I became a vegetarian the moment I found out you could live without meat.  Back then, the common thought was that you needed meat to survive.  A lot of people still believe this today, but more and more people are becoming aware.  That's what this month is all about...increasing people's awareness of the health benefits of eating a plant based diet and the health risks of consuming meat...all animal products, for that matter.  Not to mention the spiritual benefits which come when you step away from an industry as cruel as using animals in the production of food.

It was the late 1960's and people thought it was merely a fad.  Peace, Love and Vegetarianism!  But no, it's not a fad.  It's a deeply held spiritual belief that all life IS sacred. I have a difficult time understanding how something like the way animals are treated can go on in a civilized world.  Perhaps we're not so civilized as we think we are.

Vegetarianism isn't enough, though.  Veganism is what is needed to end the cruelty.  The dairy industry is as cruel as the meat industry.  I, myself, didn't realize this until having been a vegetarian for 40 years.  I attended a dinner with other vegetarians and vegans, and the woman I sat next to handed a pamphlet to me and told me how much suffering is involved in the production of milk products and eggs.  I am very grateful to her for helping me see.  How did I miss it all of those years?  I was extremely devoted to not eating meat, but I had no idea at all about the rest.  I think about that now when I wonder how people sometimes just don't "get it" about any of this.  To me it is obvious, but to some people maybe it's not.

BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars are put into promoting the meat and dairy industry and making sure it keeps its share of the market, which is just about everyone in this part of the world, although veganism is gaining ground.  At least it's commonly heard of these days, even if it is only on the evening sit-com.  Vegetarians and vegans are typically portrayed as eccentric, flaky, comic individuals not to be taken seriously.   Again, BILLIONS go into this.  Money is spent in Washington, to make sure the right bills are passed to protect the industry's interests, such as the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act.  The idea put forth ix that anyone interested in animal rights is labeled as a fanatic or nutcase or even worse, a dangerous radical of some sort who is a threat to public safety somehow.

The truth is that many sane, rational and well respected people had similar concerns. Here are some quotes from a few:

"My body will not be a tomb for other creatures."  Leonardo Da Vinci

"Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet" Albert Einstein

"One should not kill a living thing, nor cause it to be killed, nor should one incite another to kill.  Do not injure any being, either strong or weak, in the world."  Buddha

"It is more important to prevent animal suffering, rather than sit to contemplate the evils of the universe praying in the company of priests."  Buddha

"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which isthe fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."  Genesis 1:29

"Thou shall not kill."  Exodus 20:13

"The unnatural eating of flesh meats is as polluting as the heathen worship of devils, with its sacrifices and its impure feasts, through participation in it a man becomes a fellow eater with devils."  The Apostle Peter

"There is no fundamental difference between man and animals in their ab ility to feel pleasure and pain, happiness and misery."  Charles Darwin

"Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution.  Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages."  Thomas Edison

"I hold that the more helpless a creture, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man."  Mohandas Gandhi

"Recognize meat for what it really is:  the antibiotic- and pesticide-laden corpse of a tortured animal."  Ingrid Newkirk

"Can you really ask what reason Pythagoras had for abstaining from flesh? ... It is certainly not lions and wolves that we eat out of self-defense; on the contrary, we ignore these and slauighter harmless, tame creature without stings or teeth to harm us, creatures that, I swear, Nature appears to have produced for the sake of their beauty and grace.  But nothing abashed us, not the flower-like tinting of the flesh, not the persuasiveness of the harmonious voice, not the cleanliness of their habits or the unusual intelligence that may be found in the poor wretches.  No, for the sake of a little flesh we deprive them of sun, of light, of the duration of life to which they are entitled by nbirth and being."  Plutarch

"For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other.  Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love."  Pythagoras

"I will not kill or hurt any iving creature needlessly, nor destroy any beautiful thing, but will strive to save and comfort all gentle life, and guard and perfect all natural beauty upon the earth."  John Ruskin

"Not to hurt our huble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough.  We have a higher mission - to be of service to them whenever they require it...If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men."  St. Francis of Assisi

"Ethics, too, are nothing but reverence for life.  That is what gives me the fundamental principle of morality, namely, that good consists in maintaining, promoting and enhancing life, and that destroying, injuring and limiting life are evil."  Albert Schweitzer

"The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them:  that's the essence of inhumanity."  George Barnard Shaw

"Animals are my friends...and I don't eat my friends."  George Bernard Shaw

"As long as people will shed the blood of innocent creatures there can be no peace, no liberty, no harmony between people.  Slaughter and justice cannot dwell together."  Isaac Bashevis Singer

"People often say that humans have always eaten animals, as if this is a justification for continuing the practice.  According to this logic, we should not try to prevent people from murdering other people, since this has also been done since the earliest of times."  Iassac Bashevis Singer

"We consume the carcasses of creatures of like appetites, passions and organs with our own, and fill the slaughterhouses daily with screams of pain and fear."  Robert Louis Stevenson

"A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in tgaking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite.  And to act so is immoral."  Leo Tolstoy

"One farmer says to me, 'You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make the bones with;' and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying himself with the raw material of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, w hich, with vegetable=made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle."  Henry David Thoreau

“If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.”   Paul McCartney

It's not hard to see that we're causing pain.  If we are to advance spiritually, how can we continue to participate in this when we know there is no justifiable reason?  Also, if we are to heal physically, shouldn't we be spiritually fit?  If our only concern is our own well-being and not that of another creature, then we should look at the fact of the matter....eating a plant-based diet is best for us, too.

Financially it's a better choice, too...for you AND the world!

If you think it's too hard, start by praying over your food.  Give thanks for the animals life.  Pray for understanding and willingness to do your part.  Perhaps start with one vegan meal every week, or one a day.  Everyone can help themselves and the problem by moving just a little bit in the right direction and then move a little bit more.  Read more.  Educate yourself o the issue.  Pray.  Watch videos.  Become willing to see the Truth.  The idea is not to heap guilt upon you.  The idea is to help you become more enlightened and to live a more healthy and peaceful life.  The idea is also to help those who suffer.  What you probably don't know is that if you're eating animal products, the animals are not the only ones suffering, but most likely you are, as well.  Eating of death always has side effects.  I am not saying this to be judgmental, but only to help people become more aware.  Somehow we've become blind to what's going on.  We, as a society, I mean.  No one wants to speak up.  I don't want to be ostracized, either, for voicing an unpopular opinion, but I think there are some things more important than whether you like me or not.  This is one of those things.

We only think we are meant to be omnivores, but that is not really the Truth.

Here is a website with good information on many aspects of veganism:

As a final prayer, may I say, "Thank you all loving spiritual father and mother earth for providing for all our nutritional needs through your wonderous display of nutrient rich plants born from seed.  May we open our eyes to see the bounty and give thanks for thy grace, thy love and thy mercy upon all the face of the earth.  May we be nourished in a loving manner, extending our love back out to the world and offering our strength to the service of all that is good and right.  May we reach out to our fellow creatures in a spirit of oneness with all.  Grant us peaceful and compassionate hearts.  Thank you for the abundance that is your will for all.  And so it is.  Amen."

Happy Vegetarian Month...may it last your whole life through!
