Stryker Police Chief
Steve Schlosser
Orders Cats be Trapped
and then Shot or Drown!

S.P.A. honors 59-year-old Ada Pierson,
who unlike so many others,
refuses to "look the other way".

Should Stryker Chief of Police, Steve Schlosser, get away with trapping, shooting and drowning the village of Stryker's "nuisance" cats?

"Cats are cats," says Arlen Schmucker, a farmer in Stryker. "They're out on the farm running around, they're wild, hey."
Schmucker says, "Who cares?" He believes the prosecutor has more important issues to deal with.

"I think people are over sensitive to the inhumane issue," says Schmucker.

Maybe those who 'understand' the correlation between animal abuse and human violence should flood Mayor Dan Hugh's office with email and letters so that this small town, farming village of Stryker (population 1,400) might become enlightened regarding the importance of compassion in today's society.

I spoke with Ada personally and she said it is her understanding that an area human society extended an offer to the Mayor's office of creating a fund to spay/neuter these cats for $25. But this idea was completely rejected. My question is, "WHY?"

PLEASE NOTE:
All email, letters and telephone messages should be stated/written in a considerate, polite manner. Spewing angry messages will decrease the chances of a positive outcome.

An important point to make is that because cats are territorial, spayed and neutered cats won't allow other cats into their area after they are spayed/neutered and released. The result is fewer cats in the neighborhood and no new kittens being born. However, if cats are trapped and euthanized, other fertile cats simply move into the neighborhood.

You might add, "I stand for a humane solution that is within our grasp, to achieve a positive, visible, caring result now -- one that will, in the long run, make my community more inviting to citizens who understand the importance of doing what's right, not what's easiest."

It is absolutely unacceptable that Steve Schlosser, Stryker Chief of Police, ordered that these innocent neighborhood cats be trapped and then shot or drown.

Please, don't just look the other way because that's the easiest thing to do. GET INVOLVED. Help make this world a little kinder place. We need a lot more kindness, that's for certain. We need a lot more people who care, people like Ada Pierson.

Ada Pierson's Account:

The following is my account of what happened to the cats in Stryker.

In January of this year, Stryker Police Chief Steve Schlosser contacted me about the stray cats that were in my yard. He said he had received numerous complaints and that this issue had to be addressed.

I was told that the cats would be trapped and treated humanely.

On Thursday of the next week, I learned that the cats were being shot or drown at the Tiffin River. Upon hearing this we contacted the dog warden's office, humane society and the mayor of Stryker.

Because Williams County works so closely they thought it best to have this investigated by and outside agency. This is why Fulton County Sheriff's department became involved.

The sheriffs report states that he (the sheriff) found wrongdoing by the chief of police and four of his officers.

We are now waiting for someone to prosecute these people. After all is said and done, I hope we get justice for these cats and can prevent this from ever happening again. It is really sad to see people loose their pets this way.
What's next? Will they start shooting and drowning homeless, unemployed, and disabled people...like me?
I hope people care about and become involved with this wrong-doing.

Sincerely hoping for a more humane world,
Ada Pierson
