-The Ayer Road Ghost-
The event I am going to tell you about happened on May 20th, 1987. I remember that date so clearly because it has real meaning to the story. My name is Jim Whitcomb, a faithful Care2 member. I used to live in a big, old farm house on Ayer Road, in Williamsville, New York. It was the original “Ayer Farm House”, for which the road was named. Back in the 1800's the farm had several thousand acres, but when we lived there, it was cut down to about 4 acres, with houses built on the additional land. Still, it seemed like lots of “open land” to me, and you really couldn't see any of the neighbor's houses because of all the trees. It was a wonderful old house, and a great place to live. I loved it there.
In the kitchen there was a brick wall that originally had been an outside wall. But a new kitchen had been since added on, and the old outside wall was now inside, in the kitchen. One of the little girls who had lived in the house long ago, had scratched her name into one of the bricks on that wall, and also scratched the date that she did it. That date was May 20th, 1887. The little girl's name was Jenny Ayer.
As the day approached for it to be the “100 Year Anniversary” of that date, my sister (who owned the house) decided that she didn't want to spend the night in the house since it seemed a bit “scary” to her. Her husband was out of town on a business trip, so she decided to take her 2 small children and go over to our mother's house for the night. I was not frightened by this date, so I decided to stay for the night see what happened. I lived in the small "guest house" that was out behind the main house, and it was a very nice, comfortable place to live. I loved the peace and tranquility of being out there.
After my sister took her kids and left for the night, I went over to the main house to try and “talk to the spirits." At about 11 PM, I went over, lit some candles, and sat alone in the kitchen. I sat right next to the brick with Jenny Ayer's name carved in it, and I stroked the brick while I asked little Jenny Ayer to come and talk to me. I asked her “to show me some sign that she was there.” Some sign, ANY sign. I did this for about 1 1/2 hours. Some rather strange sounds and breezes seemed to go past me, but not enough to be certain that anything really unusual had happened. Finally I decided to stop, and go back to the guest house in the back where I was living. I thought that the night’s “adventures” were over, and nothing really had happened. I was very wrong.
I brought my cat, Kelly, in for the night, and went to sleep. Everything was peaceful until about 4 AM. Then, from a deep sleep, I was awakened by a very loud and terrible noise up in the attic! You would have to see the attic to know how strange this really was, but there was a very large "thing" up there, and it was dragging across the floor of the attic! I jumped out of bed, and grabbed my cat. I clutched her to my chest as we both watched the ceiling just over our heads! What ever it was that was up there, it sounded so large that it might crash through the ceiling and into the room where we were. It moved and "dragged" slowly across the attic floor, and then disappeared right through a solid wall. It came in through a place where there was no way in, and it left through a place where there was no way out. Keep in mind that this "being" sounded like it was the size of a bear! But it was not walking across the floor, it sounded like it was "dragging" itself across the attic floor.
There was a tiny window in that attic, that didn't open, on the wall where this "entity" exited through the wall. On the outside ledge of that small octagonal window was a nest of baby birds. It was May, and prime “baby bird time.” As this thing approached them, the tiny birds started chirping very loudly, and then went totally crazy. After it left, the tiny birds eventually quieted back down, and went back to sleep. And all the time this unknown "being" was dragging itself across the attic floor, my cat's eyes stared silently at the ceiling along with mine. She saw and heard the whole event. My cat and the baby birds were the only other "witnesses" to what happened that night.
After this "entity" left, I was so frightened that there was no way I was going to try and go back to sleep! So I turned on the TV, the radio, turned on all the lights, and waited for the sun to come up. After the sun was high above the horizon, I finally got a few hours of sleep.
It took about a week to finally get up the courage to go into the attic to look around. The place where this thing had dragged itself along the attic floor was totally untouched. That area of the attic was covered with big boxes full of old things, and none of the boxes were disturbed at all. That was impossible. Things should have scattered everywhere. But they weren’t. Nothing could have dragged through that area without disturbing many boxes! But it appeared that nothing had ever been up there at all. And it must be noted that there was no way in, and no way out of that attic. So whatever it was, it was not of this physical world. That much is for certain. Whatever it was, it had no physical body to disturb things.
I will never know what "it" really was. I'm sure it was not the spirit of the little girl, Jenny Ayer, however. I invited spirits to come and visit me that night, and something came to see me. And I really don't think it was a good spirit. I will never forget that night for as long as I live. All of this is the complete truth, and not even exaggerated for a more dramatic effect. There is no need to do that. It was terrifying enough exactly as it happened. I guess the moral of the story would be this: If you ask spirits to come and “visit” you, they probably will. So DON’T ask for such things, unless you are willing to deal with the consequences. That is a 100% true story. So have a Happy Halloween, but just stick to the silly costumes and candy!!! At least that would be my advise. Take it from someone who now knows better. I will never do anything like that again. “Live and Learn”, right?
Take care everyone! Jim.
