This is a long passage but I would like each of you to read these verses because it is here that Jesus speaks of compassion. in fact there are many more verses that you can find wisdom of compassion in; His words about forgiveness, His words on healing and visiting those have problems, His words about helping others, and showing mercy all speak of compassion.
Jesus also meant these words for us in this day and age also.
He wanted to see our mercy more than He wanted a sacrifice. The verse of Matthew 9:13 is often ignored by many, but it is what really caught my attention. In those days the sacrifice meant taking of an animal life, but in this day and age sacrifice may mean many things. Fortunately animal sacrificing was put to an end; however, how do we interpret this verse in this day and age? I believe that making a symbolic sacrifice to or for the Lord is fine; a sacrifice such as spending time with the Lord in prayer, praying the sacrifice of praise, giving up television time for Bible Study or family prayer, and situations such as these; however, the Lord also wants us to be merciful to others, and He wants this most of all. So this is something for you to pray about. Ask the Lord how you can show mercy to others; how you can show compassion, how an act of kindness can be the greatest sacrifice of all!
