like that, you have two sets of perspectives. There will be an eye out on the aspects that you cannot be bothered with, ensuring that there is always a fresh eye to look at things. You could even say that they will be able to notice things you will escape you. You will be able to see things in an unbiased manner in terms of strengths and weaknesses.
· What are the odds of getting sidetracked by social events when you work with someone you do not want to hang out with? That answer is obvious. You will not waste time discussing your plans over the weekend and will be able to focus on your business and what it needs.
The main thing is respect. You must never let the fact that you are not friends get in the way of a business relationship. If you have no respect for one another, you might be yelling at them or disregarding their ideas which nullify the whole point of having a partner. When you want a solid business partner, you might want to look outside your circle of friends and find someone who thinks differently — even if you do not always see eye to eye.
