After a move to Chelsea it began to look bright. Under the Rafa Benitez’s short reign in charge, Moses was a genuine mainstay in the squad. Benitez seemed to enjoy the mixture between Oscar, Mata and Hazard with the power and pace that Moses was able bring. Following the inevitable sacking of the former Liverpool manager and it seemed to be dark days for Moses.
During the summer he was out of the picture. The return of The Special One in Jose Mourinho, and new signings within his position made it seem a pretty bleak prospect of staying at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers saw this as an opportunity and decided to bring in Moses on a loan deal, a move that could kick-start his career again.
Since his arrival at Anfield, the Nigerian international has provided a string of bad performances and has been faced with criticism from fans and legends of the club regarding his displays. He hasn’t been able to excite many of the clubs fans this season. It has caused a sigh of discontent whenever the imminent substitution of the loanee is echoed around the Merseyside tannoy.
Simply put, Moses hasn’t been good enough. He has provided the Reds with below par displays, all of which have been eclipsed by youngsters Raheem Sterling and Phillipe Coutinho. Two players over three years his junior, with well under half the Premier League experience of him, have outshone, outperformed and excited fans in a single match than Nigerian Moses has done in a any games this season. This simply is not good enough.
Liverpool now has the choice whether to keep the winger until the end of the season, or terminate his contract early. A situation Liverpool fans will remember last year with Nuri Sahin. On that occasion Rodgers made the tough decision to send the unhappy Sahin back to his parent club Real Madrid, where he could make a switch back to his former club Borussia Dortmund permanent again. Will it be the same this time around?
If this is to be the case, you have to feel that Liverpool would need to bring in reinforcements to help aid their pursuit for a top four finish. As good as the influential Coutinho and Sterling have been, relaying on youngsters to stay fit, in form and consistent for the remainder of the season is a big ask.
Many have heard the name of Egyptian winger Mohammed Salah brandished around as an imminent incoming for the Reds. The FC Basel winger has impressed many with his trickery and ability to put the ball in the back of the net. This is something Moses has failed to show all season.
As of late it has been noted in the press that the price for Salah may have increased, and this has left Rodgers questioning to spend the money required to get his man. Also, an increase in popularity over the player has left many Liverpool fans questioning whether it is just going to be a similar case to Henrik Mkhitaryan and Willian from the summer.
Either this, or Moses stays with the Anfield club. He works hard on the training ground and looks to improve on his performances. Currently if Moses continues the way he is, he will return to Chelsea either now or at the end of the season and will be likely sold off. It’s at a stage where Chelsea’s squad is so deep that if he doesn’t improve upon his return he will leave. He just simply isn’t good enough at the minute to warrant a place in that squad.
So Moses has a job to do, a point to prove and is in need of an attitude adjustment. The lacksidasical approach that is only being shown currently needs to change if the fortunes of this player are to turn around.
The winger is by no means old, at 23 Moses still has a long career ahead of him. The only question remains, will he still be at a top club at the end of the summer.
