Rhino poaching is running rampant with no end in sight. In 2012 a total of 668 rhinos were brutally killed and stripped of their horns. As of June 2013, the number is already at 449 and increasing every day! Many less than desirable solutions have been offered by various sources, among these solutions were:
- Cutting off their horns to "remove temptation".
- Legalise the trading of rhino horn.
- Drilling holes in the horns and putting poison in them, in order to stop the horn from growing.
None of these proposed solutions leave the Rhino unscathed and would only further serve to harm their way of life.
Various organisations and action groups have formed in an attempt to curb the problem, mostly relying on donations from 3rd party individuals and companies. So, why does the number of Rhinos poached keep increasing exponentially?
- Lack of sustainable funding
- Expensive (over-priced) high-tech equipment
- Lack of man power and specialist staff
- Unknown or vague/estimated locations of animals
There are several other contributing factors, however, addressing these 4 main factors is the key to developing a real counter-strike to the poaching problem.
Enter Project AAR (Adopt-A-Rhino)! We aim to address the poaching problem with a simple but unique concept: Applied ‘asset’ management by deploying high-tech collars fitted to the rhinos' necks. Each collar will be sponsored by individuals or companies to ensure a sustainable income flow to kick poachers to the curb. Using the funds each adoption generates, we will be able to:
- Train permanently employed game rangers
- Expand a fleet of vehicles
- Aquire necessary equipment
Just knowing where each and every rhino is without human interference, is half the battle won. Add highly trained specialists with patrol-routes, weapons and vehicles to this equation and poaching will quickly become a dangerous and serious risk for would-be offenders.
Our fleet will be on-call 24/7, patrolling and protecting rhinos using live tracking software via a secure website and mobile application developed in-house by us. The best part of course is that involved conservation agencies will not need to pay a single cent, leaving them free to focus on other efforts and projects that require the attention of their already limited budgets.
We came up with a completely unique design for a highly specialised tracking device and is currently in the final stages of prototype development. Here are some of the features:
- Self-sustaining Energy
- Durable & Flexible
- GPS/GSM Driven
- Anti-Theft Technology
- Life State Monitor
- Chafe Resistant
- Adjustable, Safe & Secure Fit
We named our device the "AniTracker". It is catered for large wildlife such as rhinos and elephants but can easily be used for other smaller species, including domesticated animals like cattle, sheep, dogs and even cats! Our design is based on a "One size fits all" concept. Similar tech is less practical and can price anywhere between $1,000 and $3,000 per unit which forms part of the reasons conservation agencies struggle to keep up; The costs are just too high.
Our collar makes use of cutting edge technology while simultaneously being affordable. We estimate that the Anitracker will cost as little as $250 which may even be less after our prototypes are completed. If you are interested in getting an AniTracker for yourself, be sure to check out the perks.
The Anitracker will eventually be available to businesses and individuals once we've finalized the prototypes and they are ready for production release.
What Your Money Will Do
We have the tools, the man-power, the knowledge and the technology along with life-savings of $31,500 already invested. We need your help to drive this home; Together we can affect true change and stop poaching in its tracks.
100% of the funds will be allocated as follows:
