I lived in China for 18 years as a teacher of oral English. Gave up my life in the USA to be there and to enjoy something different. Yes, it was and once situated and found my way around really loved being there. The denizens were no different than here, plently of buses and stores in which we can shop in which were much cheper. getting around was a problem at first but once one learns the system no problem. My neighbors were helpful, always had a smile while a few were just meddlesome but realized not many foreigners live here so they just wanted to know. The children funny, amusing at times while also asking about things in my home land. My students were eager to learn, again inquiring about things or how to say something. Then again the boys just might be a bit lazy. They would get better as the semester pass on. It was fantastic knowing that being here was also a way to show my friendship.
Traveling well amazing but crowded depending on where you are going. The trains are more than effieient then again crowded. Different classes on each one with about 20 cars hauling many to different destinations that were wonderful. Buses were limited but did the same. One could watch a movie or two and if you are the only foreigner the driver will watch out for you and take care of you. At times there is someone on the bus selling cold drinks or some sandwhiches. Nice really and comfortable. your seatmate might speak your language or be grumpy while not uttering a word. I used both and found them satisfying really.
